The world is a special place

This week in RE we discussed why the world is a special place.

We recalled how Hindus believe Brahma created the world and how Christians believe God created the world. We think Hindus and Christians think the world is a special place because of how they believe it was created.

In our class discussions, we also decided the world is a special place for many different reasons.

Some of us thought the world is a special place because it’s where we live. Some also thought it is a special place because there are lots of important things in the world.

London’s burning

This week in music Year 1 have been singing the nursery rhyme ‘London’s Burning’.

We found out the song is about the great fire of London from 1666.

We have found singing in rounds very hard but enjoyed playing about with this song.

We sang in an echo because we noticed each line of the song repeated itself like and echo in a tunnel.

We also had fun making new lyrics up. We made our own verse.

Hull is calling, Hull is calling

See the Humber bridge, see the Humber bridge

Go to town, go to town”

The United Kingdom

In Geography this week, Year 2 have been learning about the four countries that make up the United Kingdom. They can now locate these on a map and label the surrounding seas. They have also been learning about the four capital cities.

We have learned that Queen Elizabeth II lives in London and we will be learning more about London next week!

positional language

In geography this week year 1 have ben talking about positional language.

We know lots of words like next to, in front of, behind, above and below.

We used these words to tell our friends where we wanted them to stand on a grid with pictures of Beatrix Potter characters.

We had lots of fun giving instructions to each other and then checking the instructions had been followed correctly.

Stand above the start

Stand next to Peter Rabbit.

We also looked at a compass and had a go at giving instruction to each other to move around the grid using North, South, East and West.

Take a step North from the start.

Stretching our learning

This week in PSHE, Year 1 had lots of fun.

We started our lesson with playing pass the smile. We really enjoyed copying the smile and then passing it around our circle. Smiling at each other made us feel happy.

We then listened to our special chime. This makes us feel relaxed and ready for the lesson. We listen to the sound until it stops. We hear it more clearly when we close our eyes.

We all tried to stretch ourselves as high as we can. Some of us wanted to stretch as high as the trees!

This week year 1 were challenged to make a stretch flower. They had to use skills they had not used before together with skills some of us are still perfecting.

We had to colour, cut and wind things to make a stretchy flower.

The first thing we had to do was colour our flower before we cut it out.

Then we attached a pipe cleaner to the back before we wound the pipe cleaner a pencil to make our flower stretchy.

We felt really proud of our flowers and learning new skills.

Singing in a round!

In Year 1 we have been appraising nursery rhymes with a focus on where they originated from. Last week we looked at the song ‘Hot Cross Buns’. We discovered the song was more than 300 years old and was used by bakers to help sell their delicious buns. We performed our song in a round. At first we found this extremely tricky as we would sing each other’s parts. As a result, for this week Miss Dale sang one part and the children sang the other. Here was the final outcome.

This week we were determined to keep practicing singing in a round. We appraised another traditional nursery rhyme ‘Row, row, row your boat’. We then looked at more additions to the song that have been invented over the years. We agreed our favourite was the crocodile one so we decided to perform this in a round and WE DID IT! So proud Year 1, well done!

Gymnastics

Year 2’s indoor unit this half term is Gymnastics. Today they have been learning to sequence a set of movements. They can now balance, roll and jump.

Great job year 2!

After looking at different uses for materials last week some children were discussing which materials were best for outdoor seating. we decided to use this conversation to create an investigation. Children thought about their prior learning of material properties and uses to make a prediction about which material would be best suited to make an outdoor bench.

Children drew a scientific diagram of there equipment before testing four different materials for strength by adding weight and pressure to each one. They then poured water over each material to see what happened when the material got wet. We then tested the strength of each material again.

Children then wrote about their findings. Some children discovered that metal was the best material whilst others though plastic was a good alternative.

There were lots of discussions about all of the materials. A great afternoon for our scientists in Year 2!

Year 2 have been observing and classifying Materials

Our new unit in Year 2 is Materials. We have been looking at different materials and their properties. This week we went outside to look for different materials. We then thought about why some materials are used outside more often than others.

None of us knew what a binary tree was at the start of our lesson so we were excited to learn.

Next, we started by thinking of yes/no questions to ask about a selection of animals.

Then, we kept answering the questions to create new groups and sort the animals.

Finally, we thought of our own yes/no questions to input on our IPADS.
