Queen Portrait

As part of the platinum jubilee celebrations Year 1 created a large collage of Queen Elizabeth II using different materials.

We looked at different pictures of Queen Elizabeth II from the 2000’s and chose a picture we liked to copy from.

We used paint to colour the background of the picture before we use lots of different paper and card to create her dress, hat and flowers.

Year 1 were very happy with their finished piece of art work for the Jubilee.

Celebrating my special relationships

In PSHE this week Year 1 have been talking about people who are important to them.

We started our lesson by playing spin the bottle.

We span a bottle and the child it pointed at told us who was important to them and why they are important.

Jigsaw Jack had a special balloon and label today. Jigsaw Jack’s label told us why he though the children in Year 1 are important to him.

Year 1 then told each other how their important people make them feel safe and good about them selves.

Features of a letter

In English this week Year 1 have been looking at letters.

We discussed when and why people send and receive letters, before we discovered that ‘The Rainbow Fish’ had sent us a letter.

Year 1 were very excited to read the letter ‘The Rainbow Fish’ had sent. The letter asked us some questions and told us how the fish was doing after he had given all of his scales away.

Year 1 talked about the features letters contain.

We found out that letters can contain:

  • an address
  • a date
  • dear
  • a question
  • information
  • from

Making friends

This week in PSHE Year 1 have been talking about their friends and how we are kind to them.

We started our lesson by giving each other compliments and saying the things we like about each other.

We like each other because they ‘have a nice smile’, ‘make me laugh’, play with me’ or ‘kind to me’.

We did a circle time talk about how we think we are good friends.

The children in year 1 think they are good friends because they play together, are kind to each other, care about each other and make each other happy.

We also talked about things we do to be good friends such as playing with others or making friends feel better when they are sad.

Year 1 know lots of different ways in which to be good friends to each other.

medicine safety

This week Year 1 have been talking about when they are ill.

Our adults at home look after us if we are not well and give us lots of cuddles.

Our teachers look after us too if we do not feel well at school.

Sometimes we need medicine to make us feel better.

We looked at some different types of medicines that we have in our houses.

We found out that medicines can be dangerous as well as making us better.

We looked carefully at each picture and box. We found that they all have instructions on them telling you how to take them and how many times you can take it.

We all decided that our adults at home give us the right amount of medicine because they read the instructions to keep us safe.

The Monkey King

This week in RE, Year 1 have been listening to the Buddhist faith story ‘The Monkey King‘.

We really enjoyed the story and how kind the Monkey King was to his followers.

We talked about how Buddhists listen to this story and it helps them to be kinder to each other just like The Monkey King was to his followers and how the King was kind to The Monkey King after he saved the monkeys.

We thought how we could be kind to each other just like the monkeys in the story.

We also talked about how Buddhists cherish this story as it is a value of their faith and one they believe represents their God.

We had chance to act out the story of ‘The Monkey King’ and enjoyed retelling each other what happened.

Clean and Healthy

Jigsaw Jack has been helping Year 1 find out how to keep clean and healthy this week.

We started our lesson by telling Jigsaw Jack how germs spread. We decided there are germs when things are dirty and that it is important to keep things clean. In school, we keep our hands clean through the day by washing them and using sanitiser. The cleaners help keep our classroom clean by washing the tables and doors.

Adults at home keep things clean and healthy by washing surfaces and clothes and making sure we stay clean.

We looked at pictures of things we have in our houses that we use to keep us clean and healthy.

Not everything that adults use at home are safe. Some things we use to clean can make us ill.

We sorted lots of items into which room we might use them in.

We decided that not all things used in a home to keep things clean are safe for us to use.

We think soap and toothpaste is safe for us but we shouldn’t be touching bleach or toilet cleaner. We found out some of the things our adults use to clean contain chemicals which can be dangerous for us to use.

As scientists this week, Year 1 have been carrying out comparative tests to identify which materials are the most suitable to make a waterproof hat for Barney the Bear.

We begun by discussing which materials we though would be waterproof. Lots of us though tin foil, plastic and wood were going to not let water through them.

We recorded our predictions on a table before we carried out a fair test.

First we put Barney in a bowl, then we held materials above his head and put water on them with a pipette. We observed what happened to the water once it was on the material. Some materials soaked up the water and we knew this meant they weren’t waterproof. Other materials just made the water run off and we knew these were waterproof.

Lots of us were surprised that the wood was not waterproof. the water soaked in to the wood.

We observed very closely how the water soaked into the material and paper and how the water just sat in a puddle on top of the metal, plastic and tin foil.

We decided that Barneys hat should be made of plastic as this was the softest of the waterproof materials. We though wood would be too heavy and the tin foil would be very noisy in the rain.

Being Healthy

In PSHE this week, Year 1 have been discussing what makes us healthy.

We looked at some statements and decided if they were healthy or unhealthy.

We moved around the room to the correct label when we heard the statements.

We decided a good nights sleep was healthy and that eating takeaway every day was unhealthy.

We then acted out some of the things we thought were healthy.

Washing our hands is healthy.

A good night sleep is healthy

Exercising is healthy

In RE this week Year 1 have been discussing how the world is cared for.

We talked about how religious people think the world needs to be looked after as they believe it was created by their god.

Some religious people donate to charities, some do work in their local communities and others volunteer to work with charities to name a few things.

We think it is very important to look after the world too and we discussed about how we can look after it.

These are some of the things we will do.
