Mrs Hebden’s class

During our social choosing time today, these boys decided to dig out an old classic and were taught how to play it. The boys developed their use of coordinates, logic and strategy to try and beat their opponent whilst playing Battleships today.

Mrs Hebden’s Class – Art

We loved the bold colours and lines used by the Scottish Artist Steven Brown and we think you may have seen some of his famous images before, like this one taken from his website.

Brandon drew some beautiful animal images and then used colour to give them a Steven Brown inspired feel. Great work Brandon!

Raphael enjoyed using bold colours to bring his wonderful elephant sketch to life. Well done Raph!

Mrs Hebden’s HUB class visit to the Aviary

We had a great afternoon at Pickering Park Aviary on Wednesday!

The Meerkats and tortoises were our favourites. We think the Meerkats enjoyed watching us just as much as we enjoyed watching them!

So many smiles, so many lovely photographs of us, enjoying each other’s company and friendship.

Y5 River Hull Geography Fieldwork

As Geographers, the Y5 students have been learning about how rivers are formed. They’ve explored UK rivers and world famous rivers but with us living in a city that is shaped by two rivers, The River Hull and The River Humber, we wanted to take our learning outside of the classroom to find out more.

We challenged our Y5 Geographers to identify how land is used beside the river at various points and how the function of the river changes as a result.

Our first stop was at the mouth of the RIver Hull!

We identified land use, talked about the changes in the area and the promotion of tourism. We created excellent sketch maps, working with our partner to label and identify significant human and physical features. We looked at flooding defence and the importance of the huge tidal barrier that can be seen near The Deep.

For the second part of the visit, we headed inland as we followed the course of the River Hull all the way to the outskirts of Driffield. Here we visited the Yorkshire Water Nature Reserve, Tophill Low. We learned about reservoirs, drains and fish gates here as well as rivers from our very knowledgable guide Richard. We asked fantastic questions as Richard helped us to complete our fieldwork tasks. This was such a contrasting setting to the urban mouth of the river, a tranquil rural beauty spot where tourism was also encouraged to help fund flood prevention in our area.

Richard told us that the enormous reservoirs at Tophill hold enough water to supply Hull for 90 days!

Being knee deep in the grasses, there was lots of talk about snakes! Richard showed us the skins of the snakes that live in the area but told us not to worry, as soon as they heard our footsteps (and voices) they would have scarpered and were not at all venomous!

Needless to say, after getting all of those ‘steps in’, we were shattered on the way back!

HUB Art

Working in our beautiful school grounds in todays Art Lesson in the sun! Our objective was ‘really noticing’ as we spent time observing and sketching objects that captured our interests.

HUB Fundraising Fun

We looked amazing for our Rock/Pop Star day to support Viking FM’s Cash for Kids appeal. Thank you to all of our families for your continued support, the thought and effort in today’s outfits was amazing!

Here are a few snaps of us dancing, we are ‘Rolling on a River’, remembering the late Tina Turner with our classmate River, who tells us that he was named after this song!

HUB English

This week, we explored the features of a non-chronolgical report. We loved the Storm Whale story so decided that we would like to know more about the mighty whale. We worked in pairs to decide our title and subtitles and then researched our chosen areas of study. We demonstrated great research skills, independence and team work to complete this project are were really proud of our reports!

HUB Swimming Lessons

Over the course of two weeks, our 4 Year-Four HUB children visited Beverley Road Swimming Baths every afternoon. We loved visiting this beautiful building with its mosaic floors and unique viewing gallery. Every day, we made great progress and grew in confidence in the water. We learned a variety of swimming techniques and practiced safe rescue. A great fortnight with lots of resilience and perseverance and we are REALLY PROUD of you all!

We even spotted a decimal number on the pool wall, “Look Miss, just like what have been learning about in Maths!” 🙂

HUB Artists

Over the last few Art lessons, we have been exploring new techniques; from sketching with charcoal and pencil to splattering and scraping with paints. We are hoping to recreate the most almighty volcanic eruption in our final piece, so we are working towards creating some impressive marks!!!!
