symmetrical and asymmetrical balances

In P.E this term, Year 3 have been Gymnasts performing a sequence of moves with a partner which includes symmetrical and asymmetrical balances using different apparatus. These balances have included using different levels and same level balances.  In order to perfect the flow of our sequences of balances, we have practised and performed for our peers. After taking feedback on board, our sequences have been much improved and flowed better.

partitioning numbers to 1000

Year 3 have been working on our place value unit in maths to start the term. We have looked at hundreds, tens and ones and how these make up numbers to 1,000. We have used the base 10 resources this week to help us partition our numbers. We began by making a number and the partitioning it in to hundreds, tens and ones.

We then looked at how these numbers could be partitioned more flexibly. We realised that when we add our parts together they add up to the same whole number. We moved our hundreds, tens and ones around to see how many ways we could partition a number.

ocean meets sky

Year 3 were surprised to find a mysterious suitcase left in our classroom this week. Who owns it? Where did it come from? What’s inside? Just some of the questions the Year 3 children had.

The children were very quick to notice that the suitcase had a label saying ‘Grandpa’.

Inside was many exciting things including a book labeled ‘Grandpa’s Stories’, some dumplings and a picture of a boy with a man.

We knew that these were all things telling us about our new story ‘Ocean meets Sky’ and we used them to help us make predictions.

Some children thought the story would be about eating dumplings on a boat in the sun whilst others thought the story could be about a special trip that Grandpa is going to take. We can not wait to discover who the characters are and what is going to happen in our story.

reflective materials

Year 3 have been looking at light in our first science unit. We discovered that there are many light sources that we use every day including the sun, light bulbs, phones and televisions. We were very surprised to discover that the moon is not a source of light and that it only reflects light from the sun. We decided to see what other materials reflected light and which materials reflected this best. We carried out a fair test on materials including tin foil, card and fabric.

We discovered that the most reflective materials had a smooth surface and that the light reflected brightest from these types of materials.

First recorder session

Year 3 were very excited to start our music lessons this week.

Over the year we will be learning to play the recorder. This week we began with getting used to holding our new instrument and practising where to place our fingers.

We had a go at making sounds and discussed how we will make different notes with our finger placements. We had a go at making soft and loud sounds by blowing gently through the mouth piece. We were very excited to start to look at the different notes and could confidently identify the first note. Year 3 can now confidently play a B note. We also talked about how we look after instruments and how to handle them correctly.

The history of hull

This week Year 3 have been discussing chronology and what this means.

We have discussed how chronology tells us the order things happened in.

During our history lesson we have begun to look at the history of Hull. We spent some time looking at some different pictures showing different points in the history of Hull. We then discussed the chronological order of these events.

We discussed how black and white photographs must be older than coloured ones and how paintings must be even older as these were created before cameras were invented.

Once we had created our chronological timeline we discussed the correct order of events in Hull and how over the Autum Term we will be finding out lots more about these events.

We then created our own timeline in our books ensuring we thought about the chronological order of the events.

We cannot wait to find out lots of information about these events that shaped the city of Kingston Upon Hull.

Graffiti

Year 3 have completed their final piece of art for this term.

They have created some amazing name tags using fabric paint and t shirts.

We spent time looking at all different types of graffiti going back to cave art in the stone age all the way through to work of a local street artist called Dieynaba Sidibe.

We practised making our own tags with various materials including pencils and pastels before we had a go at using fabric paints.

Once we had done lots of practising and were happy with our tags we were able to recreate them on our t shirts.

We used fabric paints and brushes to create our tags and we were all very happy with our completed piece of art.

Geography fieldwork

Year 3 had the fantastic opportunity this term to complete fieldwork comparing villages and towns.

We began our fieldwork by visiting the local town of Hessle.  We were lucky to be able to walk to the town where we discussed the differing types of land use we could see as well as recording the different types of buildings we passed on our walk. We saw lots of different shops in Hessle including food shops, pet shops and a post office. There were many pubs and we walked past 2 churches as well as local park. We discussed the size of populations in towns and if all these facilities were needed.  Before we left Hessle we had the opportunity to carry out a traffic survey. We used a bar method to record all traffic that past us in a 5 minute period. We kept our findings ready to compare with what we discovered on our next fieldwork trip.

Next, we had the opportunity to visit Brantingham. This is a local village, we had to use the school minibus to get here as it was a little further than Hessle. Again, we discussed the types of land use we could see in Brantingham and recorded the building we saw as we walked around. This time there were no shops, no post office and there was only one pub and one church. We discussed the size of populations in villages and we were very surprised that it did not take us long to walk the whole length of Brantingham. Before we left we carried out a traffic survey. Again, we used a bar method to count all vehicles that passed us in a 5 minute period.

When we were back at school we were able to compare Brantingham with Hessle. We were all shocked to compare the findings of our traffic survey. When we were in Hessle we struggled to record all the vehicles but in Brantingham we were waiting for them to come past us. Only 4 vehicles passed us in Brantingham! We compared the shops and facilities of both areas and discussed how a town would need these facilities more than a village due to its bigger population. We also discussed how land use in a town had more commercial and industrial use than a village which had more agricultural and forestry use and the reasons for this.

Year 3 really enjoyed our field work and seeing these types of settlements for ourselves made us realise the huge differences between them both.

creating an Iron Age tunic

Year 3 have completed our Design and Technology unit this week. We have had great fun creating an iron age tunic for our teddy bears.

Investigation

We begun our D&T by investigating about patterns and how these are made. We looked at different clothes designers and discussed how all of their designs differ from each other.

Focused Practical

We used two pieces of material to create a pocket. We had to sue different stitches, one of these was easier than the other. We practised using a running stitch, we found this one was the easier of the two. We then practised using an overstitch, lots of u found this one hard.

Once we had practised our sewing skills we thought about the patterns we needed to create to help us. We had to take measurements of our teddy bear to ensure our pattern was the correct size before we could create our pattern with paper.

Make

In order to make our tunics we pinned our pattern to some hessian before carefully cutting around it. We then decided which stitches to use to join our tunic together. Most of us chose a running stitch as we found this one easier to do.

It took lots of patience and we had to be careful when we sewed our tunic together.

Evaluate

When our tunics were finished we put the on our teddy bears. Some were a little tight and some of us had to cut the front to get them on so we created jackets.

We completed an evaluation of our finished tunic and thought about the things we did well and things we would change if we made a tunic again.

Mental health and yoga

This term Year 3 have been doing Yoga in PE and we were very proud of ourselves for remembering lots of poses we learnt in Year 2. Can you spot our tree?

As part of mental health week we talked about how Yoga can help us to clear our minds and help us to relax.

We tried lots of different breathing exercises such as box breathing and shark breaths. We all loved how calm this made us feel.
