Today, Y56 once again held their annual intra-house cross country competition. The weather was horrible with lashing wind and rain. Nevertheless, everyone who took part completed the course in excellent time.
The top 24 finishers will go on to represent the school in the Hull Active Schools competition next week with our top 6 runners entering the ‘A Race’ and next 18 running the ‘B Race’
Well done children and good luck next week to those qualifying children!

This afternoon, Christopher Pickering hosted the first of this year’s HET Sports events: Tag Rugby League. Teams from Adelaide, Maybury and Woodland came along from some fun games of rugby league. Christopher Pickering were the winners but the main focus of the competition was the Sainsbury’s School Games value of ‘Honesty’. After every game, teams rated each other on how honest they were in playing to the rules and being good sports people. The winners of the Honesty award were the children of Maybury Primary School who consistently displayed excellent sportsmanship, obeying and respecting the rules of the game.
Thank you all for coming down and we look forward to seeing you at the next event!

Ola! Bonjour! Guten Tag! Ciao! Yasuo!
On Thursday Y56 celebrated European Day of Languages 2019 with a tour of different European countries to learn different languages.
Children got to grip with Spanish, French, German, Italian and Greek! They completed lots of small activities and worked hard to master new words and pronounce them clearly – well done children!
Layla created a super German cartoon strip using basic conversation language
Y5JON have a super time learning Spanish!
The Greek language went down well but not everyone was keen on the olives!
Welcome back children! This week we kicked off the new year with a WOW morning to get us started on our new topic “What makes us tick?”
Children took part in different activities which all related to our heart and the circulatory system. They used materials to simulate how the kidneys filter blood, attempted to protect a teacake ‘heart’ by building a ribcage from different material, made their own blood and examined the different parts and took part in the dissection of a pigs heart!
Well done children – this is going to be an exciting topic!

As well as pumping blood to the rest of our bodies, the heart also needs bloody itself. Reuben is injecting water into the coronary artery to demonstrate how this happens.
Getting stuck in! Reuben has his fingers in the superior vena cava and pulmonary artery, making his fingers meet in the right ventricle!

This week Y6 have completed their IMPS training programme, learning how to stay safe, prevent injuries through considering the risk and learning life-saving first aid.
Across two days, both classes took part in two sessions. They covered a range of topics from minimising and assessing risks, what to do in an emergency, how small cuts and fractures are treated, how to perform CPR and put an causality in the recovery position.
Our children were fantastic – asking lots of questions, listening brilliantly and approaching the programme with maturity. Well done!

This week Y5/6 have been making visits into the City centre to visit significant sites linked with out topic: Hull’s fishing heritage. The aim of the trip was to pay tribute to the lives lost during the Triple Trawler Tragedy, and important event in the history of Hull and the school’s local community.
We started with the Big Lil mural on Midland Street – we’ll be learning about Big Lil’s impact soon!

Next, we visited the trawler memorial in Zebedee’s yard. The children laid a wreath in memory of the lives lost aboard the St Romans, Kingston Peridot and Ross Cleveland and observed a minutes silence.
Next we went to have a look at Hull’s last fishing trawler, the Arctic Corsair. It was amazing to see a real trawler up close!
Our next stop was Humber Street Gallery to see the real Dead Bod! We’ve been learning about this local legend and children have written short stories about it!
Our final stop was the ‘Knife Angel’, a towering sculpture made up of over 100,000 knives as part of the #NoMoreKnives campaign.
