Art in Year 1

This term in Y1 we are looking at some of the work of Roy Lichtenstein and are studying still life drawing and some aspects of Pop Art.

First we used different pencils and made a variety of thick, thin, curved, straight, dark and light lines, we drew shapes and practised shading and creating ‘Ben Day’ dots inside them. We practised looking closely at shells to draw observationally focussing on the shape, lines and shading.

Once we were happy with our pieces we used the class still life composition to draw our own version of ‘Still Life with Brushes, Shells and Starfish’. Once we had finished the observational drawing we used a black pen to  draw round the outlines and then we painted it in Brusho.

Y1 love BOOMWHACKERS!

In Y1 we have started to learn to play the Boomwhackers and found out they are percussion instruments.

First, we observed that all of the tubes were not only different colours but were all different sizes and they all made different noises when we hit them against a hard surface. We learned that vibrations made the Boomwhackers make a noise. The larger Boomwhackers vibrate at a lower frequency so make lower pitch whereas the shorter ones vibrate quicker and therefore make a higher pitch.

Then, we appraised a version of ‘Old Town Road’ that was performed using these instruments – we all thought it was great and sang along! When we watched closely we observed that all of the musicians hit a different colour Boomwhacker to make the tune. We soon found out that when the Boomwhackers are banged all at once and constantly it makes a very lound noise and no tune at all! Mrs Yardley had a headache!

We looked at scales and found out when we hit the Boomwhackers in order of length it made a scale of increasing levels of pitch! We practised and had fun!

We worked very hard during the Spring term, some of us at school and some of us at home! We enjoyed being Historians during this topic and learning all about Beatrix Potter’s life and then during the Victorian period what life was like in schools and then what life was like for rich and poor children. We were all very glad we are at school today rather than then!

We worked independently to present all of our findings in History – we were all very proud of what we achieved!

Jessica recalled ‘If families were poor boys and girls would have to work in factories to get food to eat.’

Ava stated “Beatrix Potter is remembered for writing a book called Peter Rabbit and we like this story! She didn’t go to school and instead a governess came and taught her at home.”

Comic Relief 2021

In Y1, we had a great day celebrating Comic Relief in Y1! We all came as superheroes and people who are heroes to us! We had lots of Supergirls, Supermen, Bat men and Batgirls.

We learned about the importance of Comic Relief and all of the good things it does to help people living incredibly tough lives.

Victorian Artefacts

In Year 1 we are comparing our lives today to what life would have been like for Beatrix Potter in the Victorian Era.

We know that Beatrix Potter was born about 150 years ago and we all know that even Mrs Yardley isn’t that old, so it was a very long time ago!

We looked at photographs of what Beatrix Potters bedroom would have been like, the clothes she would have worn (Myla was very pleased that girls don’t wear these bonnets today) and what sort of thing she would have eaten for breakfast  – we were all glad that we have lots of delicious cereals today. We know that Beatrix Potter didn’t get taught in a school, she had a lady teach her at home called a governess. Instead doing all of the fun lesson like we would do in an afternoon, she would get taught how to embroider.

We looked at the types of toys she would have played with – they were all made out of wood and tin unlike ours. We were quite shocked that she would not have been able to play with an i-pad or watch television after a day at school! We enjoyed looking at and exploring the artefacts – we looked at the wooden doll crib, the ball and cup, the spinning top and the cannon toy. Although they were interesting we were all glad that we have lots of other toys to play with today!

Y1 Map Work

In Year 1 we have been learning about maps. We have been looking at world maps, maps of the UK, street maps and transport maps.

We used Google Earth and Digimaps to zoom in on our planet, the continent we live in (Europe), our country (England), our city (Hull) and then our school (Christopher Pickering Primary). We all loved zooming in and finding the streets that we live on too – some of us were able to spot our house!

We looked at school and what it looked like from an aerial view – some of us thought that from a birds eye view our school looks like a rabbits head and ears!

We found out that we would be labelling a map of the school and trying to find some of the physical and human features that we have here.

Although we see parts of our school everyday, we decided to go and have a look at some of the features. We found the forest area and knew that this was a physical feature and we found the car park and we knew that this was a human feature.

Once we had been all around school we came back into the classroom and wrote down some of the things that we saw and made a symbol to represent it.

Cyber-Bullying

By Ava-May and Pippa

In one of our digital leaders meetings we looked at Cyber-Bullying, this is a serious thing to do online. It is where someone bullies someone else online. If you for some unacceptable reason, you need to think about how you would feel if you were cyber-bullied as you could have the same feelings as someone else being cyber-bullied. Say if you posted a picture of yourself on social media and you got cyber-bullied for the way you look, it could make you feel insecure about your features and the way you look. If someone is bullying you online, no matter what reason for, then tell a trusted adult and keep the evidence.

If someone was bullying you on a game, don’t hesitate to report them, it could help a lot as they might not just be targeting you. If you were being bullied online, don’t just let them bully you, stand up for yourself. I they don’t leave you alone after that, then tell someone around, whether it is someone you know or not, if they are a trusted adult then they will probably be able to give more advise than anyone else on how to stop them from bullying you. If you are on a game and someone randomly starts cyber-bullying you and there isn’t a report button then maybe figure out the game developers email and tell them that they are bullying you and maybe ask them to ban the person who is bullying you. If they are making you feel upset about what they are saying or worried that maybe it could be happening to someone you know personally or online, then there are lots of people who can help you. Such people are: your teacher, parents, carers or call a ChildLine. Childline will listen to what you have to say and help you. Even if it isn’t repetitive cyber-bullying, it is still not nice to experience or do. So, in that case, stay safe online.

Who has been in Year 1?

Today in Year 1 we are being detectives and trying to think who has visited us. Who could it be?

We used the clues that had been left to write some interesting sentences using the word because.

Some of us thought it could be a White Witch because on the table was a gold, sparkly crown and some white snow.

Hopefully we can find out tomorrow who it really was ……..

Y1 Ball Skills

Today was our first lesson on ball skills in Y1 and we all loved it!

We learned lots about how to control the ball, what dribbling means and how many different ways we could send a ball!
We also looked at why we have to keep our eye on the ball and why we have to be accurate when we are throwing!

Hey You!

In Year 1 we have been listen to and appraising rap music! We all loved it and enjoyed dancing to the rhythm and pulse! We liked listening to the words and finding out what the rappers were saying.

Alongside this we all got to perform our very own rap song called Hey You! from Charanga. We have been learning the song and rap sections from it.
