library

Mrs Smith’s class were very excited to visit the library this week.

We love to look at the books and share stories with each other. It is always calm and relaxing when we visit the library. It helps us to clear our minds and get lost in a magical world far away when we read some of the amazing fiction books we have.

We can’t wait until our next visit when get to read more books.

Mental health

Year 3 have spent time this Mental Health Awareness Week discussing how we belong.

Some of us belong with our families, some with sports teams, some with friends, some with clubs. We realised we all belonged somewhere and that we are a really important part of something. One of the most important places we belong is in our classroom with our peers and our teacher.

Stone age

Year 3 started our new topic this week by looking at items that were used during the Stoneage.

We had chance to look carefully at some artefacts from the Stoneage period. We had to discuss them and decide what we thought they were. Some artefacts were easy to identify such as a child’s shoes, others were a little more trick such as the wooden toy bison and the drinking vessel with an animal skin lid. We were really impressed that people could make these items with the little tools they had.

chronology

Year 3 were very excited to find out what our new topi is this term.

We began by exploring the school time line. We quickly identified where we are now and could see lots of information that we have already discovered such as Queen Elizabeth II, Titanic sinking and man landing on the moon. WE noticed that many of these events happened a long time ago but they were only on the last little bit of the timeline. When we looked closer we saw that the time line had big periods many years ago called StoneAge, Bronze Age and Iron Age but we did not really know what these were.

This term we are going to be finding out all about these time periods and how life changed through the Stone Age right through to the end of the Iron Age. We discovered what prehistoric meant and how BCE and CE are used to distinguish these time periods, we also used AD and BC. These helped us to put some big events in chronological order such as the discovery of bronze and the use of iron. We are looking forward to finding out how life change so many years ago.

soup

As part of our Design and Technology unit in Year 3 this term, we are creating healthy soups that the fishermen could take on trips with them.

Before we can create our soups we have talked about healthy ingredients and what we could put in our soups. As part of the preparation to make soup we talked about how to cut the vegetables we are going to use.

We have practised our cutting skills this week in preparation for making our soup.

We all had the opportunity to practise both our claw and bridge grips to make sure we could cut our vegetables safely and securely.

We also had to decide which vegetables would be good for our soup. We discussed seasonality and which vegetables are available in the autumn season in England. We also tasted some vegetables so we could decide on which flavours we would like in our soup.

To create our soup we worked collaboratively to decide on a recipe including the vegetables we would use and the stock that would create the base of the soup.

When the soup was cooked we tasted and evaluated it to see if we had met the design brief and created a healthy soup for a fisherman.

Forces

Year 3 have started our new science unit on forces by experimenting and investigating which forces are need to play with toys.

We have discovered forces such as push and pull are needed for some toys to work. We had to pull the figure to make it stretch, we had to push the ball to make it roll and we had to push the spinning top to make it spin around.

We also looked at a magnetic fishing game and how these forces are different to the toys we had to make work. We can’t wait to start finding out more about magnets during this topic.

atlases

This week in geography, Year 3 have been using atlases.

We have begun to identify countries in Europe with the use of an atlas. We could identify England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland independently. We then began to find FranceBelgium and The Netherlands as these are the countries which are closest to Hull.

We can use our atlas and our knowledge of compass points to find European countries which are north, south, east or west in relation to where Hull is.

We enjoyed using the atlases and worked together to identify lots of European countries.

ordinance survey

As part of our geography this term, Year 3 have been using  digimaps on the computers. We have been able to look at maps of our local area and identify features from them.

Today, we have used ordinance survey icons to help us. We first identified symbols that were on our maps then used an ordinance survey key to help us identify what these features were. We looked at maps from moderday, 1950’s and 1890’s to compare any changes that had happened in our local area. We quickly spotted that things like churches have always been in our local area. We also spotted that things like viewing areas are a newer addition to our area as these were not on the earlier maps.

We really enjoyed using these ordinance survey symbols to help us identify lots of different      features in our local area.

odd socks day

Year 3 have celebrated Odd Socks Day to mark the start of Anti‑Bullying Week by wearing odd socks. We have discussed what makes each of us unique – and reinforced the idea that differences are something to be celebrated, not bullied. We have helped to spread the message: everyone is welcome, everyone belongs, and kindness to each other matters

cross the river

In PE, Year 3 have been playing “Cross the River” which is a cooperative game where teams use hoops to move everyone across a designated “river” (the MUGA) without touching the “water,” promoting problem-solving, teamwork, and gross motor skills by requiring players to strategically move hoops forward and only stand in these hoops, restarting if anyone falls in. We had to coordinate movements to pass hoops from back to front to keep the “raft” moving. We worked well as teams and quickly found how to communicate with each other.
