This week in music Year 1 have been singing the nursery rhyme ‘London’s Burning’.
We found out the song is about the great fire of London from 1666.
We have found singing in rounds very hard but enjoyed playing about with this song.
We sang in an echo because we noticed each line of the song repeated itself like and echo in a tunnel.
We also had fun making new lyrics up. We made our own verse.
“Hull is calling, Hull is calling
See the Humber bridge, see the Humber bridge
Go to town, go to town”
In Year 1 we have been appraising nursery rhymes with a focus on where they originated from. Last week we looked at the song ‘Hot Cross Buns’. We discovered the song was more than 300 years old and was used by bakers to help sell their delicious buns. We performed our song in a round. At first we found this extremely tricky as we would sing each other’s parts. As a result, for this week Miss Dale sang one part and the children sang the other. Here was the final outcome.
This week we were determined to keep practicing singing in a round. We appraised another traditional nursery rhyme ‘Row, row, row your boat’. We then looked at more additions to the song that have been invented over the years. We agreed our favourite was the crocodile one so we decided to perform this in a round and WE DID IT! So proud Year 1, well done!
In music this week, Year 1 have been looking at the nursery rhyme ‘The Wheels on the Bus‘.
We found out the song was first published in 1939.
We listened to different versions and talked about the verses we knew.
The nursery rhyme has changed lots over time with new verse added. We talked about how the ‘the blinkers on the bus’ would not have been in the original version as busses did not have indicators then and when we looked at pictures of an old bus we decided ‘the wipers on bus’ would have been added as well because we could not see any wipers on the bus.
We had a go at thinking of our own verse to add to the song. We composed our own verses to sing.
Year 1 liked composing verses about their pets as sometimes animals go the bus. We thought of bunnies, cats and dogs.

We listened to various versions of ‘The Wheels on the Bus’, before creating our own.
We researched the song and found out it was published in 1939 as a way to keep children entertained on a bus. Our little Hubbers were very keen to compose their own.
We had lots of fun discussing and creating our own Hub version. Ideas included ‘The wheels on the aeroplane’, ‘the wheels on the lorry’ and the ‘wheels on the tractor’.
We decided on ‘The Wheels on the Tractor.
We created a PowerPoint of our version as we were a little shy to perform our song.
The wheels on the tractor go mummm, mummm, mummm,…………all day long.
The engine on the tractor goes putt, putt, putt………….all day long.
The dog on the tractor goes woof woof woof ………. all day long.
The cow on the tractor goes moo, moo, moo………..all day long.
The farmer on the tractor works, works, works……….all day long.
This week in year 1 during our music lesson we got the chance to talk about our favourite nursery rhymes.
We know lots of nursery rhymes, some of our favourites are ‘Ba ba black sheep’, ‘Twinkle twinkle little star’, ‘Wind the bobbin up’ and ‘Humpty Dumpty’ to name a few.
We had the chance to listen to lots of nursery rhymes and we appraised the music in them. We liked how the music in the nursery rhymes was ‘soft‘ and ‘gentle‘ and our voices were soft and gentle too to match the music.
We really enjoyed performing our favourite nursery rhymes and can’t wait for our next music lesson!
Year 6 have been learning Silent Night on the recorder in their music lessons this half term!
We revisited the notes we learned in Year 5 and learned how to play some new ones including Low C, High C and F#. We built on our existing knowledge of how to read music by looking at how time signatures affect how music is played.
We have enjoyed being musicians and performing what we have learned.
Year 1 have loved listening to, appraising, and performing the song ‘Hey you!’ by Joanna Mangona. We have been especially good at finding the pulse of this song, remembering it is like a heartbeat. Here is our final performance using BSL for our actions.
Today, our Year 2 children performed their Christmas readings and carols at St Nicholas Church.
The children sang and spoke beautifully and enjoyed performing in front of our audience.

For the past few weeks, Year 5 have been learning to play the recorder. We have learned to play notes, such as B, A, G and E, and learned to play different songs using all the notes we have learned. We have really enjoyed learning this instrument!
