Boys Qualify for Rugby Grand Final

After having the football rained off last week, our sporting season finally got underway this year starting with the Hull Active Schools Boy’s Tag Rugby League qualifying event at Sirius Academy West.

Eleven schools were in attendance and we were placed in a group with Stepney, Escourt and Francis Askew. We had a good start with a win 2-1 win over Francis Askew which was followed by a loss to Stepney, who scored in the final seconds. Our third group game was much better with the boys coming through comfortably. Going through as the group winners, we played Wold in the semi final. Some excellent work from hooker Jake F saw the ball being passed out wide on a number of occasions, giving the evasive Last twins move to score some excellent tries and send the boys through to the final.

The final game was against a very strong Eastfield. This was an excellent final game played in good spirit as the vast majority of boys from both teams knew and played with each other on their respective West Hull teams outside of school. Eastfield were he deserved winners, finding gaps in our defence through excellent ball handling skills.

Both teams now go through to the Hull Active Schools Grand Final in a few weeks. Well done boys!

Y5 Reading Stars

This morning we had a visit from Callum Burton (goal keeper for Hull City). Callum had come in to present certificates to children who have successfully completed the Premier League’s ‘Reading Stars’ program, which Tigers Trust have been delivering for the past eight weeks.

The children have been working incredibly hard on their reading and have made some excellent progress and developed their love for reading! Well done!

Certificates all round for their hard work!

The school was also presented with a poetry pack to widen children’s reading choices.

A busy second week back in Y5/6!

Wow what a busy week we have had! Our children have been working hard, enjoying themselves and showing an excellent attitude to learning – well done!

Some of our children attended a Tigers Trust sporting event and were lucky enough to meet some Hull City players and have their photo taken with the Premier League Trophy!

Our Y56 football team have qualified for the EFL Cup final after five wins and a draw at their qualifying event. Well done boys!

There has been a lot of dancing this week – first with our new dance instructor at breakfast club and then with a Flex Dance taster day.

In English, Y5 have been hot seating as Harry Potter!

Sewing club has started again: this term children are making bookmarks.

Who was Big Lil? Fishing WOW day!

Today our spring term kicked off with a WOW dress-up day. To kick start our topic, based around the question Who was ‘Big Lil’?, children came dressed up as trawlermen and fish wives.

Throughout the day they undertook a range of different craft activities: instead of gutting fish, Y5 were cutting fish, Mr Sutton’s class used their sewing skills to make hessian cod and Mr. Morgan’s class learnt about the story of ‘Dead Bod’ and created their own versions of this icon landmark.

This is a fantastic topic and our children and staff can’t wait to get started!

‘A Dead Bod’ – well done children!

A busy sporting term finishes with Badminton finals!

This afternoon saw CP attend our last sporting event of 2018: the Hull Badminton Team Timed Championships.

A couple of weeks ago our boys finished second in their qualifying event, meaning they progressed to the Hull finals. With the qualifying event being the only time four of our five boys had ever played badminton, we knew it was going to be a challenge. However, our boys saw this as an opportunity to learn and develop their skills and were happy to finish 5th in the City: an achievement you should be proud of boy! Well done!

Badminton finals (L-R): Lucas F, William G, Charlie B, Vinnie H & Kayden M.

Tonight our boys played Brough in the second round of the Humberside 9 a side cup. Having beaten Kirkella B in the first round 5-0, we knew it was going to be a challenging game. A further challenge was that our boys hadn’t yet played a game as a 9 a side team due to a bye in the first round of the cup.

The game started well and some quick passing and through the middle of the field saw our boys finish the first half 4-0 up with all goals being scored by captain Alfie M. The second half saw more goals from winger Lucas F, a classy goal from striker Brooklyn B and this worldie of a goal from captain Alfie. Our final goal was scored by debutant Jason LL who had a fantastic game and really stood out for his energy, enthusiasm and skill. Well done also to Leighton E who made his footballing debut and had an excellent game.

Towards the end of the second half, a tiring Brought side did score a late conciliation goal but struggled to keep pace with out boys on the edges. Tonight was a brilliant display of football from both sides with excellent sportsmanship throughout. Well done boys and good luck in the next round.

Tonight’s team (Back L-R): Kyle L, Brooklyn B, Vinnie H, Kalo B, Alfie M (c), Lucas F.

(Front: L-R) Leighton E, Charlie B, Oliver M, Jason LL.

An excellent game from both teams! Thanks Brough!

Tonight our football success continued when our Y5 boys matched the girl’s performance, qualifying for the HAS 5 a side finals.

On a cold night, our newly formed Y5 team had a great start against Gillshill and in an 8 minute game had them beat 6 goals to 2. Our next game was again Neasden, and after having just watched them beat Thanet 7-0, we knew this was going to be a tough game.

The match started awfully with a goal being conceded within the opening few seconds. After a few minutes the boys equalised. This gave the our team a huge boost and they began playing some quality football. After a few minutes, the score was 3-1 and our boys were on top and were not given Neasden any time on the ball thanks to strong work across the pitch from Kayden. A good strike from Neasden saw them bring the score back to 3-2, but a late penalty, taken by captain Oliver M, saw the game put to bed – our boys had won!

Full of confidence, our boys stormed into their final game against Thanet. With some excellent play up front from Reggie P, Oliver M and Archie G, our lads came away with a 7-0 victory.

This is a very promising team with lots of talent. Well done boys! Good luck in the finals next year.

Y5 Superstars (L-R): Kayden A, Leighton E, Kalo B, Reggie P, Oliver M (c) and Archie G.

Girls Qualify for 5 a side finals!

Our girl’s football team continued to build on their success tonight when they qualified for the Hull Active Schools 5 a side finals.

Tonight was the qualifying event for the finals next year meaning they needed to finish top of their group. The start of the competition didn’t go so well. The girls were winning 1-0 with 60 seconds on the clock but managed to concede 2 goals! However, they bounced back from this self-inflicted defeat to beat Bricknell and incredible 8-2. Their final game was against Francis Askew. This was an brilliant game of football played in ever-worsening conditions. The score was close throughout but our girls managed to edge out a 4-2 victory.

This put CPPS and Francis Askew on equal points, but the 8 goals scored in the previous game saved the girls and they finished top of their group on goal difference!

A huge well done to these girls who are improving game on game. Special mentions to keeper Melody T who was exceptional and captain Emily L who kept the team motivated, was solid at the back and scored this amazing goal.

Good luck in the finals!

Humberside 7 a side Finals

Tonight our boys represented Hull along with Gillshill, Spring Cottage and Biggin in the Humberside seven a side county finals. This competition saw the four best teams from every county go head to head in an attempt to reach the national finals in a few months.

It was a tough night out for our boys. The first game finished with a 1-0 loss at the whistle, but a change of referee decision saw a stunning free kick goal from Alfie A allowed so the game finished 1-1. The boys lost their second game 2-0 which meant, barring a huge goal difference in the final games to be played, they couldn’t progress from the group stages.

The night ended on a positive with a 2-1 win and the boys should remember that they in the top four teams in Hull! Well done!

(L-R): Lucas F, Kyle L, Oliver M, Kalo B, Brooklyn B, Vinnie H, Alfie M (c), Charlie B.

Hull FC Foundation Training Session

This evening our after school rugby club were invited to go and train with some Hull FC players and coaches at their Youth Performance Centre on Pickering Road. These children have worked hard in all weathers to play a game they love, alongside Brad from Hull FC. This was Brad’s final session of the term and it was a fantastic treat.

We started with a quick brief in the centre’s common room before moving into the sports hall to take part in a number of games and activities. One activity was on the tackle bags with Sika Manu (first team player, Challenge Cup winner, World Cup winner & Tongan Captain) and Josh Bowden (first team player and double Challenge Cup winner). The children loved this activity and enjoyed running hard against some talented professional players.

This was followed by a quick question and answer session with the players. Finally, our children were all given an FC water bottle and other merchandise which the players signed.

This was a very special event and created some fantastic memories for our children. Huge thanks to Brad, Richard, Sam and all other other guys from the FC Foundation for inviting us along!
