Today we ended the Autumn term with our first ever Santa Run – and what fun it was! Thank you so much to parents who made a fantastic effort to dress up along with children and run the course around our school field. The funds we raised will be put to good use for new outdoor equipment. Merry Christmas!

EFK Kids Cup Qualifier

Tonight our Y56 boys took part in the EFL Kids Cup qualifier event at South Huntley and what a cold night it was! The boys played a round robin against Elloughton, Brough, Airmyn, Anlaby Acre Head and Anlaby Primary. All of the games were very close, with our biggest defeat being 2-0. Overall we finished 4th but ended the night with a great win against Anlaby.

HAS Timed Badminton Championships

This morning, ten of our Y56s headed down to Hull University for the Hull Active School’s Timed Badminton Championships! The children had a great morning playing against teams from Griffin and Eastfield; we even played against ourselves. All of our children who took part are currently playing badminton outside of school so this was a great chance to use their skills to represent the school in a sport they love.

Some fantastic skills on show from our Y5s

A fantastic result for our Y6 team who finished 3rd!

Music with Mrs Stallard

Year 6 have started their music lessons for this half-term with Mrs Stallard. In today’s lesson, the children created melody using the glockenspiels.

What an amazing job they did!

YEAR 5 MUSIC: LEARNING TO PLAY THE CLARINET

We in Year 5S are thoroughly enjoying our weekly lessons with Mrs Stallard, who is teaching us to play the amazing clarinet. We have discussed the various families that an array of instruments belong to (woodwind; percussion; brass and string) and even learnt the value of different musical notes (minims= 2; crotchet =1 and quavers =1/2).

With steady hands, we have mastered putting our Clarinets together in order (Bell; Barrel; Mouthpiece; Reed then the Ligature): and through much practice, perseverance and determination,  we have even managed to create a tune…which can be quite tricky!

Budding musicians in the making! ENCORE YEAR 5!!!

YEAR 5 PE: INVASION – FOOTBALL

This term, Year 5 are revisiting and building upon their previously learnt skills in the beautiful game of Football. This week’s lesson saw the children revisiting and demonstrating the skills of dribbling, passing with the aim of maintaining control of the ball.

From this, we went on to play various ‘3v3v3 and 6v3’ games where both attackers and defenders had to draw upon and utilise the skills and knowledge they have acquired from playing football in previous year groups.

Great resilience, determination, teamwork and respect was shown throughout our lesson today…Well done Year 5C!!!

In P.E this term, Year 5 we have been incorporating both counter balance and tension balances into our Gymnastic routines. With our P.E partner, we built upon and practiced our routine each week using different apparatus.  To add complexity to our balances, we rehearsed different ways to move out of a counter balance to a counter tension balance on both high and low level apparatus.  Using both canon moves (where we transitioned from one move to another individually from our partner) and unison moves (where we transitioned at the same time as our partner), we created routines which incorporated a range of balances.

Counter balances incorporate a pushing force

Counter tension incorporate a pushing force

Here are a few of our complex routines in pictures

YEAR 6 RE – JUSTICE AND FREEDOM: IS IT FAIR?

In Year 6 this term, we have contemplated the times that we all say…

‘IT’S NOT FAIR!’

It all started with Miss Stewart treating just a few children to chocolate treats, dojos and special privileges, whereupon it was not long before many children became disgruntled and called out ‘IT’S NOT FAIR!’  We then had a class discussion as to why some children felt the injustice of Miss Stewart’s actions before everyone realised that it was all part of the planned lesson.

We then had the opportunity to share some of the injustices that we believe are not fair in our own lives…

From this, we then undertook a philosophical debate on the injustices specific groups and communities may feel within society today today…

Race
Gender
Religion
Disability

We established that whilst the trivial things in our own lives may not seem fair to us, that all people should be treated equally and with the fairness and respect that they deserve to ensure that there is justice and freedom for all in the world that we live.

To clarify – In order to make it fair…Miss Stewart did ensure that all children received a chocolate treat and a number of dojos!

YEAR 5 R.E – EXPRESSIONS: HOW IS BELIEF EXPRESSED?

This term the children in Year 5 have been exploring the ways in which people of faith express themselves.  Through observation and discussion, we have identified that clothing, symbols, religious rituals, ceremonies and worship practices allow a person of faith to express themselves, their identity as well as their devotion to their faith.  We then made comparisons in the way Autumnal religious festivals (Harvest, Diwali and Rosh Hashana) foster a sense of community, belonging and pride within faith groups. As a tasty treat, we tasted one of the traditional foods eaten during the Jewish festival of Rosh Hashana, which celebrates the beginning of the Jewish New Year in the Hebrew Calendar.

‘Apples and Honey’ symbolise the hopes for a sweet and prosperous New Year.
