Art Y4 Sketching and Proportion

Inspired by the wonderful Egyptian artefacts and the magnificent sketches of Howard Carter, Year Four have been studying proportion to improve their observational skills and sketching techniques.

We studied our artefacts from a range of viewpoints and used a variety of media to record them. We combined the three images to create a beautiful Egyptian Triptych which will be gifted to our families as our annual calendar.

Some on our work has been sent to Ferens Art Gallery in Hull,

to be displayed within the Junior Open Exhibition which we are incredibly excited and proud about!

Take a peek at this link for a virtual tour, can you spot our Triptychs?

Y3 Cave Art

As Artists in Y3 today, the children enjoyed creating their own cave art images of some  wonderous and magnificent creatures.  Pastels, charcoal and chalks were utilised and blended to create various muted tones so as to replicate the colour schemes found in some of the images we explored from the Stone Age era.  Everyone enjoyed the activity and were very proud of their creations!

Here are some of our artists at work…

Here are a few of our completed creations…

A super start to our learning in 2022!

Light

Year 3 began this unit by thinking about the question ‘what is light?’. They looked at a variety of objects/images to determine what a light source is. Some of the objects that we needed to have more in depth discussions about were; the moon, windows, reflective clothing and mirrors.

We decided on the following: a light  source is something that gives out light.

A mirror is not a light source because it does not give out light – it reflects light. A window is not a light source because it does not give out light – it allows light to pass through. The moon is not a light source because it does not give out light  – it reflects the sun’s light.

We continued by investigating the reflective properties of different materials in order to design a school rucksack.

Look at these fabulous designs:

We continued by looking at different types of mirrors. The convex and concave mirrors were very surprising!

We also studied the way that shadows change in relation to the time of day and distance from the light source.

We found out about a famous scientist from history – Justus Von Liebig who invented the mirror.

Science – Physics – Y4 – Electricity

So now that we can create and fix a simple circuit, we were challenged with creating a switch to turn the bulb or buzzer on and off.

We need a switch within the light-boxes that we are creating for DT, so it was important that we figured this out and really understood how the switch worked!

Why is it important to be safe online?

by Parker and Oliver

It is important to be safe online because there are chances of leaking your personal information all over the internet if you are not careful. This is why people have to be very careful when choosing passwords or what to say if you were on something like voice chat. People have to remember that not all people are who they say they are online and to keep safe you have to keep your identity concealed and always think before you do something.

Tell a trusted adult or guardian if something happened online as they will most likely know what to do in a tricky situation. As digital leaders, we believe that you should never reveal anything about yourself.

Y4 Language Angels…Como estas?

As linguists, Y4 are enjoying learning Spanish at present. We undertook a little intercultural understanding of our new language in terms of the countries where Spanish is predominantly spoken, the traditional dress worn in cultural celebrations as well as the lovely Mediterranean foods that are eaten.

We also found a few commonalities with some of the words and phrases we have learnt  so far with those we have learnt in our prior learning of French. Watch our video clip to see how we are doing!

Como estas? How are you?

Estoy bien.  I’m good.

Estoy mal.  I’m not too good

Mas o menos.   So, so!

Beware Malware in Y4

We start our computing lessons by revisiting the SMART rules.

Today in computing, we have been learning about malware, which is designed to gain unauthorised access to our hardware through software, and phishing, when you receive emails from people pretending to be a company.

We had a class discussion about how often we install apps on our phones and tablets without really knowing where they are from and who has made them.

We completed an activity where we all received a fake spam email and had to respond appropriately. Some emails had attachments, some email promised money and some were just strange! We discussed that if something sounds to good to be true or is making huge promises, it is usually a scam and we should report to our teacher!

As Theologists, Y4 have been gaining a further insight into the weekend rituals and traditions of members of the Jewish faith community and comparing them with their own.

The children firstly identified the traditional activities and rituals which commonly occur in one of their own typical weekend breaks. From lazy lie-ins, watching television, shopping, accessing the internet to undertake various activities, movie nights, visiting family, enjoying an occasional take-away to football, gymnastic and martial arts practice…the children certainly keep themselves busy and entertained.

We then compared our typical weekend activities with  those of a Jewish family. We explored the traditional weekly family celebration of Shabbat which takes place every weekend and begins on a Friday evening at sunset and lasts until sunset on a Saturday evening (25 hours).

The children firstly found the inability to use anything electronic unimaginable but understood that the rituals and traditions of Shabbat in the Jewish faith community, which are recorded in the  Jewish Torah as an agreement with God, allowed for some quality rest and family time to be spent together on the Jewish Sabbath day (Saturday)…something we all agreed was well worth forgoing the use of our electronic devices and the internet for!

White Ribbon Day 2021

In Y4, the children have been working collaboratively to identify the qualities which they believe are necessary to form and maintain positive relationships.

As you can see, we shared our opinions and agreed that many qualities are required to ensure that relationships between friends, parents, carers, teachers and people in our wider community not only work but remain positive.

We then proudly signed our pledge to ensure that only kind words, kind thoughts and kind actions are used towards one another in all the relationships we are a part of now and in the future.

Remembrance Day

As Theologists, the children in Year 3 have been learning about the significance of Remembrance Day and the importance of remembering this special event. We visited the Cenotaph at the All Saints Church in Hessle, where we laid a poppy wreath and held a 2 minute silence to pay our respects for the sacrifices made by individuals during the wars of the past, as well as for those who endeavour to maintain peace in our world today.

Back at school, the children worked collaboratively to identify why we should remember Remembrance Day by sharing their views and opinions before creating their own group mind- maps…

We then shared our own reasons as to why we should never forget the important events of the past which Remembrance Day commemorates…

We also discovered that whilst we wear a red poppy as a symbol of respect for all individuals who have sacrificed their lives to fight and assist in the wars of the past, as well as for those who continue to maintain peace today,  that there is also a  purple poppy which is a symbol of respect for the animals which have played a significant part in major conflicts around the world and a white poppy to symbolise peace.
