Year 1 have been thoroughly enjoying our computing unit. They have been exploring the different components of a computer and learning what technology is! Here is some more of what we have been up to…

Lesson 1: Technology in our classroom.

This lesson we focused on what the word ‘technology’ actually means. We discovered it is anything made by people to help us. The children then looked at an array of photographs of things found in and outside of the classroom and sorted it into groups of technology or not. After that, the children then talked about how each item helps us.

Lesson 2: Using Technology 

During the next lesson the children were excited to get to know the main parts of a laptop computer. They enjoyed learning how to turn on and log in to a computer. By the end of the lesson the children could identify a screen, keyboard and mouse/trackpad.

Lesson 3: Developing mouse skills

Now the children understood the main components of a computer, they developed their mouse skills. We looked at all different mice and how some look different but perform the same function such as the trackpad. At first we found it a bit tricky to use the mouse but when we got used to it we created some lovely pictures.
