Why do I have senses?

To explore our 5 senses we explored each one carefully. We first started with touch.

The children first discussed that we use our hands to tell if something is soft, rough, smooth etc. To explore this we passed round different objects.

I then asked the question “Can we only feel with our hands?”. A lot of the children first agreed and said yes. Then we discovered that you can still tell if something is soft/rough if it touches your skin on your arm/leg.

Smell

We then explored our sense of smell. The children could identify that we use our nose to smell.

We smelled vinegar which some children said was disgusting but most children loved the smell of the room air freshener.

Taste

Next it was time to explore taste. We tasted salt and sugar first with our eyes open. We talked about how clever our tongue is and how everybody likes different things. We then did a comparative test to see if we closed our eyes, do our taste buds grow stronger? Some children agreed it did, but some said it tasted the same.

Sight

The fourth sense we investigated was sight. We discussed how some people may need help with their vision and that is why people might wear glasses. The children in the class were very excited to show off their glasses to the class.

Eyes help us to see the world around us. We played a quick game of classroom eye spy!

We then turned all the lights off in the classroom and shut all the blinds to see how amazing our eyes are at adjusting to the dark.

Hearing

The final sense we explored was hearing. The children knew we used our ears to hear and that just like sight, some people may need extra help so that they can hear. We discussed all the different things we use in school that we listen and respond to everyday!

What are bodies and what can they do?

Our first lesson of the unit ‘animals including humans’ we focused on the enquiry ‘What are bodies and what can they do?’.

To start our lesson we sang the song ‘head, shoulders, knees and toes‘.

We then drew round Arios so we could then label human body parts. We had lots of fun!

Here are what some of the children said:

“We have a heart to pump blood around our body“- Buddy

“We have eyes so we can see“- Jessica

“We have a skeleton which is made of bones to make sure we do not look like jelly”- Neive

We then continued our learning through our continuous provision. We made and labelled the human body for our science working wall.

Here was one Olivia made!

Exploring human and physical features

Today Year 1 became geographers and got out and about within the school grounds!

We started our lesson by exploring what the terms human features and physical features mean. We learnt that a human feature is anything that is made by people such as buildings, bridges and roads, and that a physical feature is something that is natural such as mountains, rivers and forests.

We then took the information we had learnt and went outside to explore our school grounds to see what human and physical features we could identify.

|Year 1 RE

Year 1 have been thinking about what the word belonging means.

We might belong to schools, families, groups and faiths … we looked at the different symbols that represent these.

Some of us belong to different clubs, but we all belong to Christopher Pickering Primary School.

We looked at the Christian, Muslim and Sikh faiths… how they all have places of worship and a God that they pray to.

We discussed the Christian church, Olivia went to church for her baby brothers christening, she remembers that the vicar “made a cross with the water on his head”.

We looked at different places of worship, the children thought the Muslim mosque  looked very fancy, some recognised a Christian Church and we discovered that Sikhs worshiped at a Gurdwara.

We spoke about praying, Mason knew that “Mrs Marson says a prayer at the end of assembly, we put our hands together and close our eyes”.

We thought of when we might pray, if you’re sad, missing your Dad or if some one in your family is ill. We all shared some special prayers together.

We also looked at clothing that different faiths wear, learning that Sikh boys cover their heads with a Romala and that Muslim girls wear a Hijab.

We looked at the similarities and differences between different faiths. The children discovered that both Christian and Sikh children have places of worship where they can go to pray to their own God.

People may have different beliefs and Gods that they worship, we may wear different clothes and pray in different ways in different places, but everyone is special.

Year 1 Computing

This week, Year 1 had their first use of our school laptop computers, but first they needed to be able to identify the screen, keyboard and mouse/trackpad.

They enjoyed learning how to turn on and log in to a laptop computer using their QR codes.

All of the children had a turn at developing their trackpad skills by completing a puzzle program. They needed to use the trackpad to grab and drag each puzzle piece… this proved a little tricky and it’s a skill that we will be working on developing more next week.

Numbers to 100

Year 2 have been exploring numbers to 100 in Maths. Their Maths unit is Place Value and they have been learning to read, write and represent number to 100.  Here they are  representing two- digit numbers in different ways.

They have also learned to partition these numbers into tens and ones. Have a look at their work!

Year 1 Computing

Year 1 were excited to start their Computing lessons this week, more especially to get their hands on the laptops… but first we had to find out what Technology is.

We shared thoughts about what the word ‘technology’ actually means and we discovered it is anything made by people to help us.

The children then searched our classroom to find items of technology.  The children were able to find many things and say how they help us… Chester told us that “pencils help us write and draw”, while Ivy said “the globe shows us the world and where places are” and all the children were surprised when Elio said his coat was technology as it helps to keep him dry and warm!

Technology is absolutely everywhere in our classroom, so we had to go outside to find things that aren’t technology… trees and the sky aren’t technology as they are not made by people.

We had a look at a range of maps of our local area. As a class, we looked at Digimaps and found where Hull is in the UK, and where our school and local area is in Hull. We then wrote a set of directions from our school, around our local area and back again, our using our knowledge of the compass points.

We then went for a walk around our local area, following our directions. We added landmarks, signs and buildings to our maps.

When we arrived back at school, we improved our set of directions by adding extra details, such as landmarks we went by and street names and signs.

layering

This week in art we have started to create our own seascape based on the work of John Ward.

We have spent the last few weeks looking at how John Ward uses cold colours and we practised creating tints and tones with these colours.

We then spent time discussing how using different medias in our art can create  layer and texture. We practised this technique using oil pastels, paint and PVA glue. After seeing how these medias work together we were ready to create our own seascapes using these medias.

We have started our own artwork by using oil pastels. We have thought about the lines we need and the shading we can add. We have also thought about how we can use paint and PVA glue to create texture.

Our first layer is beginning to look like the start of some fantastic seascape pictures. We cannot wait to add our paint and PVA next week.

Let’s sing together

This week in music, Year 2 have been listening to ‘Let’s Sing Together’.

We began our lesson by appraising our piece of music. This week the music made us feel a little sleepy. It was slow and calm, there was gentle instruments in the music and a soft drum was being tapped. The music mad us all feel relaxed and we wanted to hear more.

The music we performed this week was called ‘Let’s Sing Together’. this music woke us all back up. The music had a quicker beat and the words were very repetitive. We were able to sing the sing, following the words on the screen, really quickly. We loved the words and wanted to try and sing this song differently.

We wanted to try and sing this song in a round as it was repeated. We remembered how to sing in a round from Year 1 and enjoyed this.

We sang ‘Let’s Sing Together’ in a round, each table starting at a different point to create a class performance.

We hope you like our final performance.
