This week in F2…

This week in F2, we have continued with our story, The Enormous Turnip. In literacy as well as retelling the story using our signifiers, we had a go at hot seating. This is when one of the children pretends to be a character from the story, and the other children ask them questions. Mia, Forrest, Thomas and Declan took turns at being the farmer and the children thought of some fabulous questions…”why wouldn’t the turnip come out?”, “how did it taste?” and “have you ever grown anything so big?”.

In maths, we continued rotating and manipulating shapes to make more patterns and pictures.

On Wednesday we had a special visitor, Neil from the local Buddhist Centre. He chatted to us about Buddha, explained their beliefs and brought special artifacts which they use. We loved the special bell, drum and sound bowl, which we used while we did some meditation.

In Jigsaw (our PSHE learning) we were thinking about what makes a good friend and how we can make someone who is lonely feel happier.

We have also looked at the history of farming and created some beautiful trees in art, inspired by Kandinsky’s concentric circles.

PE was focused on our football skills; controlling, stopping and dribbling the ball and we also enjoyed different types of jumping… it’s been a very busy week!

F2 Stay and Play!

Bridge Building!

Yesterday afternoon F2 had a wonderful ‘stay and play’ session themed around building bridges!

To finish our story of ‘The Three Billy Goat’s Gruff’ we decided it would be nice to invite our families in to help us make our very own bridge for the Billy Goats to cross! We made and designed some fantastic models and showed great team-work, determination, perseverance and hard work!

Thank you to everyone who came in for our session, we hope you enjoyed it as much as us!

This week in F2…

In literacy we continued with the story of the 3 B

illy goats, but this time we got imaginative and innovated the story.  The goats changed to pigs and the troll turned into a scary dragon! We had great fun acting out our new story, and then used our phonic knowledge to write some fabulous sentences.

In maths we focused more on number bonds to 5 and 10, thinking of all the different ways to make these numbers. We’ve also sang number songs, our favourites are ’10 fat sausages’ where we need to take away numbers and ‘1 potato, 2 potato’ where we need to add

numbers.

In art we used our knowledge of paint mixing and got creative, painting our own concentric circles inspired by Kandinsky… they all looked truly amazing and individual.

In PE we continued with our circuit training. The children thoroughly enjoyed last week, so this week we invited Mrs. Marson to join us, and she did! After a good warm-up we had 60 seconds at each station… star jumps, burpees, walking lunges, step ups and planks… we all worked so hard, and then enjoyed a much needed cool down.

On Thursday Purple Pig Farm came to visit…we were all so excited! We saw a calf, sheep, pigs, rabbits and a 6 day old goat called Dora. We even got to hold a chick, which we all loved.

On Friday we all had ‘Freedom Friday’ as a reward for having the highest attendance of the week (Mrs. Buss/Miss Carrick’s class with 99%, amazing!) we get to wear non-uniform and have a flapjack treat… yummy!

We have also enjoyed our wonderful outdoor area this week … we’ve used tubes and pipes to make fantastic waterways, made sandcastles to keep the troll away, cooked delicious snacks for the goats in our mud kitchen and developed our physical strength on our climbing wall and pole…we love exploring and learning outside!

We hope you all have a happy Bank Holiday Weekend, we’ll see you back at school on Tuesday 6th May.

Kandinsky!

This term we have a new artist inspiration Wassily Kandinsky! We have learnt all about who Wassily was (he was a teacher at first!) and how he loved to listen to music whilst he got creative! His wonderful intrinsic circles inspired us to do some colour mixing, learning how to make up our own paints! And we loved creating colourful circles and especially enjoyed doing this to music! Lots of us said that we would like to go to art school as we loved painting and making colours! We chatted a lot about the colours we were using and how these colours made us feel! Sometimes colours can make you feel happy or sad or represent different things… like love or nature! Our paintings are so fabulous we have made our very own Kandinsky display!

This week in F2, we have continued our story, The 3 Billy Goats Gruff.

In literacy we have been retelling the story using our signifiers, while discussing the beginning, middle, end, problem, journey and solution of the story. We also thought of words to describe that terrible troll and used our ‘fred fingers’ to pinch the sounds to help us write:-

‘I can see a bad troll’, ‘Push the troll off’ and ‘It is bad grass’.

In maths we have continued exploring teen numbers and number bonds to ten as well as creating patterns and writing number sentences in our maths area.

In preparation for Purple Pig Farm visiting us next week, we looked at the differences between farm life and our own lives.

We have also been carefully watching our eggs, we can’t wait for them to hatch!

On Wednesday it was ‘Beep, beep day’ and the children really impressed us with their knowledge of road safety.  We took a walk in the local area, found a zebra crossing and used ‘stop, look, listen, think’ to cross the road safely.

In art we enjoyed exploring mixing primary colours to make new ones, red and yellow to make orange, blue and yellow to make green and that mixing red and blue makes purple. We also discovered that by adding white, we can make lots of different tones of colours, we had great fun!

This week in F2…

This week in F2, we have started our story, The 3 Billy Goats Gruff.

First, we read the book together, lots of us were familiar with it and loved joining in, especially with the “who’s that trip-trapping over my bridge?”

Next, we had great fun acting out the story…Mrs. Buss was the troll, she was very scary!

Finally, we read the story again, this time using signifiers to help to retell the story.

In literacy we have been sequencing the story, drawing a map of the story and adding dictated sentences (this is when we make up a sentence together, using the correct structure, including capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.)

In maths, we have been learning our teen numbers.  We know that a teen number always has one set of ten, so we can put that in our head and count on.

In PE we took part in team games, taking turns and cheering our team members on.

In RE we found out that Buddhism is one of the largest religions of the world, it is based what Buddha taught people and they live by 5 important rules. Not lying or stealing are two of them, we discussed why these are important to our lives too.

We also learnt about the famous artist Wassily Kandinsky. He was born in Russia in 1866 and many people believe he was the first abstract painter.  He didn’t paint objects and instead painted colours and shapes, often listening to music so he could try to paint what he heard and felt … next week we will be embracing our creativity and painting in the style of Kandinsky.

As always, we have spent lots of time learning and discovering outdoors…weeding and watering our tomato plants that have started to grow, checking our bug hotel for creatures, making troll bridges and a feast for the goats in the mud kitchen.

Y4 Architectural Drawing Trip

Today we ended this term’s art unit with a trip into the city centre to draw some of Hull’s buildings. In particular, we focussed on buildings which had common features of Roman architecture like pillars, vaults, columns, arches and domes.

The sun was shining and children had a fabulous couple of hours studying and sketching these wonderful buildings.

F1’s Gruffalo drawings

Today, F1 have been thinking about how the Gruffalo looks.  They had to look at the pictures and listen to the description, then choose what colours they needed for their pictures.

They were brilliant artists!  Well done everyone.
