tints and tones

Over the past 2 weeks, Year 2 have been looking at tints and tones in our art lessons.

We began by looking at seascapes created by John Ward. We discussed how his art uses cold colours. We recalled the different cold colours we had used in Year 1 and identified these in the painting by John Ward.

We then used some cold colours to create our own colour palates. We added white paint to our original paint to create tints and we added grey to create tones.

We then looked at the seascapes created by Nicholas Hadeed, these used warm colours. We again recalled the different warm colours we used in Year 1.

We used warm colours to create our own palate of warm tints and tones. Again, we added white paint to create tints and grey paint to create tones.

meeting with the local councillor

On Friday, our school councillors and house captains had an exciting meeting with our local councillor – Councillor Henry. Our children had the opportunity to have their voices heard by the councillor about what they do within Christopher Pickering to support the school. Councillor Henry shared some useful tips about how we can work together with her to incorporate British Values (even more than we already do!) into our school.

After our meeting, our house captains took the pleasure of showing Councillor Henry around our school, gardens and playground. They took ownership and developed leadership with the help of our special visitor!

PSHE Jigsaw Year 2 – Keeping Secrets

Today children learned what a secret is. We played ‘Whisper or Mime’

We discussed ‘good’ secrets, like birthday presents and nice surprises, and ‘worry’ secrets – secrets that may make you feel sad, confused or nervous.

We discussed the importance of telling somebody if we had a secret that we didn’t feel comfortable keeping.

We thought about who we would tell our ‘worry’ secret to.

The Music Man

In music this week, Year 2 have really enjoyed learning the song ‘Music Man’.

We begun by appraising our piece of music. The music made us feel happy and we all wanted to smile. We could hear lots of instruments including guitars, pianos, drums and saxophones. We were not sure what a saxophone was to start with but we discovered this together and loved the sounds it made. We knew a saxophone was played because it sang it in the song.

We sang the song, following the words on the screen. We loved this song and we could hear the beat really. Lots of us were tapping the table with our hands and tapping our feet on the floor the first time we sung.

We were able to improvise playing musical instruments to the song as we sang. We played a saxophone, a trombone and a drum as well as others.

Once we knew the song well we became composers. We used the notes we know on the glockenspiel to create our own composition based on ‘Music Man’.

We decided on a 4 note composition that complemented the music we listened to then we got to play it to the music.

We performed our 4 notes to the class and we loved being performers.

Why is the world special?

In year 1 this term, the children are exploring why the world is special.

For our first lesson, the children looked at some of the natural wonders of the world and discussed why these are special.

We then explored the school grounds and identified things which they thought were wonderful.

In the second lesson, the children listened to, appraised and learnt the song ‘What a wonderful world’ by Louise Armstrong.

They also suggested ideas to keep the world precious.

Frank commented that ‘We shouldn’t litter as it might kill animals’.

Cody suggested ‘We need to put everything in the bin’.

Amelia said ‘Trees are like lungs so we need to tidy up.’

Rellie explained ‘The word precious means we need to look after something’.

Year 2 Wow Day!

For our Year 2 Summer Wow Day, children looked at photos of the Titanic. They then carefully sketched the outline of the Titanic and shaded it in using pencil.

After that, children looked at pieces of art work of the Titanic. We focussed on the beautiful sunsets and black silhouettes on different pieces of art, They then created their own backgrounds using oil pastels.

Then, the children drew the outline of the Titanic on paper and filled it in using black or grey oil pastels to create the silhouette of the ship. They cut these out and stuck them onto their backgrounds. They were extremely pleased with the outcome of their pieces of art.

Final art piece

This term Year 2 have built their art work up to create a final piece portrait of Samuel Pepys.

We began by looking at painting of Samuel Pepys so that we could sketch our own version.

We continued by drawing on our ability to create secondary colours with paint. We used the influence Julian Opie, who we have been looking at this term, before block filling our sketches.

Our portraits of Samuel Pepys look very much like the pop art that Julian Opie is famous for creating. We have completed our final piece of art work by adding pen detail. This had made our portraits more detailed and we have added texture to the final portrait.

We are very proud of our work and we held a walking exhibit for our peers to view all portraits that were created.

All around the world

Year 2 have continued with practising our notes on the glockenspiel this week in music.

We have listened to a piece of music called ‘All Around the World’ and we have tried to replicate the beat with the notes we know.

We began by appraising the piece of music before discussing how it made us feel. This piece of music was calm and soothing and made us feel relaxed. We talked about how we could gently tap the notes on the glockenspiel to accompany the piece of music in  a calming manner.

We liked this piece of music because it was soft and made us feel a little sleepy.

First the children looked at books that are special to them and identified their favourite stories. Next we discussed the messages these books can teach us.

Then we discussed why religious books are sacred. The children learnt that the word sacred means something is special and connected to God. We looked at the story of ‘The loaves and fishes’ from the Bible. We then looked at ‘The crying camel’ from the Qur’an. We compared the messages that both of these books convey.

In the next lesson, the children had a discussion about why music is important to worship. We then listened to music from different religions and compared them. The children concluded that songs tell stories and music makes us happy.
