Victorian fabulous finish day

Year 1 had a fantastic fabulous finish day being immersed into the world of the Victorian era and what it was like for children in the past.

As soon as the children arrived into the class they were greeted with a new Victorian name (unless they already had one) and a very strict teacher.

The children were shocked to learn that children used to have punishments that were not very nice:

If a child answered a question wrong they used to wear a Dunce cap to embarrass them in front of the class!

Lottie pretending to be in trouble and receiving the cane from her teacher.

The children also practised writing without a pencil and paper. Victorian children would use slate to write with.

We all agreed that we much prefer how schools are today! The children were so excited to go tell their grown ups what they had learnt.

Year 1 loved being Historians by putting themselves into the shoes of Beatrix Potter to find out what life was like her for during the Victorian Era. We know to be successful Historians we need to look at different sources of evidence. We discovered that she was taught by her very own governess at home by looking closely at a painting. Using this piece of evidence the children asked lots of questions and came up with their own conclusions:

Millie- But when did she play with her friends?

Olivia- That would be so boring!

Teddy- Would they be as strict as Victorian schools?

We then had fun acting out a day in the life of Beatrix Potter. Here are some of the things we learnt:

She was woken up by her maid/governess using candles if it was dark.

She would then be served breakfast prepared by servants which was a huge meal consisting of ham, bacon, eggs and fish!

Cup and ball.

Beatrix Potter had toys such as a skipping rope.

We then compared this life to ours in the 21st century.

Year 1 fieldwork

Year 1 are becoming confident geographers. At the start of the lesson we re-capped the 7 continents and understand that we live in Europe. We then used Digimaps to explore the United Kingdom, England and finally looked at Hull the city where we live. After, we looked at a variety of maps and photographs to identify our school. We were really interested to see how things look as a ‘birds eye view’ on aerial mode compared to ground level.

Next we set off on a walk around the school site to identify different features within school.

When we got back to class we started to put our features onto a key which will later be placed on our sketch map next lesson.

spanish club

This week in Spanish club we had so much fun! We learnt how to greet each other and practiced with our partners. We learnt hola (hello), buenos dias (good morning), como estas (how are you?), estoy bien (good), estoy mal (bad) and estoy mas o menos (so-so).

For the second half of our club we focussed on Spanish culture. This week we studied the artist Pablo Picasso. We learnt a fun fact that his first word was ‘piz’ short for ‘lapiz’ which is Spanish for pencil! We admired his weird but wonderful artwork and decided we wanted to have a try at becoming Picasso.

This week in geography we looked at a variety of different maps. We looked at a map of the United Kingdom and re-capped the four countries and their capital cities. We also looked at street maps, transport maps and a holiday park map. We discussed how maps had keys to help people identify where different things can be located.

We then looked at a map of Beatrix Potter’s world in the Lake District. On this map are a variety of different characters from the stories. We gave our partners oral instructions to find the different characters using locational and positional language.

Maisie using positional language.

Stanley using positional language.

To extend out learning we identified the different human and physical features found on the map.

We are excited to create our own map of our school next week.

Singing in a round!

In Year 1 we have been appraising nursery rhymes with a focus on where they originated from. Last week we looked at the song ‘Hot Cross Buns’. We discovered the song was more than 300 years old and was used by bakers to help sell their delicious buns. We performed our song in a round. At first we found this extremely tricky as we would sing each other’s parts. As a result, for this week Miss Dale sang one part and the children sang the other. Here was the final outcome.

This week we were determined to keep practicing singing in a round. We appraised another traditional nursery rhyme ‘Row, row, row your boat’. We then looked at more additions to the song that have been invented over the years. We agreed our favourite was the crocodile one so we decided to perform this in a round and WE DID IT! So proud Year 1, well done!

hey you!

Year 1 have loved listening to, appraising, and performing the song ‘Hey you!’ by Joanna Mangona. We have been especially good at finding the pulse of this song, remembering it is like a heartbeat. Here is our final performance using BSL for our actions.

los animales

KS1 have been loving our Spanish assemblies. We have been looking at how to pronounce the names of different animals. We noticed that some animal names are similar to the English language but some are very different. For example Un Elaphante looks and sounds similar to our name and pronunciation for Elephant. However, Una Oveja is the name for a sheep which is very different. At the end of our sessions, we love the quiz where we listen to the name of a Spanish animal and tell our partners what animal we think we heard. We can’t wait to develop our language skills.

Making our own stories using levers and sliders!

Our first step of making our story was to first investigate what a slider and a lever is. We used our classroom environment to help us to distinguish the difference between the two. We then had a close look at books using sliders and levers and discussed how it made the story more interesting and fun to read!

It was then time to design our own stories based on our topic of ‘The Poles’. The children designed two different backgrounds and two different characters/objects to be their sliders and levers. They then chose their favourite. When it came to making their stories the children were excellent and looking at their design they chose.

We then evaluated our stories and discussed what we liked and what we would change if we were to make it again in order to improve our end product.

White ribbon day!

Year 1 were so grown up today in our discussion all about white ribbon day. We wanted to make a difference so we thought we could spread happiness by being kind to each other.

Watch the video’s below to see us spread positivity and some of our discussions about why we do white ribbon day!

William and Lottie spreading kindness.
