Year 2 have had a very Royal Time!

In Year 2, our new topic is Queens, Kings and Knights and we are finding out ‘What makes someone Royal?’

We have had a fabulous start to the year as we have been making some royal artefacts!

First, we learned about Coats of Arms, why people used them, why they colourful and why they used symbols. We looked at different designs and created our own!

Then, we learned all about crowns – this history of crowns, what they are made from and why the monarchy wear them.

Learning how to use Laptops

In Year 2 we have been practising logging on and off the laptops. We have been accessing our J2e accounts and have been creating some super Hull Fair pictures using lots of colours and shapes.

We are getting used to using the mouse and have even learned how to save some of our work!

Hull Fair comes to KS1

In KS1 this week we have had so much fun carrying out Hull Fair activities.

In Y2, we have been very creative using our senses to describe what we can see, hear, taste, smell and feel at the fair and have written some wonderful poems using lots of adjectives and prepositions.

We have all made chocolate apples and have written some very clear instructions for how to make them.

Year 2’s Fantastic Artwork

In Year 2 as artists we have been drawing, colouring and painting some of our circus friends. Today we made some wonderful clowns. We sketched a clowns face and once we were happy we outlined our drawing in black then we used oil pastels, coloured pens and paints to colour in our clowns. Haven’t we done a fabulous job?

Y5 Bridge Building with Clifton Primary School

Today some of us have had the chance to work with children from Clifton Primary School (a fellow HET school) to work together to participate in a STEM challenge.

We used various materials to build bridges to hold the weight of Humber the Bear, who is the HET mascot. We worked in mixed teams and demonstrated that we could work really well together!

Testing their design…but will it hold HET Bear?

Success! The bridge works, well done children!

Year 5 celebrate ‘Science Week’

On Tuesday the 12th of March, all of the year 5 children had the opportunity to go to Sirius to take part in a Science Day where we carried out experiments in Chemistry, Biology and Physics!

In Chemistry we looked at the process of chromatography and used special paper, different coloured pens and water to see how many different colours make up another colour.

In physics, we made paper aeroplanes and used a machine to make them fly – Declan from our school beat everyone as his plane flew a MASSIVE 9.8m and won a fantastic prize!

In biology we looked at a sheep’s respiratory system! The teacher dissected parts of its lungs and heart and we were able to hold and look at them! It was amazing to see what a lung looked like!

KS2 HUB Trip to Pickering Park Community Orchard

We had a lovely morning at Pickering Park Community Orchard. The sun was shining when we were met by Yvette who works at the orchard.

We got to taste three varieties of apple that are grown at the orchard – they were all delicious. We saw all of the bee hives and learnt how important they are in the pollination process and are the reason we have apples every year.

We used ‘Apple Wizards’ to collect all of the fallen apples from the ground and then we got to try the freshly pressed apple juice!

We picked apples from the trees and were allowed to take some home. A fabulous morning and well worth a trip!

KS2 HUB Hull Fair Day

In the KS2 HUB we have had a lovely morning celebrating Hull Fair.

We have been tasting Hull Fair sweets and describing what they taste and feel like, we have been painting pictures and describing what we can see at Hull Fair.

Outside on our balcony we have had our own Hull Fair games like Hook a Duck and target games – we have had to use our maths skills to see who won!

We have even made our very own chocolate apples – tomorrow we will be writing instructions!
