Year 5 DT – Make

Year 5 have designed their breads and today we made our loaves.

We ensured we were following all the health and safety and hygiene protocols while making our dough.

We followed our designs and recipe and the finished products were fantastic.

Here are some pictures of our amazing breads.

Today, in PSHE, Year 5 drew on all their learning from the Healthy Me unit and discussed what makes a healthy lifestyle. We talked about the effects of smoking and alcohol, getting enough exercise and sleep, eating a balanced diet and having a positive relationship with food.

We then talked about what a debate is and learned that debates often have a statement or a question, which some people agree with and some people disagree with. During a debate, people give their opinions on the topic and then a vote takes place.

For the rest of the lesson we took part in a debate.

Our question was: Does the media and social media help motivate people to live healthy and safe lifestyles?

We were each given a side (either for or against) and then had some time to come up with arguments that supported our side. The groups then presented their arguments and voted whether we agreed or disagreed with the statement.

Year 5 DT – Focused Practical Task

Today, Year 5 continued their Anglo Saxon and Vikings Design and Technology unit. We began the unit with an introduction to what yeast is and how it is an essential ingredient to make bread. We then had a Year 5 Great British Bake Off where the children practiced making their own bread in a bag with the help of the teachers.

To make our bread, we mixed together: flour, sugar, water, oil, salt and yeast. We then let the bread rise for 10 minutes until the dough had risen. Finally, the children practiced moulding their dough into a shape of their choice, such as a flower, baguette, flatbread, heart, letters, twists, plait and many more exciting shapes.

Here are some images of the children’s work and the shape they decided to create for their bread!

Year 5 DT – Investigate

Today, Year 5 started their new DT project – making their own loaf of bread.

We tasted different types of bread (including a white loaf, a wholemeal seeded loaf, pitta bread, naan bread, a cheese roll, a brioche bread bun and gluten free bread.

We then filled in a table, thinking about the appearance, smell, texture and taste of each bread.

Year 5 Anglo Saxon and Viking Workshop

Today, Year 5 had a visit from Adam from Historic Workshops. Adam told us lots of stories about the Anglo Saxons and Vikings and then we took part in a range of different activities.

We tried on and held lots of different Anglo Saxon and Viking artefacts.

We used metal detectors and magnifying glasses to decide if artefacts were from the Anglo Saxon and Viking time period or another time period.

We learned about battle tactics, used shields to take part in some team games and then formed a shield wall.

We translated some runes that were etched onto a helmet into English and then decided if the helmet was Viking or Anglo Saxon.

Finally, we took part in some archery practice.

Sublime Science

To kick start science week, the whole school had a visit from Sublime Science.

All children throughout the school had the opportunity to participate in fun and interactive workshops hosted by a great scientist called Harry. He was amazing and carried out some brilliant experiments like putting a skewer through a balloon which didn’t pop!!!  He showed us how to defy gravity and swung a bucket of water around his head and it didn’t spill!

We all had such a great time and it made us want to continue learning about science! Some of us said that we would definitely be carrying out a science activity at home for our #ScienceSelfie competition!

Year 5 Sirius Science Trip

Year 5 had a brilliant afternoon at Sirius Academy West testing lots of chemicals to reveal their special colours! With this knowledge, the children also discussed how fireworks are made and which chemicals are used to create their colours.

Well done to our well deserved winners: Ethan Thomson and Hamdi Dogan! #ScienceWeek

Etching – Year 5 Art

This week in our Art lesson, year 5  enhanced their skills of ‘etching’.

Firstly, the children choose their preferred Celtic symbol from a previous art lesson, they then etched their design onto a polystyrene tile to create an imprint. After this, the children chose a choice of colour from the painting ink (they loved this bit!) and placed their tile in the painting ink. Using a roller to embed the colour, the children carefully removed their tile to reveal the etched Celtic symbol. Finally, their tiles were placed onto a page in art books, making their final print.

Here are some snapshots of the different stages of the lesson, showing how much fun the children in Y5MEA had!

Year 6 Sponsored Book Bounce

Yesterday, it was Year 6’s time on the sponsored book bounce, run by the PTA. Everyone enjoyed this time and wish it can come back again. We all loved how fun it was and all wanted another turn on there. Everyone was breathless after their turn and are grateful for the PTA bringing something as exciting as this into school for the children to enjoy.

Sincerely,

The DL Team (Digital Leaders Team)
