Art exhibition

We are so proud to have held our first Christopher Pickering Art Exhibition.

The whole school spent several weeks in preperation practising our art skills using different medias and exploring different artists work in order to create our art work. Some of us used collage, some used oil pastels, colour washing, paint, pencil and marker pens to name just some of the media in our final masterpieces. We drew on all the rt skills we have developed so far to help us create our fantastic art work and combined this with the influence of different artists including Tracey Savage, Van Gough, Paul Klee and Kandinsky.

We were all very proud when had the opportunity to visit the gallery and see our work displayed in frames and named just like true artists.

We hope that everybody who had chance to visit the gallery had a lovely time.

Year 1 Hessle Square trip!

Year 1 enjoyed visiting Hessle Square today as part of their current topic ‘My Local Area‘.

The children have been learning all about their local area over the last term, and in history lessons they have been exploring how it has changed over the years.

The children travelled to Hessle Square in small groups and had several images of what the area used to look like. The children were able to identify key landmarks such as the church and some of the shops such as Innes as places which had remained the same since the 60’s (however some eagle eyed children were quick to point out that Innes was much bigger now than it was back then).

They also identified many things that had changed over the years such as supermarkets, zebra crossings and the bus stops.

It was a lovely day and some of the local shopkeepers even came out to talk to the children about how their businesses had changed over the years.

YEAR 1 -COMPUTING

How can we paint using computers?

Now we are all confident at using laptops, this term we will be investigating how we can paint and replicate some famous artists techniques using http://paintz.app

This week, our task was to create a self-portrait. We had the opportunity to examine our prior knowledge and spend time exploring for what the different freehand tools do in the painting program, so that we could add individual creativity to our work.

The children worked in pairs, enabling shared experiences and modelling to their partner what the different tools in the painting program can do.

We were all able to talk about which tools we used in our paintings, which were easiest/hardest to use and which we liked best…the spray can tool was very popular!

We all succeeded in creating some wonderful pieces of artwork using our laptops.

YEAR 1 – Computing

This week our focus was following the rules we talked about last week, which were:-

Hold your device carefully

Stop using your device when someone is talking to you

Only use the apps you’re asked to

Take turns with your partner

The children worked in pairs on the app https://ncc.io/drag to complete puzzles and mazes, using their trackpad skills.

They were able to follow all the rules and all really enjoyed working together with their partners, as they were able to help and share each others successes.

YEAR 1 – RE

This week we have been looking at promises.

First, we learned that a promise is an agreement to do or not do something.

The children spoke about some promises they had made.  Some said they had made ‘pinkie promises’ to their friends and parents, and some said they had made promises at their Beaver and Rainbow groups.

Then we read  ‘Abraham and Sarah’ which is a story from the bible. It tells of how God made Abraham a promise. He promised to give Sarah and Abraham a child and many descendants if they moved from where they were living to a new land.  They did, and they had a son called Isaac. God kept his promise to them, proving he was dependable and faithful.

Finally, the children made their own promise vouchers.

Ronnie promised to always share.

Bella promised to always do her homework.

Savannah promised to never chat back to grown-ups.

Chester promised to sleep in his bed all night.

Albie promised to never touch the ball when his coach is talking.

All the children thought carefully about their promises and they understood the importance of keeping them.

What do animals (including humans) eat?

This week the children were introduced to the scientific vocabulary Carnivore, Herbivore and Omnivore.

Once we were familiar with these terms it was time to delve deeper into why different animals might have different diets. We looked at wild animals and discussed why they might only eat meat such as lions and wolves. We also looked at their features and here is what the children discovered:

“Snails are herbivores as they can’t eat meat…they don’t have sharp teeth to rip it a part!”

“Lions live in the wild so they eat other animals to stay alive. This means they are carnivores.”

The children then got given a set of animals with pictures of what they eat on them. The children then grouped the animals by drawing and labelling them.

Year 1 – RE

This week we have been looking at values.

We learned that values are group of things that are important – such as honesty, good manners, kindness, determination.

I reminded the children of our school’s RESPECT values:-

Resilient, Enthusiastic, Safe, Perseverance, Empathetic, Confident and Tolerant.                We discussed the meaning of each of these values.

We discovered that many values come from holy books, like the bible, which Christians and Jews believe in, and that it is a sacred text.

Last week we listened to the 10 Commandments last week and this week we listened to the story of The Good Samaritan. Both of these are stories from the bible.

The children were ‘shocked’ and ‘sad’ that people left the man at first.  We shared our thoughts on what we would do if we saw someone we didn’t know, hurt and in need of help – Mason said “I would give my coat to keep them warm”, Jessica said “you could call for an ambulance” and Harley said “you should always help any people if they’re hurt”.

The learning we took from this lesson was, that although people may have different beliefs and different gods, places of worship and bibles – we should all share the same values and be kind to everyone regardless.

Year 1 – Computing

This week our focus was about using computers safely in our school setting.

First, we looked at why we have rules in school and how those rules help us.

After some discussion, we found at that rules enable us:-

To stay safe

To make sure we are all happy

So that we can learn

To help us to be good people

Next, we looked at how we can apply this understanding to rules needed for using computer technology safely. Our 4 main rules in Year 1 are:-

Hold your device carefully

Stop using your device when someone is talking to you

Take turns with your partner

Only use the apps you’ve been asked to use

Finally, we recapped on all we had learned during our technology lessons.

We know that technology is something that has been made to help others, that we have different types of computer technology, that we can name the different parts of computers and that we have used a mouse and keyboard to draw pictures and write words.

Year 1’s 1960’s WOW day

Year 1 stepped back in time into the 1960’s today as part of our topic: My local area.

We started our day by exploring how life has changed within living memory, looking at how furniture, electrical equipment, music, fashion and education has evolved since the 1960’s..

The children loved looking at the household electrical equipment and were shocked to find out that the television only had 3 channels in the 1960’s and that there wasn’t any internet!

The children then spent some time drawing some of the objects/equipment that we had looked at and wrote down some of the facts they had learnt about it.We then had a circle time and the children shared some photographs that they had brought in of their grandparents back in the 60’s. It was lovely to share special memories of our loved ones, some of which were of family trips to Hull fair or the seaside and some very glamorous nights out with friends.

In the afternoon we learnt all about how our local area has changed over the decades. We looked at artifacts and photographs of Hull and Hessle Square, and the children were able to identify what had changed and what had remained the same. We discussed how the buildings and cars had changed over time and how the population had grown and we are looking forward to visiting Hessle Square in the near future to investigate further!

We ended the day by learning some 1960’s dance moves which we then showcased to each other in groups. Overall it was a fantastic day and the children loved experiencing what life was like back in the ‘swinging sixties’.

Why are animals grouped in different ways?

In Science this week Year 1 have continued to look at animals (including humans). This week our enquiry was ‘Why are animals grouped in different ways?’

The children got into partners and were each given an animal to compare and contrast. The children looked closely at the features of the animals and then grouped them together based on their characteristics. Here is what some of the children discovered:

“Those animals and have wings and feathers so they must all be birds.”

“They can all lay eggs and have scales so they can be grouped together.”
