religious weddings

This week in RE, year 1 learnt about and compared different wedding traditions. They looked into Christian, Muslim and Humanist celebrations.

In Christian weddings, the children discovered that couples exchange rings and make promises to each other and God.

At a Humanist wedding, people celebrate with their friends and family and light a unity candle which represents the joining of two families.

A Muslim wedding is often bright and colourful and can last up to three days. The night before the wedding, a brides hands are decorated with henna to wish her good luck and good health.

Writing number sentences.

This week in maths we have been looking at writing number sentences relating to part-whole models.

We explored this practically first by using counters to complete a part- whole model. On our whiteboards  we then made  the  same  part-whole  model  using  numerals.  Finally  we  wrote  the  number  sentence  to  represent it. With their partners, they then made their own part-whole model between them and enjoyed writing the number sentences. Well done Year 1!

Technology around us!

Year 1 have been thoroughly enjoying our computing unit. They have been exploring the different components of a computer and learning what technology is! Here is some more of what we have been up to…

Lesson 1: Technology in our classroom.

This lesson we focused on what the word ‘technology’ actually means. We discovered it is anything made by people to help us. The children then looked at an array of photographs of things found in and outside of the classroom and sorted it into groups of technology or not. After that, the children then talked about how each item helps us.

Lesson 2: Using Technology

During the next lesson the children were excited to get to know the main parts of a laptop computer. They enjoyed learning how to turn on and log in to a computer. By the end of the lesson the children could identify a screen, keyboard and mouse/trackpad.

Lesson 3: Developing mouse skills

Now the children understood the main components of a computer, they developed their mouse skills. We looked at all different mice and how some look different but perform the same function such as the trackpad. At first we found it a bit tricky to use the mouse but when we got used to it we created some lovely pictures.

KS1 Stay and Read

Key Stage One were very excited to welcome our parents, grandparents and carers into school this week. We impressed them with our Phonics skills in a Speed Sound session and then we read a book to them.

To end the session we shared a book for pleasure with them from our class libraries.

It was lots of fun! We love to read in KS1!

Rewards and Consequences

In our second lesson on rewards and consequences, Year 2 discussed how our actions sometimes lead to consequences. The children looked at different actions and thought of an appropriate consequence for each action.

We then discussed our consequences to see if we felt they were fair.

Symbols and artefacts at our local church!

In Year 1 we had the opportunity to go visit our local church St Nicholas. We discovered what happens in a church, what is means to belong to a church and what different symbols and artefacts mean to Christians.

Rewards and Consequences

Year 2 have been  thinking about rewards and consequences in PSHE this week. We talked about positive behaviours and how it feels to be rewarded. Then we sorted behaviours into positive and negative.

Rights and Responsibilities

Year 2 have been discussing their rights and responsibilities in school in PSHE this week. They worked in groups to sort their responsibilities from the most important to the least important.

We then had a fantastic discussion about their choices.

Why are symbols important to us?

In Year 1, we have been looking closely at different symbols and their meanings. First, we identified why it is important to belong to different clubs and groups.

Then we sorted which symbols belong to each club. Peach found that she is a member of Christopher Pickering school, dance club and more! It is important to be a part of different clubs to become part of the community.

“In a club you get to make new friends”- Peach

It was exciting to see symbols from different religions such as Christianity, Islam and Humanism and learn why they are special to them.

“The cross is important to Christians and their faith”.

Bug hotels in Design AND TECHNOLOGY

Investigate

First we needed to understand what the need and purpose is for a bug hotel. Our first enquiry was ‘What are bugs/insects and why do we need them?’. We then looked at a variety of insects and why they are important for nature. We discussed how without them nothing would be able to survive (even if the children did not like them!).

We then focussed on ‘What is a bug hotel?’. From the design brief the children were excited but were still not sure what one might look like. We looked at lots of different bug hotels that were all manmade and freestanding (stands up by themselves). We thought carefully over the following questions: How the parts have been joined together? What materials have been used? and why have those been chosen? We then drew two of the structures we explored and labelled it.

Focussed Practical Task

The children loved exploring how to build a variety of freestanding structures using different materials.

They made the base bigger! This made the structure stronger.

This was not a strong freestanding structure. I asked the children how could you make it sturdier?

We folded paper in different ways so it would stand up.

We used tape to build joins.

We practically explored putting straws/hay into a plastic bottle.

We practised using a hammer and nails.

Design

The children could not wait to become designers. Before we could start designing we went on a walk around the school grounds to source natural resources. We had already collected manmade resources such as yogurt pots, milk bottles etc. Once the children knew what to use they worked in small groups to design their bug hotels sharing ideas on what materials would be best/ the purpose of each section. Finally, the children picked their favourite design and explained why.

Make

The children had so much fun putting their knowledge from the focussed practical task into action.

Using a variety of materials.

Using a hammer and nails (supervised by an adult).

The final outcome.

Evaluate

Finally the children evaluated the end product thinking about what they liked, disliked and whether they stuck to their design brief.
