Norse Mythology Work!

To introduce our new topic, Anglo Saxons and Vikings, Year 5 learned about Norse Mythology and some key characters within Norse Myths.

The children then worked collaboratively to analyse a Norse Myth; exploring grammatical features such as parenthesis, direct speech, modal verbs, fronted adverbials and much more! The reason for this activity was for the children to familiarise themselves with Norse Mythology features and how grammatical features are used to create effect.

Well done Year 5!

Year 5 D&T – Focused Practical Task

In our D&T unit we are designing, making and evaluating our very own sandals.

This afternoon, Year 5 watched a demonstration of how to create a template for the soles of their sandals and then made their own templates. We then watched a demonstration of how to use this template to create the soles of the sandals (using cork), ensuring minimal wastage.

Year 5 History – The Olympics!

In our History lesson, Y5 learned all about the Olympics and the timeline of events that have occurred in order to make the Olympic Games what they are today.

We understood that the Olympics first took place in Olympia, Ancient Greece and there was only one event – the men’s 200m sprint!

The children worked in groups to order the event cards of the Olympics into chronological order. They needed to work as a team to choose which Olympic event happened first, which took place most recently and what came in between!

We then discussed how the Olympics has changed and developed over time.

Well done Year 5!

In our PSHE lesson today, we looked at bullying and discussed how our words and actions can hurt others. We discussed bullying and the different types of bullying i.e. sexism, racism, homophobia, rumour spreading, cyber-bullying, name calling and verbal and physical bullying.

We discussed ways in how we can deal with bullying to make the situation better. For example, telling an adult, blocking the person if the bullying is occurring online and not retaliating. We also discussed ways in which a bullying situation could be made worse. For example joining in with bullying or not telling an adult if you witness a bullying incident.

Finally, we talked about the differences between direct and indirect bullying and examples of both types.

The children then worked in groups to come up with their own bullying scenario and then six ways to help solve the scenario and six ways that the situation could be made worse. With their scenario and reasons, the children created their own snakes and ladders game.

We finished our lessons on bullying by playing our games.

Year 5 Art Lesson!

During our art lesson today, Y5M were using manikins and sketching what they could see. The children were moving the manikins into different positions and then created a final sketch of their manikin. We had a lovely afternoon and the children produced some outstanding art work!
