Year 2 have been learning how to add and subtract a tens number. They used base 10 to represent their tens and ones.
They noticed a pattern and learned the rule that when adding a tens number the ones always stay the same!

In Year 3 we are learning how to add and subtract 3 digit numbers using the column method.
We have been using manipulatives to help us combine numbers to add and then take away amounts using subtraction. We all had our own HTO place value grid and have been using counters to represent hundred, tens and ones,
We then carries out some pictorial calculations then abstract – we have been making sure that all of our ones are in the same column, all our tens are in the same column and then all our hundreds are in the same column.
We are becoming fluent at this and are now using our knowledge to solve problems.

We have had another lovely week in F1 learning all about the story ‘Owl Babies’.
In Maths we have been singing a song called ‘5 Little Owls’ and learning to count down from 5.
This week the children have also been learning the nursery rhyme ‘Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall’. We now know the songs ‘Twinkle Twinkle little star’, ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ and ‘Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall’.
On Thursday we celebrated Harvest Festival. The children practised walking sensibly to the hall and we had an assembly talking all about where our food is made. The children also learned the song ‘Big Red Combine Harvester’ and enjoyed joining in with the actions.
Next week we will be learning all about Autumn. We will be reading the story ‘The Leaf Thief’.
For home learning this week the children have been asked to collect some Autumn treasures over the weekend and bring them to school on Monday.
We hope you have a lovely weekend,
F1 Staff.
During this unit on Place Value, we have made great use of tools to help us represent numbers, partition, expand and find 1/10 more and less than a given number.
We have grown in confidence to explain our calculating using sentence stems to help us structure our answers.
