Our trip to the Deep!

What a fantastic trip Year 1 had to the Deep!

There were so many exciting animals to look at! Linking with our science topic of ‘animals including humans’ it was a great opportunity to discuss and describe their different body parts and adaptations that help them suit their environment.

As we explored further we came across ‘The Kingdom of ice’ zone which immersed the children into Antarctica. We felt a huge ice wall and we discussed how this might be what an iceberg might feel like. We even got to see some penguins!

One of our favourite parts of the trip was our workshop! We played lots of fun games which helped build on our knowledge of the 7 continents and animals that live in the poles! The children have not stopped talking about all the things we saw!

This week in Religious Education we compared two faiths in order to find out their similarities and differences. We chose Christianity and Sikhism.

We discussed different symbolic items from the different faiths and their importance.

The children found it really interesting that different religions believe in different things but they noticed that both Christians and Sikhs believe in a God.

The children were then introduced to the 5 K’s which are articles of clothing that Sikhs wear out of respect for their God.

Kanga– A wooden comb to keep their hair in place.

Kirpan– A tiny sword worn by Sikhs.

Kachera- Shorts worn as underwear.

Kara- A steel bangle that reminds Sikhs to behave well.

The final K is Kesh where Sikhs keep their hair uncut to show obedience to God.

We then explored the question ‘Why do religious people celebrate important life events?’ We looked at the Sikhs celebration of taking Amrit which is a baptism into their religion. Here are some of our answers:

Autumn Walk!

What a fantastic afternoon we had looking at signs of Autumn. Our first of four trips to the park allowing us to identify and explore the different seasons and their unique characteristics. We know that each season lasts around 3 months with Autumn starting in September and finishing at the end of November.

To start our walk we used our Autumn checklist and explored the area looking for items such as conkers, leaves and pine cones. Here are some of the items we found:

During our time at the park. We were brilliant scientists and thought about some interesting questions such as ‘Do trees with bigger leaves lose their leaves first in Autumn?’ and we also did comparative tests such as ‘Which trees have the biggest leaves?’.

One of our favourite activities of the trip was doing an observational sketch of a tree. On our next visit for our Winter trip we will sketch the tree again allowing us to observe the changes overtime.

Are animal’s bodies the same as ours?

In science this week we re-capped our understanding of the human body and focussed on the enquiry ‘are animal’s bodies the same as ours?’. To start off our lesson we looked at a variety of photographs of different animals. I asked the children to identify their different features and characteristics.

After that we created two groups. One group of features we share with animals and one that we don’t. Here are some of the similarities and differences.

             Similarities                                                                             Differences

Eyes, mouth, head, legs and ears.                                    Tusks, trunks, hooves, fur, scales                                                                                                 and fins.

We had some great discussions about animal body parts and why they might have certain characteristics. We can’t wait to learn more about this next week!

In English, we have started our new story ‘Lost and Found’. This week we acted out the story as the boy and the penguin and performed it to the class. This really helped us internalise the story ready for re-telling it in our own words next week. We had some brilliant performances, well done Year 1!

Why do we have senses?

In science we have been looking at the human body. We could identify our different body parts and understand why they are important. This week, we looked at and explored our 5 senses. We started with touch. We passed round the circle a soft teddy bear, sand paper, cotton wool and playdough. The children described the objects as: “rough”, “sticky”, “fluffy” and “scratchy”. We now understand that we don’t just use our hands and fingers to touch as we can feel things with many parts of our bodies.

We then explored our sense of smell. We smelt garlic, rosemary, lavender and coffee. We agreed that they smelt very different. Some were strong and some smelt sweet!

We then explored our taste buds! We discussed how everyone has different taste buds which means we all do not like the same things. We then did a comparative test with the question does our sense of taste get stronger when we close our eyes? The majority of the children agreed it did! We used salt and sugar which we all agreed were very different. Their favourite was the sugar!

We finally explored our sense of sight and hearing by playing different sounds and identifying what was making that noise. We then turned our classroom lights on and off, exploring seeing in the light and dark! Overall, we had a lot of fun exploring our 5 senses!

Rewards and feeling proud!

To start our PSHE lesson this week we played a game of ‘switch’. The children thought of things they liked and swapped places if they liked them too. We found out that we all like different things but we also had a lot of things in common like loving chocolate cake!

We then discussed the emotion of feeling ‘proud’ and when we might feel this. We discussed how you can feel proud about lots of different things. It could be your work, doing well at a club or even for eating all your lunch! We then shared things we are proud of about ourselves.

“I am proud because I got this trophy at my dance class for trying my best” – William

“I am proud because I worked hard today in English”- Olivia

We then discussed the question ‘Are we only proud of ourselves?’. We talked about how we can be proud of our friends and their achievements. We took the time to tell our friends why we are proud of them. This made everyone feel happy.

In PSHE this week we looked at our rights and responsibilities as a member of the class. First we greeted everyone using a ball that we rolled across the floor saying each other’s names. This made us feel special and welcome!

We then said hi to Jigsaw Jack who wanted to find out how the children like to learn. They started with the sentence ‘I like learning when…’. A lot of the children mentioned our golden rules.

“When it is quiet and I can concentrate”                                       “When my friends are kind”

We then discussed 6 photographs and decided whether they showed happy or sad learning.

Finally, we re-capped our school’s golden rules and using our handprints agreed to try our best to follow them at all times!

Meeting Jigsaw Jack!

Year 1 really enjoyed their first PSHE lesson meeting Jigsaw Jack!  We started off with a lovely game called ‘pass the smile’. We discussed how this made us feel happy, loved and excited! We then talked about how we felt about coming back to school in a new year group with new teachers. We shared all sorts of worries and emotions!  To help us understand the different emotions we were feeling we read ‘The colour monster’.

The children were then introduced to our wall of colour monsters and together we read all the adjectives used to describe the different emotions! We had fun finding our faces and moving them to match how we feel. The children are looking forward to doing this everyday! Well done Year 1, you have settled in really well to the new rules and routines!

Bridlington Beach!

What a fabulous day we all had at Bridlington for our school trip! In the classroom we have been learning all about physical and human features linking to our topic of the seaside. Therefore, we were so excited to see them for ourselves! First we set off on a double decker bus! The children loved being so high up, it allowed us to discuss the different features we could see around Hull. We all knew that McDonalds was a human feature!

When we arrived we headed straight to the beach. We had a really good view of the cliffs in the distance. We discussed how they were a physical feature along with the sand and sea. We then did a sketch map of our surroundings labelling and discussing each feature. After that, we made some LandArt inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. We enjoyed showing each other our amazing creations!

We loved dipping our toes in the sea! The sand felt really soft between our toes and the water was freezing cold. Next, we had lunch along the promenade. We pretended we were wealthy Victorians parading and showing off our expensive clothes. We saw lots of amusements and gift shops. This linked with our History lessons and the children knew they were there to attract tourists from the past and today (the present)!

After walking past the harbour and discussing its purpose. One child said ‘It is like a car park but for boats!’. The children loved seeing all the different boats docked.

Finally we were lucky enough to enjoy an ice-cream with sprinkles!! We had a great day and we can’t wait to discuss what we have learnt next lesson. Well done Year 1!
