Story Mapping

In Year 5’s English lesson, this morning, we started our brand new unit ‘The Lighthouse’. Within our new unit, we began to piece the story together by creating our own Story Map. Our creations focused on the characters, plot, opening, build up, dilemma, resolution and ending. We had so much fun putting our knowledge into practice!

Prison Me? No way!

Year 5/6 have had an amazing day with the staff of Prison Me? No Way! The children had the experience of encountering a real life prison cell and how inmates spend their day in prison. We learnt a lot of brilliant information!

Mental Health Awareness Week!

As it is Mental Health Awareness Week, Miss Mead’s class have been discussing how we can remain happy, healthy and comfortable in our daily lives. We came up with lots of ideas of what makes us feel safe!

In PSHCE this week, Y5MEA were discussing situations that could happen online and whether they are safe or unsafe. Each child had their own cards: safe, unsafe and I’m not sure. The children used these cards to show their thoughts and whether they believed that certain situations online could have positive/negative consequences. As a class, we shared our opinions and debated the positives and negatives about online communities.

Year 5 DT – Focused Practical Task

Today, Year 5 continued their Anglo Saxon and Vikings Design and Technology unit. We began the unit with an introduction to what yeast is and how it is an essential ingredient to make bread. We then had a Year 5 Great British Bake Off where the children practiced making their own bread in a bag with the help of the teachers.

To make our bread, we mixed together: flour, sugar, water, oil, salt and yeast. We then let the bread rise for 10 minutes until the dough had risen. Finally, the children practiced moulding their dough into a shape of their choice, such as a flower, baguette, flatbread, heart, letters, twists, plait and many more exciting shapes.

Here are some images of the children’s work and the shape they decided to create for their bread!

Year 5 Sirius Science Trip

Year 5 had a brilliant afternoon at Sirius Academy West testing lots of chemicals to reveal their special colours! With this knowledge, the children also discussed how fireworks are made and which chemicals are used to create their colours.

Well done to our well deserved winners: Ethan Thomson and Hamdi Dogan! #ScienceWeek

Etching – Year 5 Art

This week in our Art lesson, year 5  enhanced their skills of ‘etching’.

Firstly, the children choose their preferred Celtic symbol from a previous art lesson, they then etched their design onto a polystyrene tile to create an imprint. After this, the children chose a choice of colour from the painting ink (they loved this bit!) and placed their tile in the painting ink. Using a roller to embed the colour, the children carefully removed their tile to reveal the etched Celtic symbol. Finally, their tiles were placed onto a page in art books, making their final print.

Here are some snapshots of the different stages of the lesson, showing how much fun the children in Y5MEA had!

The Circus

During our PE lessons over the past 4 weeks, the children of Y5MEA have taken part in a dance unit ‘The Circus’. Within this unit, we have focused on circus acts in the 1850s.

This week, the children worked in groups to create their own routine incorporating a ringmaster. The role of the ringmaster is to introduce the acts in a circus show and guide the audience through the experience, directing their attention to the various areas of the circus, helping to link the acts together. Whilst including a ringmaster, the children also had to become different acts of the circus, including: tightrope walker, strongman, freaks, juggler and acrobats. The children confidently performed their routines, putting their skills into practice.

Y5MEA are really enjoying their PE lessons!

We are historians!

This week, Y5MEA have been historians! The children examined a range of sources of evidence linked to the Viking raids at Lindisfarne to come to conclusions about the events.

The children answered these big questions:

  • What can you conclude about what happened at Lindisfarne?
  • How reliable is each source of evidence?
  • Is it a primary or secondary source of evidence?

After examining a range of sources of evidence linked to the Viking attacks on Lindisfarne, the children created a conclusion about what they think happened during the attack.

Year 5 Computing – To use the count tool to answer hypotheses about common letters in use.

In Computing this week, Year 5 investigated how to use spreadsheets for literacy. Prior to the children putting their knowledge into practice, we recapped ‘Advance Mode, ‘How Many?’ Tool and Variables. Using this knowledge, we made a vowel counter spreadsheet that enabled us to test if ‘e’ really is the most popular vowel.

After this, the children improved the spreadsheet with consonants and conjunctions; testing the most popular one and comparing it to some research.
