sculptors

Year 2 have been sculptors this week.
During our art lesson Year 2 have been using the artist Julian Opie as an inspiration to create our own piece of art.
We have used clay to create self-portraits in the style of Julian Opie.
We thought about the lines Opie uses and incorporated these in our sculptures to create our features.
We began by recreating the shape of our faces with our clay. We needed to carve the shape before cutting the excess clay off to leave us with a face to add our features to.
We needed to mould and manipulate the clay to create our features. We rolled clay for our eyes before rolling and cutting pieces of clay to create other features such as eyebrows and lips. Our nose took much more moulding and shaping with our hands to ensure the correct size and look.
We are very proud of our finished self-portraits and are excited for them to dry.

HUB – Art

This week we looked at portraits drawn by the Artist Julian Opie.

We talked about what we liked and disliked about these images and explored how the Artist had used simple lines to create such effective, bold portraits.

This week, we used pens to sketch and create bold black lines to and recreate some of the portraits. What do you think to our work?

HUB – Art

This term we were asking ‘What can you see?” as Artists. We were looking very carefully at our own photographs to sketch our faces and features. We used a sketching technique and learned how to use a pencil to create shading. We were very proud of the results… take a look!

self portraits

This week in art, Year 2 have been sketching self portraits.

Last week we looked at facial features and had a practise at sketching them. This week we have thought more about these sketches and put them in our self portraits. We thought about the size of our features, the shapes and the position.

We started by looking at pictures of our own face and discussing where our eyes need to be sketched. From there we sketched our mouth and then our nose before adding further details to our sketch.

We used various graded art pencils in order to create soft and hard lines as well as creating different levels of shading in our sketches.

We are very proud of the work we have produced as artists.

Year 6 Art Banksy Style

Year 6 have been learning about one of Britain’s most influential modern –  day artists,  the graffiti famous Banksy. His artwork appears in public places as if by magic.  Eventhough his identity has never been revealed his work is instantly recognisable as he has a particular style.

We looked at lots of examples of Banksy’s work which encouraged the children to think deeply about the hidden meanings in pieces of art.

There is a common misconception that graffiti is something that has only appeared in modern day culture. However, this is not the case as forms of graffiti can be traced back to ancient times in places such as Rome and Greece.

To build confidence the children created pencil sketches…

Then the drawings were outlined in fine black marker pen to add detail…

Then permanent marker was added to add blocks of colour – creating a stencil effect – just like Banksy…

Some of our children preferred to remain anonymous…just like Banksy…

Then we linked the artwork to our history topic, Crime and Punishment…

And finally ….in true Banksy style…

Learning about varied forms of art work will inspire children to think about what artistic style they would like to adopt themselves.

Gruffalo’s Face Creations

We loved creating our Gruffalo faces!

We used a sponge painting technique to represent the fur.

We then copied the features on the Gruffalo’s face using 2D shaped card consisting of circles, squares and triangles.

We don’t think they are scary at all! We think the Grufallo and The Grufallo’s Child are really friendly! We love them!
