Ball skills

This week in Year 2 we have been looking at ball skills using our feet.

We have looked at how we pass the all accurately and with control to get it to where we want it.  We know how to use the inside of our foot and the amount of force we need to use based on the distance we want the ball to travel.

We practised our skills with a partner before we played a game of ‘Mud Monsters‘.

We had to pass our ball to our partners and move around the hall whilst dribbling using control. If our ball touched a cone then we became stuck and couldn’t move.

It was a fun game to play and helped us think about our passing skills.

Silent Night

This week in music Year 2 are continuing to appraise the songs we are going to perform in our Christmas service.

This week we have appraised ‘Silent Night‘. We liked this song as it was slow and made us all feel relaxed.

The notes were very long and we talked about how we need to fill our lungs with air to hold the long  notes when we perform.

We listened to different versions of the song and talked about the different instruments we could hear. We identified a guitar and violin on one version but could only hear the piano on another. We liked the sound of the violin as this was gentle and soft.

This week in history Year 3 have been looking at the Blitz and the impact this had on Hull.

We have looked at how the building were damaged and how the landscape of Hull changed.

We found out that 95% of buildings in Hull were either destroyed or damaged during the Blitz.

Year 3 were amazed to find out that Hull was the most severely damaged location in the UK during WWII.

We identified that the Germans wanted to damage Hull as it was an important port which was used during the war effort.

Away in a manger

This week in music Year 2 are very excited to start thinking about songs we are going to perform in our church Christmas service.

We have begun by appraising and singing ‘Away in a Manger

Year 2 talked about how gentle and soft the music sounded and how our voices needed to be the same. We had to practise the song lots as there are some longer notes we found a little tricky.

We could hear the piano in the music and talked about the different notes it was playing as well as how these notes were soft and soothing.

Away in a Manger made us feel calm.

Using digital mapping

As geographers in Year 3 this week we have been looking at our local area and identifying features within it.

We have used Digi Maps to identify features of the local area, we were able to independently identify the river, coast line and main roads.

Year 3 have used ordinance survey maps on the Digi Maps programme. With the use of the ordinance survey legend/ key we can now identify many features. This includes being able to pinpoint the county boundary, we could see where the Hull boundary meets the Hessle and Cottingham boundaries on the west side of the city.

Using an ordinance survey map key we could also begin to identify local features such as picnic areas, car parks and public toilets. As we looked at central Hull we could begin to identify other features such as museums, churches and art galleries. We looked closely at the symbols and began to spot them as became more familiar with using the maps.

Spanish

Year 3 have been learning to say ‘How are you?’ in Spanish.

We got to practise together as a class before we practised with our partners.

Speaking in Spanish takes careful listening to the pronunciation before trying to say it clearly to each other.

We had a conversations in pairs and had the chance to ask each other ‘How are you?’ before answering. We can answer with:

Estoy bienI am good

Estoy malI am bad

Más o menosI am okay

We tried really hard to speak clearly when answering questions.

Glockenspiel

Year 2 have spent this half term working hard to learn notes on the glockenspiel.

We began the term by understanding how to look after instruments as well as how we play them.

Year 2 discussed how a glockenspiel is a percussion instrument and how each key makes a different sound.

Year 2 are able to play several notes on the glockenspiel including the C, D, E, F and G. We used the notes we know to make simple tunes and had the opportunity of performing these each other.

When we were confident with the notes we composed our own piece of music which we again had the opportunity to perform to each other.

Observation over time

In science this week Year 1 have started our observation of a seeds grow into a plant.

We are all very excited to observe each stage of growth.

We talked about what a plant needs to be healthy and chose a place in the classroom to put our plants that had those things.

Plants need the correct temperature, light and water to grow into a healthy plant. We placed our plants near the window and decided we needed to make sure they are watered regularly.

We have placed the seeds at the side of a see through plastic cup so we can observe every stage.

Our observations so far can see a seed ready to grow. We can’t wait to see if it starts to germinate and develop shoots next week!

Life cycles

This week in PSHE Year 1 have been looking at life cycles and how things change.

We started our lesson by finding our partners. 1 partner had a baby animal and the other partner had an adult animal.

Year 1 then talked about how the baby animal they had changed to become an adult animal. We found out some just grow bigger like cows but others change completely like frogs.

We looked at what a life cycle is and put some pictures of different animals in order to create a life cycle. We looked at chickens, butterflies, frogs  and people.

Boomwhackers

In music this term Year 1 have been exploring the use of boomwhackers to make different musical sounds.

We were able to hear the different notes as each one was struck and we even made a scale from the highest to the lowest notes.

Year 1 are looking forward to playing a piece of music with the boomwhackers now we have identified their individual sounds and how to play them.
