WHITE RIBBON DAY YEAR 6

As part of our White Ribbon Day Activity Year 6 Have created a graffiti wall of positivity. Each child wrote a thought on the wall, which challenge misconceptions. The children’s thoughts are clear; each one sending a positive message to all who read them.

If we immerse ourselves in diverse culture, we get opportunities to interact and mingle with people from different background and learn from one another. We can build trust, love, respect and understanding across cultures thereby wiping out all the negative stereotypes and personal biases about different groups.

Well done Year 6 , a great way to get the message across!!!

Human and physical geographical features

As geographers, Year 6 worked in groups to research, create and deliver their own presentations which focused on one of the human/physical geographical features within Central America. It was fascinating to spend time researching a parts of the world which are so different to what we experience living in the UK. The children did a great job in sharing their findings and teaching their classmates about their area of focus!

As Theologists, Y4 have been gaining a further insight into the weekend rituals and traditions of members of the Jewish faith community and comparing them with their own.

The children firstly identified the traditional activities and rituals which commonly occur in one of their own typical weekend breaks. From lazy lie-ins, watching television, shopping, accessing the internet to undertake various activities, movie nights, visiting family, enjoying an occasional take-away to football, gymnastic and martial arts practice…the children certainly keep themselves busy and entertained.

We then compared our typical weekend activities with  those of a Jewish family. We explored the traditional weekly family celebration of Shabbat which takes place every weekend and begins on a Friday evening at sunset and lasts until sunset on a Saturday evening (25 hours).

The children firstly found the inability to use anything electronic unimaginable but understood that the rituals and traditions of Shabbat in the Jewish faith community, which are recorded in the  Jewish Torah as an agreement with God, allowed for some quality rest and family time to be spent together on the Jewish Sabbath day (Saturday)…something we all agreed was well worth forgoing the use of our electronic devices and the internet for!

White Ribbon Day 2021

In Y4, the children have been working collaboratively to identify the qualities which they believe are necessary to form and maintain positive relationships.

As you can see, we shared our opinions and agreed that many qualities are required to ensure that relationships between friends, parents, carers, teachers and people in our wider community not only work but remain positive.

We then proudly signed our pledge to ensure that only kind words, kind thoughts and kind actions are used towards one another in all the relationships we are a part of now and in the future.

Remembrance Day

As Theologists, the children in Year 3 have been learning about the significance of Remembrance Day and the importance of remembering this special event. We visited the Cenotaph at the All Saints Church in Hessle, where we laid a poppy wreath and held a 2 minute silence to pay our respects for the sacrifices made by individuals during the wars of the past, as well as for those who endeavour to maintain peace in our world today.

Back at school, the children worked collaboratively to identify why we should remember Remembrance Day by sharing their views and opinions before creating their own group mind- maps…

We then shared our own reasons as to why we should never forget the important events of the past which Remembrance Day commemorates…

We also discovered that whilst we wear a red poppy as a symbol of respect for all individuals who have sacrificed their lives to fight and assist in the wars of the past, as well as for those who continue to maintain peace today,  that there is also a  purple poppy which is a symbol of respect for the animals which have played a significant part in major conflicts around the world and a white poppy to symbolise peace.

Appraising Christmas Carols

As musicians, the children in Year 4 have been busy appraising different Christmas Carols and identifying several themes within each musical piece such as…

  • the theme/story the musical piece portrays
  • the mood/emotions the piece emits
  • any accompanying instruments being played
  • the rhythm and tempo of the musical piece

Here are just a few carols we have appraised so far…

Eco Committee

After putting together their action plan, the Eco Committee realised that some of the planned  projects were long term so some members wanted to get started with smaller tasks such as feeding the birds . The pupils filled large pine cones with fat, nuts and seeds which they hung around the school grounds to help feed the birds during the cold winter months and attract a variety of  feathered friends for us to observe.

Year 2 are comparing Hull and Florida in Geography!

Our Year 2 Geographers have been working very hard today. We started by discussing the features of Hull and Florida. We looked at photos and watched videos.

Next, we sorted some photos. We had to decide where we thought the photo and been taken. This generated lots of discussions and our team work was fantastic.

Finally, we described the weather and one physical feature from each place.

Well done Year 2!

Y4 Traditional Games Club

We have started a ‘Traditional Games Club’ here in Year 4, where the children can collaborate and communicate with each other whilst having lots of fun fun getting to grips with some classic games.  As you can see, we are all engaged in the games we are playing and  enjoying each others company whilst demonstrating our teamworking skills!
