Year 1 Computing

This week, Year 1 had their first use of our school laptop computers, but first they needed to be able to identify the screen, keyboard and mouse/trackpad.

They enjoyed learning how to turn on and log in to a laptop computer using their QR codes.

All of the children had a turn at developing their trackpad skills by completing a puzzle program. They needed to use the trackpad to grab and drag each puzzle piece… this proved a little tricky and it’s a skill that we will be working on developing more next week.

Year 1 Computing

Year 1 were excited to start their Computing lessons this week, more especially to get their hands on the laptops… but first we had to find out what Technology is.

We shared thoughts about what the word ‘technology’ actually means and we discovered it is anything made by people to help us.

The children then searched our classroom to find items of technology.  The children were able to find many things and say how they help us… Chester told us that “pencils help us write and draw”, while Ivy said “the globe shows us the world and where places are” and all the children were surprised when Elio said his coat was technology as it helps to keep him dry and warm!

Technology is absolutely everywhere in our classroom, so we had to go outside to find things that aren’t technology… trees and the sky aren’t technology as they are not made by people.

Outdoor in FS2

Our new Foundation Stage 2 children have loved getting outside and enjoyed exploring our fabulous outdoor area this week.

Outdoor play has so many developmental benefits.  It helps our children to develop self-confidence, independence and self-esteem.

They also become aware of limits, boundaries and challenge in their play.

Our children get the opportunity to develop their social skills by listening, paying attention and sharing play experiences – this helps them explore their feelings and develop self-discipline.

Outdoor is a great time for their physical development too… our climbing wall proved a great challenge, it got us problem solving and using our gross motor skills, working out how to pull and push and where to place our hands and feet can be tricky at times! It also showed how determined our children are, as they tried and tried again until they got to the top, never giving up, well done everyone!

Exploring ‘Green’

Foundation Stage have been exploring all things GREEN!

We looked at how we can make green and explored different shades of it. We went on a green scavenger hunt to start with, exploring our outside area on a hunt for green things. We found lots of natural things around us- like leaves and plants! But we also spotted lots of toys and equipment that was green! We brought it altogether so we could explore the shade and then had a go at making our own shades of green, using white to make it lighter and black to make it darker. We explored what happens when we add more blue or more yellow.

In literacy we have been reading  ‘Jack and the Beanstalk‘ so lots of us decided to use our experimented green shades to create our own beanstalks! They looked absolutely superb, so we have showcased them around the classroom on display!

Our Fabulous FS2

Our FS2 Bubble have embraced the beautiful outdoor weather this week…

we have dressed as superheroes, princesses, ninja turtles, mermaids, pirates…we have danced, sang, laughed and so much more!

We have chatted, helped, shared and played with our friends…

it has been a truly wonderful week.

Next week will be our final week together and we are so excited at all the happy times we have planned to end this extra ordinary school year…

especially our Seaside Day on Wednesday ☀️🙂☀️

Fabulous outdoor times in FS2

We have started our last term in FS2 this week by making the most of the beautiful weather and our wonderful outdoor area…

Vegetable soup was on the menu, exploring and chatting about our favourite vegetables, demonstrating excellent skill when using our safety knifes to chop and amazing team work to get the soup prepared… and of course it tasted delicious!

Caring for friends and talking together, sharing special stories and adventures.

Our minds are always inquisitive and we love experimenting and exploring!

Outdoor learning in the Summer is the best experience!

F2 Forest School 🌼 🍃🌿🍃🌼

The children had a wonderful time today, helping to develop our forest area.

First we used two pallets to make a bed…a stage…a sofa…maybe even a magic carpet…

…then we use logs, stumps and planks to make an assault course.

We tested and checked to make sure it was steady and safe… then we carefully balanced around, slow and steady…

…after that, we explored our campfire area and using our fabulous imagination we toasted marshmallows and sang songs.

We were careful not to go too close, staying on the edge of our safety circle. It was good to investigate the patterns on the bricks we used to surround our fire pit…

…and finally, we looked for bugs, planted a tree and worked together at tidy away time.

We love our forest area!

A happy Forest School day 🍃🌿🍃

It’s wonderful having all of our children back at school and carrying on with our Forest School.

First activity… mud painting!

After donning our wetsuits and wellies, we set about collecting twigs, herbs and mud.

The herb we collected was rosemary, we gave it a good sniff… it smelt delightful.

We then attached it to a twig to make our brush… it was a little tricky for some of us, but we helped each other.

We were so proud of the brushes we had made.

Then we scooped, stirred and mixed our mud with bubbly water (which also smelt fabulous!) and added magic coloured powder to make our amazing mud paint.

We painted with the mud, it was different to our usual paint but we liked the patterns we could make with it.

Our fabulous creations!

We’re going on a worm hunt!

We had fun in the Mud Kitchen today… we went on a worm hunt!

First we worked together to lift the logs to search for worms…it was wet and warm under there and that’s what worms like…the children were very brave and picked them carefully up.

We collected lots of worms, chatting about how we looked after all insects and creatures.

So we then decided that we needed to make a home for them.

We got a container and decided to fill it with leaves, sand, grass and some wet sloppy mud… all the things that worms love and then we popped them in their new home…

they absolutely loved it…

…and so did we!

Being creative…

The children love our creative area.

It enables provision of a new set of skills for self expression and communication as well as giving an outlet for them to express and cope with their feelings.

There is no right or wrong, we encourage the children to try out new ideas, new ways of thinking and problem solving, as well as being able to practise and develop known skills…

just look at the concentration on these lovely faces…

… and their fabulous creations and happy faces!

Some of our children’s creative master pieces, all unique and individual…

Layla’s Mr. Norman mask…

Harrison’s rocket with super blasters…

Lottie’s space rocket that’s as tall as her…

Millie’s owl puppet…

Grayson’s collage owl…

…and Isabella’s Bill, with added squares to make him just right!
