Y3 JIGSAW: Being Me in My World

In Year 3, we have been identifying our positive traits and the things we would like to achieve this academic year. From achieving a pen licence, learning our times tables, improving our running speed so that we can run faster on Sport’s Day next year to reading more books, the children all recognise that to be the best that they can be they need to practise in order to achieve their newly set goals.

In a class discussion, the children recognised that our actions often bring rewards as well as consequences and have identified the many ways that we can help each other to remain positive. We recognised that at Christopher Pickering, we receive Dojos as a reward and that our Traffic Light System is is place to manage both positive and negative actions. A range of scenarios were explored which enabled the children to work as a team to agree on the many ways we can can solve a situation together as well as to agree on the rewards and consequences that should be in place.

Y4 JIGSAW: Being Me in My World

In Year 4, we have discussed the concept of the way an individual’s attitude and actions can make a difference to the class team. We also explored the concept of inclusion and exclusion and all agreed that feeling included allows an individual to feel that they belong. We then shared our own definitions of what Teamwork is…

Standing up for each other
Inclusion
Respect
Being kind
Working together
Feeling Safe

The children went on to identify all of the individuals who are a part of the Christopher Pickering Community and realised that in order for our school to function effectively that everyone works together as a TEAM!

For Mental Health Week 2022, as a class we explored the question ‘What is Mental Health?’ We worked collaboratively to arrange and array of situations which may impact on either our physical and mental health or in some instances both.

In Year 4 this term, we are exploring what it means to a follower of a faith to belong to their community.  So far, the children have explored what it means to belong to the Jewish Community by listening to Charlie, a young boy, who feels immensely proud of his faith and demonstrates upmost respect to the Jewish rules, values, traditions and customs it imparts.

You can access the link below to see how Charlie has helped us gain new knowledge about his religious community:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/religious-studies-ks2-what-is-judaism/zfbhf4j

To extend our learning, we explored various symbols which have significant meaning for the Jewish Community such as the Torah (Hebrew Bible), the Kippah (a hat worn by men and boys in the Synagogue), the Tallit (a prayer shawl), the Menorah (a candelabrum) and the Kiddush Cup (used in special ceremonies/blessings). This led to a discussion of the symbols we see in our everyday life and the meanings they have within our own communities that we belong to.

We all feel that Charlie has helped us to understand better how he, as a follower of the Jewish faith, feels about belonging to his religious community and as a result can compare his feelings with those of our own in relation to the communities we all belong to eg: Family, Friends, Clubs, Christopher Pickering, Phase 3/4 and many more. Thanks Charlie!

Y4 Badminton

Y4E have thoroughly enjoyed their Badminton lessons with our visitor Paul Pratt this term.  We have learnt how to hold the racket using a forehand and backhand (thumb grip), how to present and hold the shuttle and perfected our stance (T position).  After lots of practice both independently and with a partner, we were able to demonstrate our skills in a volley.

Thank-you Paul for the skills you have taught us.

This week in art we have been learning about a local artist called Tracy Savage from Hornsea who has painted lots of paintings of our local area including ‘The Fruit Market’ in Hull and ‘Norwood’ in Beverley.

We spend some time looking at her work and finding the subjects of her paintings and the style in which she paints.

We used our knowledge of the drawing techniques we have learned so far this unit (shading, using pressure, hatching and cross hatching) to recreate one of her paintings using pencil in preparation for next lesson where we will be creating our own Tracy Savage inspired drawing of landmarks in Hull.

The High Sheriff Visits CPPS!

This afternoon we had a very special visitor in school: Jacky Bowes who is the High Sheriff of the East Riding. The High Sheriff has been spending time with Tigers Trust this week to see firsthand some of the brilliant work they do. She came to CPPS to see the PLPS programme in action and joined in with a Y4 active maths lesson.

Children were working with our partnership coach Will to practise their times tables in a dodgeball type game. Jacky was very impressed and commented on the fantastic attitude of our children. Well done Y4!

Year 3 are learning about chronology

This week in our history lesson we have been finding out about chronology and timelines.

We studied a timeline which shows British and world history and found out what BC/BCE and AD/CE mean! We could not believe that the Stone Age was so long ago and we were all shocked to find out that while in Britain the stone age was taking place, in Egypt, the Ancient Egyptians were building pyramids.

We used a variety of pictures of different sources of evidence to look at clues about the history of Hull and had the opportunity to discuss what we thought they were and showed and were able to ask questions about them.

We were fascinated that Hull wasn’t always called Hull or Kingston upon Hull where in 1299 King Edward made a charter and changed its name – before that it was called Wyke. We were shocked to find out how badly Hull was bombed and when this happened!

We added significant events onto our timeline in chronological order and are all looking forward to find out more about Hull!

We are drawing using a variety of media and techniques!

Today in art we have been using sketch pencils and charcoal to carry out observational drawings of Hull’s well known landmarks such as The Deep and The Humber Bridge.

We used the skills we learned last lesson and applied them to our drawings. With the Humber Bridge, we used different pressures to shade in darker areas and used hatching and cross hatching for shadows.

When we used the charcoal, even though some of us got very messy, we  used smudging to create different effects on the buildings.

Wilberforce House Sports Day

Although Blues didn’t win on sports day we had a superb time throughout the day. We were the best we could be and really tried hard in all events! We enjoyed cheering our teammates on in their races and had a fantastic team spirit!

Y4 Dalby Forest Field Trip

Yesterday, Y4 embarked on their field trip to ‘The Great Forest of Yorkshire’ Dalby Forest! What a fantastic day we had! Children, you were fantastic and were all amazing geographers and ambassadors for the school. Here’s how the day went:

Sniverdale Rabbit Run Hike – 2.2miles.

The purpose of our hike was to compete a native forest with what we have learned about the rainforests of the world. Children identified the types of trees and quickly found that the area of the forest we were in was predominantly evergreen. We veered off the track and explored the forest floor to find that little grew there and the understory and canopy was pretty much non-existent. Children enjoyed feeling the spongy masses of needles under their feet! On the hike, we also found an area of trees which was cut down. After initial cries of ‘DEFORESTATION!’, we soon learned that this was a larch planation. Counting the rings of the trees we learned that they were planted around 60-70 years ago and were now being cropped for timber and more would be planted in their place. Relief!

Enjoying the sights and sounds of the beautiful forest.

Field Studies

The next part of our trip was some field studies. We had a number of activities to complete. First, there was some measuring of trees and calculating their age and heights. We also samples leaves and discussed the different trees produce seeds and reproduce. Children were also very excited complete our field studies in Dalby Beck which runs along the dale. In the water, children measured the water depth, the speed of he river and investigate the river bed. This was very enjoyable but quite cold!

Farai with a river bed sample!

Kye measuring the depth with a stick which was then measured against a tape measure.

Lacie, Sophia, Olivia, Fatima and Noah sampled different areas of the river bed and found different materials from large rocks to fine sand.

Year 4 Dalby Forest 2022! Well done children and thank you for a fantastic day out!
