KS1 Girls Football Festival

Today, 8 of our KS1 girls have attended a fabulous football festival at the Tigers Trust Arena. The festival was organised by the FA with the aim of getting more girls interested in football. The girls took part in a range of activities all themed around the Disney film ‘Frozen’.
The girls had a fantastic time and were a credit to the school. Well done!

Y2’s Art Workshop

Year 2 had a workshop with local artist Charlotte Eldred last week. In Art this term Year 2 are focusing on portraits. During the workshop with Charlotte they improved their doodling skills and created different portraits using a doodling style.

Here are some of Charlotte’s examples:

Here the children are completing their art work:

HOW ARE SACRED TEXTS TREATED?

First the children looked at books that are special to them and identified their favourite stories. Next we discussed the messages these books can teach us.

Then we discussed why religious books are sacred. The children learnt that the word sacred means something is special and connected to God. We looked at the story of ‘The loaves and fishes’ from the Bible. We then looked at the story ‘The milk and the jasmine flower’ from the Gurdwara. We compared the messages that both of these books convey. The final story we read was ‘Noah’s Ark’ which appears in many sacred texts across different religions.

Lastly, the children had a discussion about why music is important to worship. We then listened to music from the Sikh Religion. The children concluded that songs tell stories and music makes us happy.

Year 1 – RE

In Year 1 this week, we were thinking about ‘what makes a place special?’

We first had a class discussion and we shard ideas about:-

What makes a place special?

Have you got a special place?

Where is it?

Why is it special?

The children suggested many places, such as their garden, park, bedroom, school, soft play, Nanie/Grandpa’s house an also places like football/rugby stadium, rainbow/beavers and places of sports/clubs.

We decided places were special because they were:-

safe, fun, calm, happy, relaxing and filled us with happy memories.

Any place can be special, it’s about how it makes you feel.

Year 1 – Computing

This week Year 1 were introduced to the Bee-Bots.

Bee-Bots are robots that need commands to make them move.

We spent time linking outcomes to each button.

The commands we learnt were:- forwards, backwards, turn, clear and go.

Nativity

All of the staff were so proud of the children who took part in the Nativity this year. They worked really hard to learn their lines, sing the songs and come on and off the stage the right times. The children also learnt more about the story of the first Christmas and what Christians believe happened at that time.

Here are some of the photos we got of the children.

YEAR 1 – RE

Year 1 have continued to look at promises, but this time in the form of religious promises.

We looked at two different Christian services where promises are made.

First, we looked at a christening  a christening is when a baby is welcomed into the Christian faith. The baby’s parents and friends all go to a church service.  Godparents are friends or family chosen by the baby’s parents. They make a promise to help the baby learn more about being a Christian.

Sometimes in a christening, the vicar will dip their hand in some oil. They will then move their hand in the shape of a cross over the baby’s head – a cross is special to Christians as they believe Jesus died on the cross.

The children enjoyed acting out this service, they understood that this is a special and important act, as belonging to a faith gives members a sense of identity.

Next, we looked at a wedding – they take place in a church, where the bride and the groom say vows in front of God and their guests.  Vows are promises which they make to each other, they then exchange rings which show their eternal love.

Lots of the children had been to weddings and were able to share their knowledge of this special service.

Art exhibition

We are so proud to have held our first Christopher Pickering Art Exhibition.

The whole school spent several weeks in preperation practising our art skills using different medias and exploring different artists work in order to create our art work. Some of us used collage, some used oil pastels, colour washing, paint, pencil and marker pens to name just some of the media in our final masterpieces. We drew on all the rt skills we have developed so far to help us create our fantastic art work and combined this with the influence of different artists including Tracey Savage, Van Gough, Paul Klee and Kandinsky.

We were all very proud when had the opportunity to visit the gallery and see our work displayed in frames and named just like true artists.

We hope that everybody who had chance to visit the gallery had a lovely time.

Year 1 Hessle Square trip!

Year 1 enjoyed visiting Hessle Square today as part of their current topic ‘My Local Area‘.

The children have been learning all about their local area over the last term, and in history lessons they have been exploring how it has changed over the years.

The children travelled to Hessle Square in small groups and had several images of what the area used to look like. The children were able to identify key landmarks such as the church and some of the shops such as Innes as places which had remained the same since the 60’s (however some eagle eyed children were quick to point out that Innes was much bigger now than it was back then).

They also identified many things that had changed over the years such as supermarkets, zebra crossings and the bus stops.

It was a lovely day and some of the local shopkeepers even came out to talk to the children about how their businesses had changed over the years.

YEAR 1 -COMPUTING

How can we paint using computers?

Now we are all confident at using laptops, this term we will be investigating how we can paint and replicate some famous artists techniques using http://paintz.app

This week, our task was to create a self-portrait. We had the opportunity to examine our prior knowledge and spend time exploring for what the different freehand tools do in the painting program, so that we could add individual creativity to our work.

The children worked in pairs, enabling shared experiences and modelling to their partner what the different tools in the painting program can do.

We were all able to talk about which tools we used in our paintings, which were easiest/hardest to use and which we liked best…the spray can tool was very popular!

We all succeeded in creating some wonderful pieces of artwork using our laptops.
