soup

As part of our Design and Technology unit in Year 3 this term, we are creating healthy soups that the fishermen could take on trips with them.

Before we can create our soups we have talked about healthy ingredients and what we could put in our soups. As part of the preparation to make soup we talked about how to cut the vegetables we are going to use.

We have practised our cutting skills this week in preparation for making our soup.

We all had the opportunity to practise both our claw and bridge grips to make sure we could cut our vegetables safely and securely.

We also had to decide which vegetables would be good for our soup. We discussed seasonality and which vegetables are available in the autumn season in England. We also tasted some vegetables so we could decide on which flavours we would like in our soup.

To create our soup we worked collaboratively to decide on a recipe including the vegetables we would use and the stock that would create the base of the soup.

When the soup was cooked we tasted and evaluated it to see if we had met the design brief and created a healthy soup for a fisherman.

Y6 Design and Technology: Truffle Making – Focused Practical

Year 6 are in the process of preparing to be chocolatiers this week to create a produce (truffles) with a purpose (a gift) for a person of their choosing.

This week we took part in a focused practical activity and observed the process of how to make the truffles using a simple recipe. With a little assistance and guidance from Miss Stewart, some children weighed, snapped, crumbled and added the necessary ingredients to create a batch of delicious truffles, which were shared and devoured before being evaluated.

Our next step is to be the chocolatier and independently create and design our own truffles so watch this space…

HUB 2: FESTIVE BISCUIT DECORATING

In HUB 2 this week, we demonstrated our creative flair and decorated some homemade shortbread biscuits with a range of Christmas themes alongside some of our own personal interest.

We persevered, focused and carefully concentrated on the task to ensure that our designs were delectable masterpieces.

And voila…from Christmas Trees, Christmas Stars and Snowflakes to Sonic, Batman, Spiderman and the Joker, we certainly enjoyed the task before devouring and sharing our fine creations with our loved ones.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Y5H discussed the emotional and physical impact of spreading rumours and calling people names in our Jigsaw lesson today.

We began the lesson by playing the game ‘WHISPERS’ around the class to show how a simple statement can be altered, changed or become misconstrued.  This activity helped the children identify that rumours are often stories which are circulated that are not always the true as they can be altered in the way they interpretated by the receiver.

We then discussed and debated a scenario based upon a girl called ‘Carol’ who had started a new school but felt isolated by a group of girls as they would not accept her as part of the group and they began to give her nasty looks. Carol then began receiving anonymous text messages calling her nasty names which resulted in Carol feeling sad, lonely and worried about attending school.  From this, the Y5 children identified what Carol both should and should not do to help her situation:

  • Speak to a trusted adult (Parent/Carer, Teacher, Friend or a trusted relative) – Never keep it to yourself or ignore when someone is being unkind to you
  • Call Childline (0800 1111) or the NSPCC helpline (0808 800 5000)
  • Show the text messages to a trusted adult  – Never delete them as the situation may not just go away – the messages need to be reported
  • Never retaliate as the situation could become worse
  • Be an Upstander not a Bystander – if you see or hear that someone is being unkind to another person – SPEAK UP and TELL A TRUSTED ADULT
  • If the situation escalates, call the non-emergency number 101 for help and support

The children then created a ‘Snakes and Ladders’ board game related to Carol’s scenario highlighting 4 things that we should do to help a situation like Carol’s as well as 4 things that we should not do as they could make the situation worse.

We are looking forward to playing each other’s games next week!

HUB 2 P.E – AUTUMN TERM

The HUB 2 boys have been enjoying a range of activities with Brad and Callum from Tigers Trust during this Autumn Term’s P.E sessions.

We have been demonstrating the great ‘SPORTSPERSONSHIP’ values of  RESPECT, TEAMWORK, RESILIENCE, PERSEVERANCE and TOLERANCE while participating in a range of games such as Bogey Tig, Stuck in the Mud, What Time is it Mr Wolf, Monkey-Ball Tig,  Dodgeball and Penalty Shoot-out.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Brad and Callum for all your hard work this term!

Year 5 Enterprise event at Sirius Academy

Year 5 were invited to Sirius Academy to take part in a business and enterprise themed event which provided pupils with the opportunity to cultivate fundamental entrepreneurial skills and business acumen. The children planned, created and developed their own Safari Park, including advertising materials. They had to manage a budget and make decisions about what would be the best decision for their businesses.

We had lots of winners on the day and all of the children enjoyed visiting their local secondary school for the first time.

White Ribbon Day – Year 5

White Ribbon Day is a global campaign to end violence against women and girls.

For White Ribbon Day this year, all of the children came to school wearing something white – whether that be their clothing or a small accessory. The children took part in a whole-school assembly to find out what White Ribbon Day is trying to do, and later in the day they completed some work in their classes. All pupils make a pledge:

Kind hands, kind feet, kind words to all.

We are a no violence school.

We respect each other.

Each child also wrote their own personal promise on a piece of paper which we then connected to make a whole-class paper chain of promises. This will then form a whole-school promise.

We learned about which organisations can help people if they are experiencing bullying or abuse and all vowed to #speakup to #changethestory.

Year 5 Fire Talk

Year 5 had a visitor from Humberside Fire and Rescue today.

They spoke to the children about fire safety – identifying potential hazards in the home and what to do if they discover a fire.

We learned to STOP. DROP. ROLL. if our clothing were to catch fire.

We know to call 999 and ask for the fire service.

If we cannot leave our home, we know that we should try and gather all our family in one room and close the door. We should get as low as possible as toxic smoke rises and we should try and block the bottom of the door with a rolled up blanket to keep smoke out.

We were also spoken to about arson and the consequences of this.

The talk finished with a discussion about the dangers of open water and that no matter how tempting it may be on a hot summer’s day or when it’s cold and looks frozen-over, we should never enter the water as there are many hidden dangers.

Y5 EXPRESSIONS OF FAITH – Raksha Bandhan

Year 5 have explored the many ways in which children of faith communities express their religious beliefs through rituals, traditional dress and celebrations this term.

The Hindu festival of Raksha Bandhan allowed the children to demonstrate their creative flare by creating ‘Friendship’ bracelets for their talk partner.

This wonderful faith celebration takes part in August in the month of Sravana in the Hindu lunar calendar and is celebrated in many different ways around the world.  One of the most common traditions is where sisters make a bracelet which they tie around the wrist of their brother; and upon receipt of the special gift the brother wishes their sister good health and good fortune.

Our own creations allowed the children to celebrate their bond of friendship and express their gratitude for one another. We discovered that ‘Racksha’ means ‘protection’ and that ‘Bandhan’ means ‘tie’.

Year 2 – PSHE

Year 2 have started their second Jigsaw piece in PSHE –  “Celebrating Differences”.

Our main learning objectives this term will be:-

  • Understanding that sometimes people make assumptions (stereotypes) about boys and girls.
  • Understanding that its okay to be different from other people.
  • Explaining some ways that we are different.
  • Understanding that bullying is sometimes about difference.

This week we looked at assumptions about boys and girls (stereotypes) and some ways in which we are all similar and to feel good about this.

All the children self-selected a partner and chatted to find out four things that they have in common or are similar … we spoke about eye/hair colour, hobbies, things they like doing, favourite foods, things they are good at, similarities in their families, etc.

The children enjoyed finding out things about each other, each others likes and dislikes and we’re excited to discover some of their similarities.

Then, they recorded these in their books, along with a ‘we are special because…’ sentence.
