Mandarin singing

This week, for our new music unit, Year 3 have been learning to sing in Mandarin.

We begun by harmonising with notes being played on the keyboard.

Once we had harmonised we learnt some words in Mandarin.

Once we knew these words we put them to the harmonies and added actions.

In our music lesson we also discovered lots of information about the Chinese culture. We were all very excited to find out lots about Chinese New Year. This year is the year of the rabbit. Lulu told us about how her and her family would be celebrating and the types of food they would be eating. We found out that lots of Chinese families eat dumplings as these are made together as a family.

We can’t wait for our next music lesson.

Year 5 Music codebreakers

In todays lesson year 5’s really enjoyed looking at the music notes and breaking the codes using letter notations to find words. The children really loved refreshing their memory on how to read the treble base notes using the acronyms FACE for the SPACE and Every Good Boy Deserves Foottball when looking at notes on a line.

Blast off!

Over the year so far, Year 5 have been extremely lucky to be taught to play the clarinet by Mrs Hall. This week, the children were learning to play a piece called Blast Off. We ended the performance by raising out clarinets to the music. We are doing amazingly!!!

Christmas Carol Concert

A huge well done to all of the children who took part in the Christmas Carol Concert.

After months of hard work, the choir were able to perform in front of their parents, as well as some of the ladies from the local residential home.

There was singing, solo performances and even some children playing the recorder.

It was a lovely afternoon which the the audience thoroughly enjoyed.

A big thank you to the PTA for helping out with refreshments and to the staff to helped out too.

We can’t wait to see them singing again soon.

Carol Service

To finish the Autumn Term, Year 2 have taken part in a Christmas service.

We have spent time over the term learning carols to sing. We have appraised and listened to the music, tune and words. We have talked about how calming some carols are such as Away in a Manger and how soft these songs are. The music is slow and gentle and it made us feel relaxed.

We practised these songs before we performed to an audience.

As part of our Christmas Service we also re-told the story of Mary and Joseph and their journey to Bethlehem for Jesus’ birth.

We each told a piece of the story to recount how Gabriel had appeared to Mary before Their Journey to Bethlehem and how the Shepherds and Wise Men followed a star to find a stable with Jesus.

We were very excited as we had a special visitor to watch our performance. The Vicar from St Nicholas Church came to watch us and led us in prayer to remember Jesus.

Year 5 Clarinet Long note song

The children were introduced to the note A today through the song ‘ solid sound. The children really loved playing between the notes A and G and getting the correct rhythm and really created a lovely composition.

Y3 Autumn Recorders – Final Piece

Over the course of this term in Y3, the children have not only been learning how to play a new instrument – the recorder – but have also been learning how to read music.

On the recorder we have been practising every week how to hold it correctly, which we will carry on embedding, and how to play the notes; B, A, G, C, D. We have been learning that different notes mean different things and therefore we have to play the note longer or shorter. We have learned that a minim is worth 2 beats, a crotchet is worth 1 and a quaver is worth 1/2 a beat.

We have learned lots of different songs but our favourite was the first part of Jingle Bells and some of the children played it at the Christmas Carol Concert.

Now that we are familiar with the very basics we will continue practising how to play the recorder in our music lessons.

Throughout the Autumn term year 4 have been learning how to play the recorder. We began learning the single note B and progressed to be able to play a complete tune. After lots of practice we are now able to read and play the notes B, A, G, E, D, F and C on the recorder. We then began to practice a playing a tune on the recorder and finally performed the notes we had learnt in a tune as part of a team. Well done year 4!

First time performing on the recorder.

Final performance! Superb work!

Learning songs for our nativity!

Year 1 have really enjoyed rehearsing songs for their nativity this half term. They have worked really hard to learn each new song and the corresponding actions. Some of the children were confident enough to sing solo! It was a joy to see the songs they have worked so hard on being performed in front of an audience for parents and carers.

Silent Night

This week in music Year 2 are continuing to appraise the songs we are going to perform in our Christmas service.

This week we have appraised ‘Silent Night‘. We liked this song as it was slow and made us all feel relaxed.

The notes were very long and we talked about how we need to fill our lungs with air to hold the long  notes when we perform.

We listened to different versions of the song and talked about the different instruments we could hear. We identified a guitar and violin on one version but could only hear the piano on another. We liked the sound of the violin as this was gentle and soft.
