Fantastic Food Chains in Year 2

In Science, we have been learning about habitats and the animals that live in them.

As part of this unit at work we have investigated food chains.

We began by talking about which plants and animals other animals ate.

We looked at lots of different pictures of animals and plants from a variety of habitats.

.

Next, we sorted our pictures into food chains.

Finally, we drew our own scientific diagrams and created a food chain with explanations using the key words we had learnt.

Music with actions in Year 2!

In Year 2 we are learning songs all about pirates and the sea!

To help us learn “The Pirate Singalong” we put some actions to the words.

We learnt the rhythm and pitch once we knew the actions then performed the whole thing!

Year 2 have a super WOW day!

It was our WOW day today to bring our new topic “Explorers of the Sea,” to life. Our children came to school dressed as explorers or pirates!

We started the day by learning some pirate phrases!

Afterwards, we realised we might be wanted by the police because we were pirates. We wrote some wanted posters!

Next, we went on a treasure hunt outside to find our stolen treasure!

Once we were back in the classroom we shared our treasure out and drew a treasure map!

Finally, we spent the afternoon creating a 3D under water treasure chest scene by painting the sea with watercolour, colouring sea creatures and gluing treasure onto the chest.

Year 2 have been learning about Easter!

We started by thinking about what we had learned about Palm Sunday. We remembered lots of key information.

Next, we listened to the Easter story together and watched a short, animated film about Easter.

We learnt about the important days and what happened to Jesus on those days.

After that, we ordered the special days and match pictures to the correct statements for each day.

Finally, after some well deserved playtime, we had a quiz to see what we could remember about our learning. Lots of children got full marks and everyone had learned something new! Well done Year 2!

We have been learning about what plants need to grow. Today we started an ongoing investigation to test if our ideas were correct.

We started by discussing how a seed could start to grow.

We learnt new vocabulary to describe the growing process such as dormant and germinate.

Next, we split into groups and were told which condition our plant would or would not have before making a prediction about whether our seed would grow or not.

We planted our seeds and made sure we were conducting a fair test by only removing one of the conditions in each group and having one group with all conditions.

Finally we placed all our our planted seeds in a similar place to gain the same amount of sunlight and air, all except the ones we are testing for not having any light which had to go in the cupboard!

We will keep monitoring the seeds over the next few weeks to see what happens!

Child Mental Health Awareness Week in Year 2

We have done lots of “wake up” morning exercises, regular calming breathing sessions and some meditation.

We have also been talking about our feelings and how we can make ourselves feel better if we are experiences negative feelings.

Lots of our children liked to dance, sing, draw or have cuddles to make themselves feel better. We tried to make sure everybody felt happy by singing “If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands!”

Year 2 artists!

We have been very busy and creative during our art lessons in Year 2 this half term.

We began by investigating tints and tones, the colour wheel and different textures. Then we investigated the artist Kandinsky.

We explored different media to create circles. We used oil pastels and acrylic paint.

To complete our art pieces we covered our page with brusho. Here are our final pieces!

Our art didn’t stop there! We moved onto sculpture and researched the work of Alexander Calder. We started by creating our own 3D shapes.

Next, we worked as a team to create a sculpture out of wire and polystyrene balls.

Finally we put all of our sculptures together to make two huge class sculptures. We were really proud of our final piece.

Year 2 are learning about Christian Symbols!

This week we have been learning about Christian symbols.

We started by looking at symbols that we already knew like McDonalds, recycling and Batman.

Next, we learnt which symbols are special to Christians.

Then, we discussed special places that Christians visit and learnt about churches with stained glass windows.

Finally, we created our own stained glass windows with Christian symbols.

Year 2 are learning how to create spreadsheets!

Year 2 have been working extremely hard in computing this half term. We have learnt about online safety, what algorithms are and how to create them and how to send emails.

This week we are learning about spreadsheets.

We had to listen really carefully and follow the step by step instructions.

We worked in pairs and with our teachers to create a spreadsheet using Purple Mash.

It was tricky to start with but we all persevered until we had created a spreadsheet that we could use.

Great work Year 2!
