YEAR 5 MUSIC: LEARNING TO PLAY THE CLARINET

We in Year 5S are thoroughly enjoying our weekly lessons with Mrs Stallard, who is teaching us to play the amazing clarinet. We have discussed the various families that an array of instruments belong to (woodwind; percussion; brass and string) and even learnt the value of different musical notes (minims= 2; crotchet =1 and quavers =1/2).

With steady hands, we have mastered putting our Clarinets together in order (Bell; Barrel; Mouthpiece; Reed then the Ligature): and through much practice, perseverance and determination,  we have even managed to create a tune…which can be quite tricky!

Budding musicians in the making! ENCORE YEAR 5!!!

YEAR 5 PE: INVASION – FOOTBALL

This term, Year 5 are revisiting and building upon their previously learnt skills in the beautiful game of Football. This week’s lesson saw the children revisiting and demonstrating the skills of dribbling, passing with the aim of maintaining control of the ball.

From this, we went on to play various ‘3v3v3 and 6v3’ games where both attackers and defenders had to draw upon and utilise the skills and knowledge they have acquired from playing football in previous year groups.

Great resilience, determination, teamwork and respect was shown throughout our lesson today…Well done Year 5C!!!

In P.E this term, Year 5 we have been incorporating both counter balance and tension balances into our Gymnastic routines. With our P.E partner, we built upon and practiced our routine each week using different apparatus.  To add complexity to our balances, we rehearsed different ways to move out of a counter balance to a counter tension balance on both high and low level apparatus.  Using both canon moves (where we transitioned from one move to another individually from our partner) and unison moves (where we transitioned at the same time as our partner), we created routines which incorporated a range of balances.

Counter balances incorporate a pushing force

Counter tension incorporate a pushing force

Here are a few of our complex routines in pictures

YEAR 6 RE – JUSTICE AND FREEDOM: IS IT FAIR?

In Year 6 this term, we have contemplated the times that we all say…

‘IT’S NOT FAIR!’

It all started with Miss Stewart treating just a few children to chocolate treats, dojos and special privileges, whereupon it was not long before many children became disgruntled and called out ‘IT’S NOT FAIR!’  We then had a class discussion as to why some children felt the injustice of Miss Stewart’s actions before everyone realised that it was all part of the planned lesson.

We then had the opportunity to share some of the injustices that we believe are not fair in our own lives…

From this, we then undertook a philosophical debate on the injustices specific groups and communities may feel within society today today…

Race
Gender
Religion
Disability

We established that whilst the trivial things in our own lives may not seem fair to us, that all people should be treated equally and with the fairness and respect that they deserve to ensure that there is justice and freedom for all in the world that we live.

To clarify – In order to make it fair…Miss Stewart did ensure that all children received a chocolate treat and a number of dojos!

YEAR 5 R.E – EXPRESSIONS: HOW IS BELIEF EXPRESSED?

This term the children in Year 5 have been exploring the ways in which people of faith express themselves.  Through observation and discussion, we have identified that clothing, symbols, religious rituals, ceremonies and worship practices allow a person of faith to express themselves, their identity as well as their devotion to their faith.  We then made comparisons in the way Autumnal religious festivals (Harvest, Diwali and Rosh Hashana) foster a sense of community, belonging and pride within faith groups. As a tasty treat, we tasted one of the traditional foods eaten during the Jewish festival of Rosh Hashana, which celebrates the beginning of the Jewish New Year in the Hebrew Calendar.

‘Apples and Honey’ symbolise the hopes for a sweet and prosperous New Year.

This term, Year 5 have been exploring and reflecting on the message Easter brings for the world today.  We have explored the Christian preparations and observance of Lent, as well as the symbolism of Ash Wednesday for this faith community.  In order to make comparisons, the Jewish festival of Pesach was also observed from which the children were able to draw that Easter and Pesach are both festivals of remembrance to honour the sacrifices which have been made by significant figures within each faith community.

To conclude the children analysed, debated and discussed various situations that are ongoing in our world today:

  • Conflict
  • Loneliness
  • Homelessness
  • Wealth and Poverty
  • Illness and suffering

From this the children drew their own conclusions to what the message of Easter continues  bring for the world today…

…HOPE, PEACE AND BELIEF.

YEAR 5 JIGSAW: HEALTHY ME – EMERGENCY AID

This term, Year 5 have been exploring and discussing the situations whereupon the need for emergency aid would be required.

We discussed the procedure for helping a casualty whilst waiting for the emergency services to arrive after calling 999. The children understood the need to keep calm so as to reassure the casualty: and to remain level headed both whilst assessing and controlling the situation whilst medical help arrives.

In order to give basic first aid, we then practiced putting our partners into the recovery position and understand that this should only be done if a casualty is breathing and that moving them would not cause any further injury.

Year 3 have taken on a Mindful approach to our Yoga sessions with Mrs Cobby this Spring term.

The children have revisited, built-upon and perfected many of the Yoga poses we have practiced in previous year groups, as well as practicing some new ones…here are just a few:

The children really enjoyed ‘Dance Yoga’ too whereupon when the music stopped they had to strike a pose with a suggested letter of the alphabet!

We have also practiced our Mindful Breathing by practicing our ‘Box-Breathing’ skills alongside our ‘Havening Touch’ and ‘Shark Breath’ techniques, which are all relaxation techniques that aim to calm both our bodies and our minds. To end each session, the children adopted the ‘Lotus’ position whilst listening to the calmful, reverberating sound of the ‘singing bowl’.

Namaste…and THANK YOU Mrs Cobby!

YEAR 3 P.E – GAMES -INVASION- HOCKEY

Year 3 have thoroughly enjoyed getting to grips with our new hockey equipment in this Spring terms unit of Hockey.

We have focused on the core skills of how to hold the hockey stick in order for our own safety and that of others; dribbling in order to keep possession of the ball;  ensuring that we remain aware of attackers and keeping control of the ball when changing direction, as well demonstrating our knowledge of making an accurate pass to maintain possession in a game.

Once we had mastered all of our knew skills we put all of our new knowledge into practice and played some mini hockey tournaments.

Well done Year 3…Jolly Hockey Sticks!!!

YEAR 3 P.E: GAMES – INVASION – NETBALL

Year 3 were introduced to the game of Netball today in P.E with the focus on the passing and receiving of the ball so as maintain possession.

After practising the passing and receiving of the ball utilising the chest-pass, we moved on to working as a team with the aim of creating and using the space around us effectively. Once we had developed our chest pass, we moved into a 5v1 game whereby the attackers had to create the space to pass the ball effectively before being intercepted by the defender.

Great TEAMWORK and ball skills YEAR 3!
