Random act of kindness week

Year 1 have been discussing random acts of kindness week.

We talked about how being kind makes others feel. We think when we are kind we make others happy.

We have discussed what types of things we can do to be kind to each other and found that lots of them are things we do because we are kind children .

We decided to do things like hold doors for people, play with children who have nobody to play with and say nice things to each other.

We are going to make lots of people smile during random acts of kindness week.

Tens and ones within 50

Year 1 have been looking at numbers within 50 in our math lessons..

We have looked closely at how these numbers are made with tens and ones.

We used our tens rods an ones cubes to make numbers before we told our partners how many tens and ones we had used.

We used lots of STEM sentences when telling our partners what we needed and what we had used to make a number.

I’ve got 2 tens and 8 ones. My number is 28.

I’ve got 3 tens and 3 ones. My number is 33.

I’ve got 1 ten and 8 ones. My number is 18.

We are getting very confident using numbers to 50.

Here we go round the mulberry bush

This week in music Year 1 have been singing ‘Here we go round the mulberry bush’.

We really enjoyed listening to and appraising this nursery rhyme.

We liked how the sounds of the words are loud and soft as we sing. We also like how some of the words repeat like the words in ‘London’s Burning’ did last week.

We found out ‘Here we go round the mulberry bush was created in the Victorian Era and Beatrix Potter would have sang this song as a child.

We were really confident singing this nursery rhyme and knew lots of different verses.

We decided to make up actions for some versions of the song.

 

Internet safety day

Year 1 listened to the story of ‘Digi Duck’ to help them understand about being safe

online and what to do if something worries them.

We talked about messages we might get and what to do if this happens.

We also talked about putting information online and who we should speak to before we ever do this.

The world is a special place

This week in RE we discussed why the world is a special place.

We recalled how Hindus believe Brahma created the world and how Christians believe God created the world. We think Hindus and Christians think the world is a special place because of how they believe it was created.

In our class discussions, we also decided the world is a special place for many different reasons.

Some of us thought the world is a special place because it’s where we live. Some also thought it is a special place because there are lots of important things in the world.

London’s burning

This week in music Year 1 have been singing the nursery rhyme ‘London’s Burning’.

We found out the song is about the great fire of London from 1666.

We have found singing in rounds very hard but enjoyed playing about with this song.

We sang in an echo because we noticed each line of the song repeated itself like and echo in a tunnel.

We also had fun making new lyrics up. We made our own verse.

Go to town, go to town”

 

 

positional language

In geography this week year 1 have ben talking about positional language.

We know lots of words like next to, in front of, behind, above and below.

We used these words to tell our friends where we wanted them to stand on a grid with pictures of Beatrix Potter characters.

We had lots of fun giving instructions to each other and then checking the instructions had been followed correctly.

We also looked at a compass and had a go at giving instruction to each other to move around the grid using North, South, East and West.

Stretching our learning

This week in PSHE, Year 1 had lots of fun.

We started our lesson with playing pass the smile. We really enjoyed copying the smile and then passing it around our circle. Smiling at each other made us feel happy.

We then listened to our special chime. This makes us feel relaxed and ready for the lesson. We listen to the sound until it stops. We hear it more clearly when we close our eyes.

We all tried to stretch ourselves as high as we can. Some of us wanted to stretch as high as the trees!

This week year 1 were challenged to make a stretch flower. They had to use skills they had not used before together with skills some of us are still perfecting.

We had to colour, cut and wind things to make a stretchy flower.

The first thing we had to do was colour our flower before we cut it out.

Then we attached a pipe cleaner to the back before we wound the pipe cleaner a pencil to make our flower stretchy.

We felt really proud of our flowers and learning new skills.

The wheels on the bus

In music this week, Year 1 have been looking at the nursery rhyme ‘The Wheels on the Bus‘.

We found out the song was first published in 1939.

We listened to different versions and talked about the verses we knew.

The nursery rhyme has changed lots over time with new verse added. We talked about how the ‘the blinkers on the bus’ would not have been in the original version as busses did not have indicators then and when we looked at pictures of an old bus we decided ‘the wipers on bus’ would have been added as well because we could not see any wipers on the bus.

We had a go at thinking of our own verse to add to the song. We composed our own verses to sing.

Year 1 liked composing verses about their pets as sometimes animals go the bus. We thought of bunnies, cats and dogs.

Why we are proud of ourselves

In PSHE this week, year 1 have been discussing what they are successful at.

We started our lesson with Jigsaw Jack. We passed him around our circle carefully and quietly. We had to work together as a class to achieve this goal.

We talked about goals we have achieved. Lots of children in year 1 did not think we had achieved any goals until we talked about the skills we now have that we didn’t have before.

Lots of children in Year 1 can tie their shoes, fasten their coats or even ride a bike.

We took it in turns to tell the class about the achievements we are proud of.
