English Debate

Within our English unit, we are focusing on persuasive letters. Yesterday, we had a whole class debate regarding a school gym being built at Christopher Pickering. The class did amazingly with rebutting their arguments!

Y5 Geography Field Work Visit

Tuesday 4th June 2024

To enhance our Geographical knowledge, Y5 took at coach trip to different locations along the river Hull.

Our first stop was in the city centre, at the mouth of the river, where the River Hull meets the River Humber. Here we created wonderful sketch maps to help us identify how land is used in that area and how features such as the tidal barrier are used to help prevent our low-lying city from flooding.

Our second stop was in the village of Dunswell. We walked beside the mid-part of the river here, we were able to identify that the land use had completely changed and that is was a very rural area. Our Y5 students were able to confidently talk about the features of the river, such as the meander, after all of their great work in class.

Claire and the Team at Ings Lane Garden Centre made us feel very welcome, we popped in there to buy ice creams and treats after our long riverside walk. We were invited to look at their fish which were mesmerising!

Our final stop was a bit if a cheat! It was not the source of the River Hull, it was somewhere a little closer to home that mimicked the source – the very shallow stream at Brantingham. Here we were able to safely get closer to the water to measure the velocity and depth of the river at this early stage. Our year five students worked brilliantly as a team using their tools to develop their Geographical field work skills.

At half two, we hopped back on the bus all set to go back to school in good time and the bus wouldn’t start! The lovely people at Ellie Rose sent a replacement bus so we got to have some extra fun time in the beautiful village of Brantingham whilst we waited for that to arrive. This gave us the chance to hike up Brantingham Dale again and take in the lovely sights – from up there we could see the River Humber, the woodlands and sheep grazing on the hillside with their beautiful lambs.

Instead of car-e-oke, we had bus-e-oke on the way back with the talented boys booming out the hits! X-Factor here they come 🙂

This term, Year 5 have been exploring and reflecting on the message Easter brings for the world today.  We have explored the Christian preparations and observance of Lent, as well as the symbolism of Ash Wednesday for this faith community.  In order to make comparisons, the Jewish festival of Pesach was also observed from which the children were able to draw that Easter and Pesach are both festivals of remembrance to honour the sacrifices which have been made by significant figures within each faith community.

To conclude the children analysed, debated and discussed various situations that are ongoing in our world today:

  • Conflict
  • Loneliness
  • Homelessness
  • Wealth and Poverty
  • Illness and suffering

From this the children drew their own conclusions to what the message of Easter continues  bring for the world today…

…HOPE, PEACE AND BELIEF.

Hymers Invitational Cup

What a great day of football we’ve had! Today our U11s boys football team attended the Hymers College Invitational Cup. This was a one day tournament with the boys playing a league in the morning and a knockout cup in the afternoon. After a slow start, the boys found some form in the morning and finished in the top for of their group, progressing to the cup in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the afternoon proved very tricky and we were sadly knocked out.

Overall, the boys played ten games which were all played in the right spirit and excellent sporting values were demonstrated throughout.

Well done boys, we’re very proud of your efforts.

U11s Cup Team (L-R): Parker O, Kye S, Billy B, Harry Y, Cohen O, Max W, Buddy-Lee J, Farai G (c) and Archie C.

YEAR 5 JIGSAW: HEALTHY ME – EMERGENCY AID

This term, Year 5 have been exploring and discussing the situations whereupon the need for emergency aid would be required.

We discussed the procedure for helping a casualty whilst waiting for the emergency services to arrive after calling 999. The children understood the need to keep calm so as to reassure the casualty: and to remain level headed both whilst assessing and controlling the situation whilst medical help arrives.

In order to give basic first aid, we then practiced putting our partners into the recovery position and understand that this should only be done if a casualty is breathing and that moving them would not cause any further injury.

final designs

Our final stage of our DT learning journey: making bread.

Today the children made their ‘bread in a bag’ by working through a range of instructions. They then moulded their mixture to fit with their final designs, added their desired toppings, and ended up with delicious bread that is fit for an Anglo-Saxon and Viking feast!

The pod smelt good enough to eat!

Bread investigation

In our DT unit, year 5 are investigating, designing and making bread that is fit for an Anglo-Saxon feast.

In today’s lesson, the children watched a demonstration of how bread is made. Miss Mead showed the children the step-by-step process that must be followed to create delicious bread!

The children were extremely enthusiastic and loved to help.

British Science Week

Miss Mead’s class had such a brilliant time at Sirius Academy for British Science Week! We experimented with different chemicals to see how fireworks are created.

KCOM Online Primary School Chess Competition!

This week, our chess league got under way with games against New Pasture Primary and Reedness Primary School. Our children played two games (black and white) against opposing players over the internet! We’ve had some good results so far – league updates to follow.

Cael, Burak and Rebecca mid-game against New Pasture Primary.

Our games are being played online via a website called Lichess.
