Y1 – ICT

Year 1 have been working on developing their trackpad skills.

We now understand the main components of a computer – screen, keyboard, mouse, trackpad – so we looked at different mice and how some look different but all perform the same function, such as the trackpad.

All of the children were able to switch on their laptop and find the artist app that we were going to use – with a little help of course.

We explored the tool bar, finding out that as well as changing colours, we could make shapesfill with colour and use a spray paint effect.

At first, some found it a bit tricky to select different tools and using the trackpads to draw … but all of the children showed determination and perseverance, and were able to produce some fabulous work.

60’s WOW day

Year 1 stepped back in time into the 1960’s today as part of our topic: My local area.

We started our day by exploring how life has changed within living memory, looking at how furniture, electrical equipment, music, fashion and education has evolved since the 1960’s..

The children loved looking at the household electrical equipment and were shocked to find out that the television only had 3 channels in the 1960’s and that there wasn’t any internet!

The children then spent some time drawing some of the objects/equipment that we had looked at and wrote down some of the facts they had learnt about it.

We then had a circle time and the children shared some photographs that they had brought in of their grandparents back in the 60’s. It was lovely to share special memories of our loved ones.

We discussed how the buildings and cars had changed over time and how the population had grown and we are looking forward to investigating this further!

We ended the day by learning some 1960’s dance moves which we then showcased to each other in groups. Overall it was a fantastic day and the children loved experiencing what life was like back in the ‘swinging sixties’.

WHY ARE ANIMALS GROUPED IN DIFFERENT WAYS?

In Science this week, Year 1 have continued to look at animals (including humans). This week our enquiry was ‘Why are animals grouped in different ways?’

First of all we looked at the ways we could group different animals as a class.

The children were each given an animal to compare and contrast. The children looked closely at the features of the animals and then grouped them together based on their characteristics.

Here is what some of the children discovered:

“Those animals all have wings and feathers so they must all be birds.”

“They all have hair or fur so they must be mammals.”

The children then had a go at sorting the different animals independently.

Year 1 – RE

Last week, Y1 looked at what the word belonging means.

We discovered that we might belong to schools, families and groups…some of us belong to different clubs, but we all belong to Christopher Pickering Primary School.

This week we looked at different faiths that people can belong to… Christian, Muslim and Sikh and we looked at the symbols that represent them.  We found out that different faiths all have different places of worship and different Gods that they pray to.

We discussed the Christian church, Skyla goes to church with her family on a Sunday and they “sing songs and pray”, Matilda knew that “Jesus died on a cross”, and Forrest remembered that “he came back to life a couple of days later”.

Ivan was able to share with us that he is a Muslim, “my family are all Muslims too”.

We looked at different places of worship, the children thought the Muslim mosque  looked very fancy, some recognised a Christian Church and we discovered that Sikhs worshiped at a Gurdwara.

We spoke about praying, Thomas knew that “Mrs. Marson says a prayer at the end of assembly, we put our hands together and close our eyes”.

We also looked at clothing that different faiths wear, learning that Sikh boys cover their heads with a Romala and that Muslim girls wear a Hijab.

We looked at the similarities and differences between different faiths. The children discovered that both Christian and Sikh children have places of worship where they can go to pray to their own God.

People may have different beliefs and Gods that they worship, we may wear different clothes and pray in different ways in different places, but everyone is special.

Why do I have senses?

To explore our 5 senses we explored each one carefully. We first started with touch.

The children first discussed that we use our hands to tell if something is soft, rough, smooth etc. To explore this we passed round different objects.

I then asked the question “Can we only feel with our hands?”. A lot of the children first agreed and said yes. Then we discovered that you can still tell if something is soft/rough if it touches your skin on your arm/leg.

Smell

We then explored our sense of smell. The children could identify that we use our nose to smell.

We smelled vinegar which some children said was disgusting but most children loved the smell of the room air freshener.

Taste

Next it was time to explore taste. We tasted salt and sugar first with our eyes open. We talked about how clever our tongue is and how everybody likes different things because of our taste buds. We then did a comparative test to see if we closed our eyes, do our taste buds grow stronger? Some children agreed it did, but some said it tasted the same.

Sight

The fourth sense we investigated was sight. We discussed how some people may need help with their vision and that is why people might wear glasses. The children in the class were very excited to show off their glasses to the class.

Hearing

The final sense we explored was hearing. The children knew we used our ears to hear and that just like sight, some people may need extra help so that they can hear. We discussed all the different things we use in school that we listen and respond to everyday!

Y1 – RE

Year 1 have been thinking about what the word belonging means.

We might belong to schools, families and groups, such and swimming, rugby or Rainbows.  We looked at the different symbols that represent these…some of us belong to different clubs, but we all belong to Christopher Pickering Primary School.

Thomas said “at football we all have the same Tigers badge because we belong to that club”.

We found out that belonging is “a feeling of safety, support, acceptance and inclusion at being a member of a group”.

All of the children agreed that belonging to a group made them feel special and happy.

Y1 – Music

In Music this week, Y1 listened to ‘Hey You!’.

The children used their listening skills to find the ‘pulse’ of the song. Then they first clapped along and then sang. They all listened to see what instruments they could hear, identified the intro, verse, chorus and hook and they learnt that the style of music was ‘old school hip hop’.  All of the class loved this style of music, Penny said it “made her body move” and Ivan thought it sounded “funky”.

The children were all excited to play the glockenspiel along to the music, carefully following the beat.

Y1 – PE

This term, Y1 are focussing on Playing Games and Running.

We have already learnt techniques about running safely and effectively, changing directions, listening to instructions and following rules of the game.

This week in our running game, we had runners and defenders, the aim of the game was for the runners to collect the objects while avoiding the defenders … it was wonderful to see the great team work that was shown by all the children.

Y1 – ICT

Year 1 were excited to start their ICT lessons this week, especially the thought of getting their hands on the laptops… but first we had to find out what exactly ‘Technology’ is.

We found out the word ‘technology’ actually means ‘anything made by people to help us’.

The children then searched our classroom to find items of technology. The children were able to find many things and say how they help us…

Poppy told us that “glasses help us to see better”, while River said “my bottle has my water in it for me to drink and stay healthy” and all the children were surprised when Avie said the chair was technology as it helps us to sit down!

Technology is absolutely everywhere in our classroom, so we had to go outside to find things that aren’t technology… trees and the sky aren’t technology as they are not made by people.

What are bodies and what can they do?

Our first lesson of the unit is ‘animals including humans’ and we focused on the enquiry ‘What are bodies and what can they do?’.

To start our lesson we sang the song ‘head, shoulders, knees and toes‘.

We then drew round around Elijah and Reuben so we could then label human body parts. We had lots of fun!

Here are what some of the children said:

“We have a heart to pump blood around our body“- Mylie

“We have eyes so we can see“- Isabel

“We have a skeleton which is made of bones to make sure we can stand up and don’t fall over like jelly ”- Myles

“Our skin keeps protects everything in our body from falling out” Matilda

We then continued our learning through our continuous provision. We made and labelled the human body for our science working wall.
