Festive Poetry!

What a lovely end to a busy term of English in Year 6! Children worked hard to create joyful and uplifting festive poetry incorporating figurative language and a rhyming pattern throughout their stanzas. They used their senses to describe seasonal scents, noises, textures and sights as they transported their audience into a winter wonderland. Mrs Marson enjoyed judging the poetry and chose an overall winner who was Tuloula H. Fantastic work!

Year 5 D&T – Make

Today, Year 5 used their designs and what they had learned in the focused practical task to make their own pair of sandals. They had to cut out their straps and attach them to the soles of their sandals. They then added embellishments, such as sequins, beads and buttons, to decorate their sandals.

Maya trading post!

Year 6 have really enjoyed learning about the Maya over this past term so we decided to finish off our topic focus by running a ‘Maya Trading Post’! The children showed excellent teamwork and enterprise skills by working together to buy and trade Maya themed activities for cocoa bean currency (or coffee beans in our case!). The winning team was the group who successfully earnt the most cocoa bean profit. All children showed that they had retained so much knowledge about the Maya from over the past term and worked fantastically in teams to build on individual strengths. Well done!

YEAR 6 RE

Year 6 have been learning about Hanukkah ; a Jewish celebration of light.

           A brief history

The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, began on the 28th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, traditional food games and gifts.

We expect our Year 6 children to be more independent and creative when it comes to their writing. For this task the children used several sources of media,  from which they produced a piece of writing to describe the importance of Hanukkah.

Well done Year 6 !

Year 5 Theatre Trip

This afternoon, Year 5 travelled to Hull Truck Theatre to see The Railway Children. We had a brilliant time and thoroughly enjoyed the performance!

YEAR 5 RE

Year 5 have been looking at the key concepts of the Islamic faith.

What do the 5 pillars of Islam mean?

There are five key practices that all Muslims are obligated to fulfil throughout their lifetime.

These practices are referred to as pillars because they form the foundation of Muslim life.

As Theologists the children have discovered that The five pillars of Islam are :

Shahada – words of commitment

Salah  – prayer

Zakat- charitable deeds

Sawm –  fasting

Hajj  – pilgrimage

Our children need to aware about their own beliefs and values so they can respect and learn about the cultural differences of others.

Year 5 Recorders

For the past few weeks, Year 5 have been learning to play the recorder. We have learned to play notes, such as B, A, G and E, and learned to play different songs using all the notes we have learned. We have really enjoyed learning this instrument!

Exploring in the Snow December 2021

F1 were very excited to arrive at school today, with the snow falling. Once we had done our morning jobs, we decided to venture outside to explore the snow. Before we set off we asked the children what they thought we should wear. We decided we needed hats, gloves, coats and wellington boots. We spoke about the material of wellington boots and why they were better than our school shoes. One of the children laughed how a few weeks ago they were in shorts and t-shirts at school and how cold they would be if they were wearing that today. We discussed seasons and how it was still autumn although the weather was looking more like winter today. When we set off on our walk on the school grounds, there had  just been a heavy falling of snow. We loved the noise our wellies made crunching in the snow. We went to the corner of the field to the natural area. Two of the boys where very concerned where the bugs had gone, which we had seen under the logs a few weeks before. We discussed them finding somewhere warm underground. We made snow balls and decided the snow was ice and it was really cold. Some of us even made snow angles. Most of all we enjoyed having fun with our friends. We saw Mr Wileman, our site manager, busy putting salt on the ground to melt the ice so that people didn’t fall. Some of the children had remembered the ice melting when we put salt on it on our Tuff Spot a few weeks ago. The children enjoyed exploring in the snow but were pleased to get back to the classroom and get warm.
