Year 5 DT Trip To Sirius – Making Pancakes

Today, Year 5 visited Sirius Academy and worked in one of their Design and Technology cooking rooms. We watched a demonstration from one of the Sirius teachers and then began to make our own pancakes. We mesaured out our own ingridients, whisked them together, put the batter in the frying pan and then flipped our pancakes to cook the other side. Once they were ready, we added toppings, such as chocolate sauce, blueberries, strawberries and whipped cream. They were delicious! The teachers from Sirius then chose four children, who had worked incredibly hard and made super pancakes. Well done to Grace, Hennley, Alesha and Tommie, who were the winners!

In Y6 this afternoon we revisited Electricity that we learned about in Y4.

We took part in a quiz and got to grips with all the specific vocabulary – we remembered that an insulator blocks the flow of electricity and a conductor can transmit electricity.

We looked at a variety of electrical components and had a go at building circuits – we quickly remembered that the circuit needed to be continuous and could not have any breaks in it. We were able to make circuits that included bulbs, switches and buzzers!

We then matched the component to the corresponding symbol and described what its function was. We then applied our new knowledge to draw circuit diagrams using the correct symbol.

Year 5 Music – Hip Hop and Rap

This half term, Year 5 have been listening and appraising hip hop and rap music and then learning to sing the Fresh Prince of Bel Air song.

We thoroughly enjoyed learning this song, even though it was quite difficult as it is incredibly quick!

Over our past couple of history lessons, Year 5 have been examining both primary and secondary and both written and pictorial sources of evidence to come to conclusions about what happened when the Vikings raided Lindisfarne. We inferred that the Vikings travelled to Lindisfarne by boat, set fire to the church on Lindisfarne, stole valuable items from the church, attacked and killed the priests and monks and even took people as slaves. While examining the sources, we also questioned the reliability of the sources, discussing whether any of the sources were fully reliable or not and why.

We then used our inferences and our discussion to answer this question: “What can you conclude about what happened at Lindisfarne?” Here are some of our outstanding responses.

The Circus

During our PE lessons over the past 4 weeks, the children of Y5MEA have taken part in a dance unit ‘The Circus’. Within this unit, we have focused on circus acts in the 1850s.

This week, the children worked in groups to create their own routine incorporating a ringmaster. The role of the ringmaster is to introduce the acts in a circus show and guide the audience through the experience, directing their attention to the various areas of the circus, helping to link the acts together. Whilst including a ringmaster, the children also had to become different acts of the circus, including: tightrope walker, strongman, freaks, juggler and acrobats. The children confidently performed their routines, putting their skills into practice.

Y5MEA are really enjoying their PE lessons!

We are historians!

This week, Y5MEA have been historians! The children examined a range of sources of evidence linked to the Viking raids at Lindisfarne to come to conclusions about the events.

The children answered these big questions:

  • What can you conclude about what happened at Lindisfarne?
  • How reliable is each source of evidence?
  • Is it a primary or secondary source of evidence?

After examining a range of sources of evidence linked to the Viking attacks on Lindisfarne, the children created a conclusion about what they think happened during the attack.

Year 6 Project Evolve – Respecting boundaries online

Year 6 explored what the key words “consequences”, “respect” and “boundaries” mean.

We discussed a range of scenarios that made us consider if boundaries had been respected and what the consequences would be of that – positive or negative.

We then wrote our own online respect charters listing how we can show self-respect and protect ourselves online and how we can also respect others.

Year 6 PE

This term in Year 6, we have been looking at football and orienteering in PE. In orienteering, we have been warm up games such as compass shark attack and doing object coded courses. For example, in the object coded courses, we will get into teams and be given an object to touch each one of. In football, we have been looking at attacking, defending and using our team skills to discuss tactics. For example, one week we will do attacking skills, then we will do defending skills the next week. At the end of the unit, we will be competing in a tournament. Everyone is enjoying this new topic very much. Have an amazing half term.

Sincerely,

DL Team (Digital Leaders Team)

Year 6 Project Evolve – Online relationships

In year 6 we have been looking at online relationships and how to be our best selves online. We discussed how sharing things online can have both positive and negative consequences and that not all consequences are intended. Through learning about respecting others online, we were able to give ways in which we could conduct ourselves to make sure others felt respected. Boundaries were a key message in our discussion and many children were able to remember that you should respect other people’s decisions even if you don’t agree with them (I can’t play as it’s tea time. Response Ok – so don’t keep asking them etc.).

Children’s Mental Health Week

As part of Children’s Mental Health Week, Year 5 have being discussing how they have grown emotionally. We talked about how we have grown in confidence, new things that we have tried recently, fears we used to have but have now overcome and things we have achieved. We then created a growing together wall, where we recorded everything we discussed.
