Who is Da Vinci?

In our art lesson, year 5 have been learning all about Da Vinci, who was active as a painter, draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor, and architect. We used our research skills to find out about Da Vinci’s achievements: learning some names of his famous drawings and sculptures. In this lesson, the children explored Da Vinci’s techniques using out shading and sketching skills.

Here are some of our final designs:

learning new key/note

Year 5 have been learning to play ‘rocket ship’ which is a song consisting of the notes A and G. Today, the children are learning a new note, E.

We are loving our weekly clarinet lessons with Mrs Hall!

children’s mental health week

Chrildren’s Mental Health Week activity:

This week, we have been celebrating children’s mental health and raising awareness for what makes us happy and recognising our own personal triggers that make us feel down. As recognition for what things make us happy, we created our own paper chain full of ideas. Some drawings included:

  • Family
  • Friends
  • Reading
  • School
  • Teachers
  • Food
  • Sports
  • Nature
  • Animals

Here is our finished product!

Engineering day!

On Wednesday, Year 5 visited an egineering company – OSL – where they took part in  arange of activities linking to the subject. The activities included:

  • Completing a circuit to sound a buzzer
  •  Using their knowledge of construction to put together a triangle using nuts and bolts
  • Conduct an experiment to act against gravity – using plastic bottles, water and tubes

During these activities, the children learnt a substansive amount of knowledge about how to become an engineer and what the job role consists of.

Here are some images of the children during the day:

For the second half of the day, we then went to an architectural business – GGP. Here the children took part in an activity where they had to build their on bridge out of straws, which had to withstand a brick. We had so much fun!

Blast off!

Over the year so far, Year 5 have been extremely lucky to be taught to play the clarinet by Mrs Hall. This week, the children were learning to play a piece called Blast Off. We ended the performance by raising out clarinets to the music. We are doing amazingly!!!

To know about a range of jobs and careers

In PSHCE this week, Year 5 were learning about a range of jobs careers. The children began by ordering a list of jobs from most important to least important; we then discussed their thoughts and ideas as to why they had position the cards in their places. Some of the points that were raised were salary, importance to the community and enjoyment. After this, the children worked in groups to come up with the salary of each job/career and they then decided whether the career was underpaid, overpaid or respectfully paid.

This week’s lesson was very important to understand job roles and their benefits and disadvantages.

Well done Y5MEA!

Viking Shields

Over the past three afternoons, Year 5 have been learning all about our new topic for the term: Anglo Saxons and Vikings. The main subject we have been discussing is the Anglo Saxon and Viking shields: analysing genuine and replica images of shields and gathering conclusions about what the Vikings were like, based on the fact they had shields.

The children participated in a craft activity then designed their own shields and used paper mache to create a boss in the centre of their shields. They then painted their chosen design onto their templates. Here are some photographs of our designs.

In today’s English lesson, Year 5 studied a range of letters of complaint. We analysed the grammatical and structural features of a letter and then worked in partners to identify these features. We worked together amazingly and are now much more confident when finding features of a letter.
