Computing Systems and Networks

Year 2’s Computing unit this term has been exploring Computing Systems and Networks. They have learned about the topic IT All Around Us. In the first lesson they learned that IT is a computer or something that works with a computer.  They then sorted different objects into two categories; IT and not IT.

In our second lesson they learned about how we use IT in school. They looked at the IT we have in our school and thought about the purpose of the IT we have. They then sorted several IT by their purpose.

In our third lesson, the children learned about IT beyond school. They thought about the features of different IT and sorted them into two categories; IT found outside and IT found inside!

During lesson four, the children learned about how information technology helps us. The children explored the roles of a barcode, scanner and till in a supermarket during the lesson and they learned about how these work together.

In lesson 5 the children thought about how to be safe using IT. They helped Jessica identify the rules she was breaking when using IT.

Finally, in lesson 6 they learned about how to use IT in a variety of ways and how to be mindful of the time they spend using IT.

Y2’s Art Workshop

Year 2 had a workshop with local artist Charlotte Eldred last week. In Art this term Year 2 are focusing on portraits. During the workshop with Charlotte they improved their doodling skills and created different portraits using a doodling style.

Here are some of Charlotte’s examples:

Here the children are completing their art work:

How to Catch a Martian

Last week Year 2 found some mysterious footprints around school! They went outside to investigate.

They predicted that they could be Martian’s footprints so they set a trap over the weekend.

On Monday they found a family of Martians in their trap! They orally learned some instructions for How to Catch a Martian and then wrote their instructions.

Then they looked at the features of instructions and wrote command sentences to help the Martians adapt to school life !

Colour Mixing

Year 2’s art enquiry this week was – How do we make new colours?

We revisited our knowledge of primary colours in Year 1 and made secondary colours. We mixed different combinations of  red, yellow and blue to make orange, green and purple.

Then we mixed our secondary colours to make tertiary colours! There were lots of different shades across the room!

We were proud of our colour mixing skills!

Numbers to 100

Year 2 have been exploring numbers to 100 in Maths. Their Maths unit is Place Value and they have been learning to read, write and represent number to 100.  Here they are  representing two- digit numbers in different ways.

They have also learned to partition these numbers into tens and ones. Have a look at their work!

Y2 Plant Trees

Year 2 have had a fabulous afternoon planting trees on the school field this afternoon. We each planted a tree. We planted them alongside a bamboo cane to ensure they keep their shape. On top of the tree, we placed a protective cylinder to ensure they do not get damaged. We can’t wait to watch them grow!

What makes you feel relaxed?

Year 2 have be learning about being relaxed. We thought about things that make us feel stressed and things that make us feel relaxed.

In groups, we looked at different scenarios and ordered them from most relaxing to least relaxing. Then we discussed ways we like to relax both at home and at school.

Letter Writing in Year 2

Year 2’s non-narrative unit this half term has been letters. They looked at different letters and identified the features of a letter. Then we learned about statement sentences and wrote our own questions and statements. As an end outcome, we thought of questions to ask King Charles III and wrote a letter to him. We then walked to the post box to post our letters! We hope that we get a reply!

Safer Internet Day

Year 2 have been celebrating Safer Internet Day today. This morning, we had a special assembly with Mr Morgan to talk about being safe on the internet. This afternoon, we discussed different reasons people use the internet. Then we found friends in our class who use the internet for different purposes and discussed these. After discussing why we use the internet, we then thought about strategies to keep us save and shared these as a class.

For story time, we read the story of Smartie the Penguin and used what we have learned to help him to learn how to be safe on the internet.

Making Equal Groups

Year 2 have started a new unit in Maths this week; Multiplication and Division. First of all we recapped our knowledge on the vocabulary equal and unequal. Equal means that all groups have to be the same.  Then we learned to recognise equal groups. Today we have learned how to make equal groups! Here we are making equal groups in class:

Tomorrow we will learn to add equal groups!
