When Christopher Pickering first opened in 2012, the name had been chosen by the previous school communities of Bethune Park Primary School and Tilbury Primary School. Christopher Pickering was an influential figure in Hull due to his generosity and kindness; he built several alms-houses (charitable housing), a church, a children’s home and Pickering Park. Following on from this we decided that name our houses based on influential figures from Hull.
- BLUE – William Wilberforce was a British politician, philanthropist, and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade. A native of Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, he began his political career in 1780, eventually becoming an independent Member of Parliament for Yorkshire.
- RED – Ebenezer Cobb Morley was an English sportsman from Hull. He is regarded as one of the fathers of the Football Association and modern football.
- GREEN – Amy Johnson, from Kingston-upon Hull, was a pioneering English pilot who was the first woman to fly solo from London to Australia. Flying solo or with her husband, Jim Mollison, she set many long-distance records during the 1930s.
- YELLOW – Clive A. Sullivan was a Welsh rugby league player. He played for both Hull F.C. and Hull Kingston Rovers in his career, and also for Oldham and Doncaster. Captaining Great Britain in 1972, he was the first black captain for Great Britain in any sport.
Role and Expectations of House Captains
The role of House Captains are ones of privilege, pride and responsibility. They are more than just a title and badge and require dedication and commitment for an entire year. The children take part in active citizenship, whereby they lead a series of charitable events throughout the school. This may include major national events e.g. Children in Need to more local events e.g. food collection for the local foodbank. At the beginning of each year the House Captains put their proposals forward to the head teacher who sanctions the activities and fundraising events.
House Captains are elected by the children in their House after giving a speech about what they can offer their House. All children vote for their House Captains. There is a boy and girl House Captain in each house.
Each Captain will be different and will contribute an assortment of skills and ideas to the job.
We expect you:
- To be a positive role model and ambassador for the school, demonstrating Christopher Pickering Primary Values.
- To be enthusiastic and committed to the House System at Christopher Pickering Primary School
- To be friendly and positive with all students, particularly within your House.
- To be part of the team of House Captains who work together to achieve success for all.
