Identifying Materials in Everyday Life

Year 2’s Science topic this half term in Materials. In Science this week, we have been identifying, grouping and classifying. We identified materials in everyday life both inside and outside.

Then we grouped our materials.

The King Who Banned The Dark

Year 2’s new Writing text this term is The King Who Banned the Dark. This week, the children have learned the signifiers for the story, created story maps and acted in the role of the king!

D&T in the Autumn Term in Year 2

This term, Year 2 have been looking at food in Design and Technology. Their brief was to create a healthy snack in the shape of a rocket.

Investigate 

First of all, they investigated where food comes from. The realised that healthy food usually comes from a plant or an animal. They  then sorted foods in to two groups.

Focussed Practical Task

The children practised the skills they would need. This involved slicing, grating, scooping and  cutting.

Design

The children then designed their own Rocket Pitta.

Make

The children used their new skills of slicing, scooping, grating and cutting to make their rocket pitta pizzas.

Evaluate

The children evaluated their snacks based on their appearance, taste and similarity to their design.

Exploring the character Finn

Year 2’s fiction text this half term is The Star Maker’s Apprentice. This week they have explored the main character, Finn. They wrote questions that they wanted to ask Finn and then did hot seating in the role of him.

They then used these ideas to write a diary entry in the role of Finn. Later in the week, they generated adjectives to describe Finn and wrote some fantastic character descriptions. Well done Year 2!

Anti-Bullying Week in Year 2

Year 2 have taken part in anti-bullying week this week. They wore odd socks for our odd socks day and took part in a whole school assembly with Mrs Marson. In PSHE, they then looked at how people might feel in different situations. They then discussed how small acts of kindness can put an end to bullying and discussed ways in which we can ensure we are an anti-bullying school.

Adding and Subtracting Tens

Year 2 have been learning how to add and subtract a tens number. They used base 10 to represent their tens and ones.

They noticed a pattern and learned the rule that when adding a tens number the ones always stay the same!

 

 

The Star Maker’s Apprentice

Year 2 have started their new fiction unit this week; The Star Maker’s Apprentice. To immerse themselves in the story. The children learned the signifiers for the story and used them to retell the story.Image

Then they drew story maps and acted out the story!

NSPCC PANTS

Year 2 have been learning about the NSPCC Pants rules in PSHE this week. We loved learning the Pantosaurus song and the we designed our own pants!

 

Learning to play the glockenspiels!

 During the autumn term the children in Year 1 have been learning to play the glockenspiel.

In this unit we focused on exploring and developing playing skills as well as introducing         the language of music.

We initially introduced the notes E and D and the children identified where these were on the instrument and then took turns to play them in time with the music.

Throughout the term we progressed to learning notes C, D, E, F and used these whilst playing the glockenspiels to a range of music.

 

 

Locating the equator

In Year 2 this term we having been learning about the world’s seven continents and five oceans. This week we learned about the equator. We located the equator on the globe and on different maps.Image

We then learned about the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. Phoebe told us, “We live in the Northern Hemisphere.”

We found some countries that lie on the equator and discussed what the weather is like there.
