Harvest

This week in our religion lesson, Year 3 have been talking about Harvest.

We recalled all the in formation we knew about Harvest. We could recall how farmers Harvest their crops and then store it for use throughout the winter. We talked about Christian church services and how Christians give thanks to God. We could also recall how Christians then help others by giving away food that is collected during Harvest services.

We found out that this years harvest moon was on 28th September and Christians celebrated this on Sunday 1st October.

We looked at some different Christian prayers for Harvest and realised they all  say thank you for different things. Some thanked farmers, some thanked God and some thanked shop workers and adult who cook.

Year 3 decided to write their own Harvest prayers to give thanks for important things to them during Harvest. We then performed these prayers to each other.

Chronology

This week Year 3 have been discussing chronology and what this means.

We have discussed how chronology tells us the order things happened in.

During our history lesson we have begun to look at the history of Hull. We spent some time looking at some sources of evidence and discussing what these sources showed us. We then had a go at putting our sources into the correct chronological order.

We discussed how black and white photographs must be older than coloured ones and how paintings must be even older as these were created before cameras were invented.

Once we had created our chronological timeline we discussed the correct order of events in Hull.

We then created our own timeline in our books ensuring we thought about the chronological order of the events.

We cannot wait to find out lots of information about these events that shaped the city of Kingston Upon Hull.

our nightmare school – our dream school

Over the past two weeks Year 3 have been discussing how we would like our school to be.

We had Jigsaw Jino to help us. We discussed what types of things would happen in a nightmare school and how these things would make us feel if they happened in our own school.

We talked about rubbish being all over and the school being dirty, children hurting each other and if there was broken equipment. Nobody wanted to be in a school like this and we discussed how we look after our school to make sure non of these things happen. We then       drew a picture of our nightmare school and the bad things that may be in it.

This week we have discussed what our dream school may be like.

Jigsaw Jino came to help us again. We discussed how having nice things such as computers and nice books make a good school. That kind, helpful teachers and children who are friends make a school a nice place to be.

Again we discussed how we could make this happen in our school. We talked about the responsibilities we have and how our school golden rules help us to have a nice school. Things like looking after equipment, keeping our hands and feet to ourselves and being kind makes our school a nice place to come everyday. We the drew our dream school next to our nightmare school and talked about which one we like the most and why.

we are actors

This week in Year 3 we have been learning the story of ‘Ocean meets Sky’.

We have used signifiers to be able to retell the story before we drew a story map.

Once we knew the story we were able to act the story out.

We decided in our groups who would play which character. There were lots of characters to be. The main character is called Finn an there is his grandfather and mother in the story along with a great golden fish and bookish birds.

As we acted we were able to retell the story to our peers and perform the story.

Recorders

Year 3 were thrilled to recieve their recorders this week and begin to talk about how we will be playing them. Over the year we will be learning to play the recorder. This week we begun with getting used to holding our new instrument and practising where to place our fingers.

We had a go at making sounds and discussed how we will make different notes with our finger placements. We had a go at making soft and loud sounds by blowing gently through the mouth piece. We are very excited to start to look at the different notes next week.

We also talked about how we look after instruments and how to handle them correctly.

Getting to know each other

Year 3 were very excited this week to meet Jigsaw Jino.

Jigsaw Jino helps the class to learn about lots of different things during our Jigsaw PSHE lessons.

This week Year 3 have looked at things they have achieved so far in their life and things they are proud of.

We talked about how we feel when we are proud of ourselves and some of the things we have done to be proud of. We are proud of achievements such as learning to write, ride our bikes, tie our shoe laces and count to a thousand. We are also proud of being good friends and being kind to each other.

We decide what we were most proud of and wrote them down on our gold coins to post in the proud box.

Year 3 have many things to be proud of and can not wait to achieve more during the year to be proud of.

layering

This week in art we have started to create our own seascape based on the work of John Ward.

We have spent the last few weeks looking at how John Ward uses cold colours and we practised creating tints and tones with these colours.

We then spent time discussing how using different medias in our art can create  layer and texture. We practised this technique using oil pastels, paint and PVA glue. After seeing how these medias work together we were ready to create our own seascapes using these medias.

We have started our own artwork by using oil pastels. We have thought about the lines we need and the shading we can add. We have also thought about how we can use paint and PVA glue to create texture.

Our first layer is beginning to look like the start of some fantastic seascape pictures. We cannot wait to add our paint and PVA next week.

Volcano art

In art this term, we have looked at the work of Nick Rowland and the work of JMW Turner. We have compared their work and discussed the different techniques they have used.

Nick Rowland has created colourful volcano pictures using different art techniques such as colour washing and splattering. JMW Turner has created an eruption of Mount Vesuvius using more traditional techniques including sketching and oil painting.

We have sketched our own pictures of Mount Vesuvius, taking inspiration from JMW Turners work. We have ensured we thought about the light and dark shades in our pictures and the dark and light lines as well as thick and thin lines. We used a selection of sketching pencils to create our sketches, we then added detail and darker lines with charcoal.

We added an eruption to our sketch of Mount Vesuvius. We used Nick Rowland as our inspiration for this and used a splattering technique to show the lava erupting from the volcano.

Let’s sing together

This week in music, Year 2 have been listening to ‘Let’s Sing Together’.

We began our lesson by appraising our piece of music. This week the music made us feel a little sleepy. It was slow and calm, there was gentle instruments in the music and a soft drum was being tapped. The music mad us all feel relaxed and we wanted to hear more.

The music we performed this week was called ‘Let’s Sing Together’. this music woke us all back up. The music had a quicker beat and the words were very repetitive. We were able to sing the sing, following the words on the screen, really quickly. We loved the words and wanted to try and sing this song differently.

We wanted to try and sing this song in a round as it was repeated. We remembered how to sing in a round from Year 1 and enjoyed this.

We sang ‘Let’s Sing Together’ in a round, each table starting at a different point to create a class performance.

We hope you like our final performance.

tints and tones

Over the past 2 weeks, Year 2 have been looking at tints and tones in our art lessons.

We began by looking at seascapes created by John Ward. We discussed how his art uses cold colours. We recalled the different cold colours we had used in Year 1 and identified these in the painting by John Ward.

We then used some cold colours to create our own colour palates. We added white paint to our original paint to create tints and we added grey to create tones.

We then looked at the seascapes created by Nicholas Hadeed, these used warm colours. We again recalled the different warm colours we used in Year 1.

We used warm colours to create our own palate of warm tints and tones. Again, we added white paint to create tints and grey paint to create tones.
