Coronation Art with Charlotte Eldred

On Thursday, Year 3 and 4 were very lucky as we had local artist, Charlotte Eldred in to work with us and we took part in a ‘Doodling Workshop’ based on the invitations for the Coronation.

A man called Andrew Jamieson designed the invites and before coming into our school, Charlotte asked permission to create doodles inspired by his work and he said yes! He also asked her to send some of the finished pieces to him so some of our work will be with the man who designed to invites! How exciting!

In Mrs Yardley’s class we worked hard on drawing outlines of crowns and lions (lions based on the crest) and then spent time doodling our own designs into the crowns!

As King Charles will be the third king as Charles and as he loves the environment so much we used these things to inspire our doodles. We think they all turned out pretty good!

Why are bees so important?

To coincide with Earth Day and making our pledges, we learnt all about bees, why they are crucial to life on earth and that they are sadly dying out.. We couldn’t believe that in the UK alone, around 70 crops depend on bee pollination. While there are other methods of pollination, including by other animals and the wind, wild bees can pollinate on a much bigger and more efficient scale. Estimates suggest it would cost UK farmers an incredible £1.8 billion a year to manually pollinate their crops.

We found out that one of the main reasons for bees dying is because they are losing their habitats due to humans building on woodland and grassland areas and different farming techniques.

To do our bit for bees, we planted a wildflower bee garden and hope that it will attract bees once it is grown.

Y3 Tag Rugby

This half of the summer term, Y3 are working with Tigers Trust and are learning how to play tag rugby.

We discussed the rules and then practiced how to score a try ensuring both hands are on the ball and the ball is put on the floor not just dropped. We then looked at how to carry out a basic pass and practiced this!

Y3 are learning about Money

In Y3, we have just started our unit about money. In this small step, children consolidated their knowledge of notes and coins from previous years and all did very well. In Year 2, children found that different combinations of coins could equal the same amount and we explored this further by making different amounts using the £ and p notation. We  then worked on comparing different amounts using < > and =.

Year 3 Fair Test Investigation

In Year 3 in science, our unit of work at the moment is plants. We have been learning all about features of plants and have been identifying and describing the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowers and conditions they need to grow.

This lesson we have been exploring the requirements of plants for life and growth (air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow) and what will happen if we take away one of those requirements. To do this, we carried out a comparative and fair test investigation – we worked in groups of 3, identified the requirements and which variable we would be taking away to check and how we would make it a fair test and decided we would have a control plat and one that would have a variable taken away.

We made predictions for what would happen to the plant that has all the requirements needed to grow and then to the plant that had one variable taken away. We explained our methods and drew diagrams.

After that, we planted our plants making sure that if they both had water then they had the same amounts, the ones without light were put in a dark place and if they didn’t have warmth were left outside.

We will keep measuring both plants to conclude the investigations.

Y3 are Performers!

A huge well done to all of the Y3 children who took part in the Chinese Whispers concert at Middleton Hall on Wednesday 19th April. All children were fabulous and were very brave and confident standing on stage and performing to all of those people.

The Chinese Whispers™ Project embraces culture and creativity. Its intercultural agenda focusses on developing awareness, competence and citizenship in local members of the community and we have been lucky enough to work on this for two years now.

The children have loved participating in this project and have been very lucky to have had the opportunity to perform in front of an audience and be able to watch some of the very talented Chinese artists that also performed that night.

Over the course of the project, children have been able to play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices  with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression, listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory, appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn
from different traditions.

Times Tables Rock Stars Day!!

All of Year 3 and 4 are doing so well learning all of their times tables so on Thursday we had a times tables day where we had lots of battles between classes, year groups and the teachers! We all had our own chrome book so we were able to battle away and get better at our times tables!

Tigers Trust came into school and worked with each class on some interactive maths. In partners we had to throw the beanbag into a numbered hoop, times those numbers together then work out the answer. We had a minute to complete as many calculations and then it was our opponents go – we had lots of high scores!

We finished off the day with an amazing disco where LOTS of rock songs were played and we had the chance to do some air guitar and then we had an awards ceremony to crown the winners! Don’t we all look great?

Art in Year 3

In the past few art lessons, we have been learning all about  Street art, particularly Graffiti. We know that it is not vandalism if you are given permission to do it, so we have written some very good persuasive letters to Mrs. Marson to ask if we can graffiti the container on the playground!   We have learnt that cave art was the earliest form of graffiti and many artists today also do it to send a message or tell a story. We looked at a variety of examples of lettering and tags and were given the chance to design our own tag.

First, we experimented with different types of writing and wrote our the alphabet with a range of designs and colours using oil pastels.

Then we designed our tags! We had lots of ideas from Mr Z to using our initials.

Finally, we had a practice using the fabric paints on small pieces of fabric to develop our skills using the brushes and holding the fabric tight ready for next week when we create our          T-shirts.

Year 3 – Science Fiction Stories

Today in Year 3, to start our new unit of work, we were given a tray of objects and pictures. Using this information we had to work with our groups to make predictions about what our new unit of work could be.

As we use our detective skills in history so much, this was a challenge that we were positive we could solve!

We discovered that it was about a robot named Bibo, who had a 10,000 year warranty and was built a long time ago. We found out that he was once popular and liked to be sociable. He sold ice creams to lots of people but for some reason nobody came to him anymore to buy any. We wanted to find out more so we watched the film clip!

Year 3 are carrying out ‘Fair Test Investigations’

In Year 3 today, we were investigating – ‘Can people with longer femurs jump further?’

We all made a prediction and about half the class thought that it would affect the distance and the other half thought that it would not.

We discussed how we could possibly test this out and we decided that we would need to measure our own femur then compare this to other people in the class. We said that we would then get these people to carry out two jumps and we would record the distance to work out the theory.

We write down the method then looked at how we would make this test a fair one – we would all need to do the same type of jump, we would need to jump from the same starting point and we would need to measure the distance in the same way.

We carried put the tests and recorded our results in a table.

We concluded that you did not have to have a longer femur to jump further.
