Y4 PE Invasion Games – Hockey

This week we were developing our passing skills. We could talk about long and short passes and when these could be used effectively. We knew that shorter passes may help us to retain possession and better control over the ball.

We then applied these passing skills to play mini games and to score within the endzones! The scores were high this week as we were counting in multiples of nine!

PE Scholarship: Tri-Golf!

For the last two weeks, our scholarship group have been trying the fun, but technically tricky sport of Tri-Golf. In the first week children got to grip with the putters and chippers by practising their swings on different surfaces and experimenting with feet positions and stances to see what happened to the resulting putt or chip. Children then had a go at several different Tri-Golf festival games where they had to complete different challenges to score points. After trying this game mode out and seeing the types of equipment used, children then had an opportunity to create their own games for others to play. There were some fantastic challenges created!

Week 2 saw our scholarship group (plus some Y4s for good measure) put when they had learned into practice at the Hull Active Schools Tri-Golf Championships. This was timed competition where children competed in teams of ten, five boys and five girls, across ten different golf challenges, They had five minutes per station to score as many points as they can. When the results came in, our children were very please! In the 3/4 competition, out Y4 team came 3rd and in the Y5/6  competition, our Y5 team came 2nd and our Y6 team came first! These incredible results saw all children receive a medal and also qualify for the Active Humber county finals in June. A huge well done children!

Week 1: Comparing surfaces on a chipping challenge.

Week 1: Competing in their own festival activities.

Y5 taking on a putting challenge at the HAS competition.

Tri-Golf is fantastic for keeping fit as it requires constant running back and forth in order to have lots of goes in the allowed time. Children found it to be very tiring!

Y6 Team First Place (L-R): Harley, Archie, Alex, Freddie, Lucas, Phoebe, Sapphire, Tuloula, Grace & Charlotte

Year 5 Second Place (L-R): Charnley, Jack, Ewan, Ethan, Evie, Lola, Issy & Harrie

Year 4 Third Place (L-R): George, Kian, Arthur, Bailey, Elsa, Lillie, Elissa, Lily and Lily-Mae

Thanks HAS for a fantastic afternoon! Our children were all happy to leave with a medal!

Design and Technology Y4 Textiles

The designers in Y4 were tasked with creating a purse that was strong enough to carry coins. influenced by our study of the Romans we went on to investigate a variety of purses and wallets to determine their qualities.

During our  Focused Practical Tasks, we learned how to sew materials together using a variety of stitches. The pupils evaluated the stitches that they had practised to help them decide which method they would use in their design.

.

Although some stitches were challenging, our teachers were very proud of the resilience that we demonstrated whilst learning these new skills.

.

We used paper templates to help us gauge the size of our design, where the folds, stitches and attachments would go.

We worked with patience and pride. We applied our new skills and some of excelled and were able to help our peers!

After we had posed for these photographs where we proudly displayed our finished purses and wallets, we considered what we would change if we were to do it again. We evaluated our methods, skills and finished outcome as we always strive to be the best that we can be!

. .

As scientists this week, Year 1 have been carrying out comparative tests to identify which materials are the most suitable to make a waterproof hat for Barney the Bear.

We begun by discussing which materials we though would be waterproof. Lots of us though tin foil, plastic and wood were going to not let water through them.

We recorded our predictions on a table before we carried out a fair test.

First we put Barney in a bowl, then we held materials above his head and put water on them with a pipette. We observed what happened to the water once it was on the material. Some materials soaked up the water and we knew this meant they weren’t waterproof. Other materials just made the water run off and we knew these were waterproof.

Lots of us were surprised that the wood was not waterproof. the water soaked in to the wood.

We observed very closely how the water soaked into the material and paper and how the water just sat in a puddle on top of the metal, plastic and tin foil.

We decided that Barneys hat should be made of plastic as this was the softest of the waterproof materials. We though wood would be too heavy and the tin foil would be very noisy in the rain.

Year 4 Writing Music

As Musicians this term, the children in Year 4 are following the musical line of enguiry of writing music. Using the letters A, B, C, D, E, F and G, our first lesson comprised of creating a list of words before playing their composed musical notation on the glockenspiels.  We drew upon our prior knowledge of learning of pitch and played the words we had created on different keys before deciding which we liked best.

Here are a few of our first compositions….

We then played and practised our words with a partner and gave constructive feedback to one another…

Some children then volunteered to play a solo of their favourite compositions…

Y3/4 Jigsaw: Dreams and Goals

In Y3/4 this term, we have been following our Jigsaw unit of ‘Dreams and Goals’ in which we have listened to some inspiring stories of people who showed great determination to achieve their own dreams and ambitions.

Year 3 listened to the story ‘Me Jane’ by Patrick McDonnell which is the story of Jane Goodhall  and her lifelong dream to work with animals from a young age. Upon listening to this wonderful story, the children identified that if you believe in yourself and remain determined that your dreams really can come true.

Here are some of the Y3 childrens future dreams and ambitions…

Click on the story below to here the story ‘Me Jane’ which is read by Jane Goodhall herself:

‘Salt in his shoes: Michael Jordan in Pursuit of a Dream’ by Delores Jordan was the inspirational story of perseverance, belief and determination of the famous Basketball player Michael Jordan, which inspired the Y4 children to identify both their Hopes for 2022 as well as their Dreams for the future.

Click on the story below to listen to the true story of how the young Michael Jordan overcome his earlier challenges to achieve his dream of becoming a famous American Basketball player.

As you can see, our children in Y3/4 certainly have amazing hopes, dreams and ambitions which are all achievable!

Safer Internet Day

For Safer Internet Day in Y4, we explored the importance of being respectful to others whilst being online and how to recognise healthy and unhealthy online behaviours including ways to deal with any problems should they arise.

The children shared ways in which they often utilise the internet (Purple Mash, TT Rockstars, Lexia, email, research, gaming, accessing social media platforms, YouTube etc) then shared some of the exciting online games they often play. This led to the discussion on how we need to be both respectful and kind to others we may interact with whilst online and to  recognise behaviours which may cause alarm or distress. From this, the children shared their knowledge on what they should do if they were faced with any unhealthy online behaviours  (Tell an adult immediately; block and report anything which alarms or upsets them; not to be tempted to click on links within emails and not to be pressured into doing something by others online).

We then created our own comic strip storyboards advising others on ways to be respectful and stay safe whilst being online.

Y4 Games Club

Year 4 have been enjoying interacting and socialising at our Thursday after school Games Club this term. From Chess to Twister and Ludo to Connect 4 we are having fun learning with and from each other whilst building and forming positive relationships.

Children’s Mental Health Week 2022

During Children’s Mental Health Week 2022, the children in Y3/4 have been identifying and discussing the range of emotions we often experience on a day to day basis. We talked about both positive and negative emotions and how they can affect us both psychologically and physiologically. From this, the children in each year group shared their own coping strategies for dealing with emotions which sometimes overwhelm us which include counting to 10, square breathing and finger breathing techniques, mindful colouring and doodling, reading a book, listening to music, talking to a friend or trusted adult and sharing how we feel as well as sitting quietly in a place which they find both safe, comfortable and relaxing to have some ‘ME’ time.

Across both year groups we focused on this years theme of ‘Growing Together’…

In Year 3, the children, danced and sang to ‘Reach for the Stars’ by S Club 7 before reaching for their own stars and identifying their goals and aspirations for the future…

In Year 4, the children identified all of the people who help them to grow both physically and mentally before creating their own ‘Support Bubbles’…

Year 4 have also been having fun learning the song ‘For Me’ from our Jigsaw scheme which inspires us to believe in ourselves and aim high with our goals and ambitions for the future!

Here we go round the mulberry bush

This week in music Year 1 have been singing ‘Here we go round the mulberry bush’.

We really enjoyed listening to and appraising this nursery rhyme.

We liked how the sounds of the words are loud and soft as we sing. We also like how some of the words repeat like the words in ‘London’s Burning’ did last week.

We found out ‘Here we go round the mulberry bush was created in the Victorian Era and Beatrix Potter would have sang this song as a child.

We were really confident singing this nursery rhyme and knew lots of different verses.

We decided to make up actions for some versions of the song.
