Y2 Yoga and Mindfulness

Year 2 have started a new unit in our indoor PE this week; Yoga and Mindfulness.

Today we have learned some basic yoga positions and played some games using these.

We can’t wait for next week.

Elizabeth Fry biographies

Year 6 have continued to demonstrate a motivated and dedicated attitude to their learning whilst studying from home this week.

For our Crime and Punishment topic, we have started to explore the Victorian prisons and how Elizabeth Fry had a huge impact on prison living conditions.

Year 6 have watched videos and carried out research to discover more about this significant woman and were fascinated by her kind nature and determination!

UK Parliament online workshop

We learned so much in Year 6 after our online workshop which was delivered by the Houses of Parliament education team!

It was fascinating to find out more about how the Houses of Parliament work and also some of the history behind the establishment.

We were amazed to learn about how laws are made and that it can sometimes take up to a year of ‘ping pong’ before a bill is passed!

What a great session to support us with our Crime and Punishment topic.

Year 6 Home Learning Awards

Wow, what a fantastic awards assembly Year 6 had to celebrate all of their hard work during the lockdown period!

It was fabulous to see all of our dedicated pupils united once again in celebration of each other’s successes as we shared hundreds of certificates which they have worked so hard to earn over the past 2 months!

There were countless Purple Mash, Reading Plus, and TT Rockstars certificates handed out to both children who have worked on their learning from home and to those who have been in school. Weals celebrated and gave special recognition to individuals who had shown outstanding effort across different home learning platforms.

Our top 3 ‘Purple Mash Reward Earners’ – Thomas, Charlie and Chloe earned over 100 individual rewards each for their amazing home learning work which they submitted!

Our Top 3 TT Rockstars Coin Earners

Our Top 3 Reading Plus Achievers

We would like to congratulate all children for showing resilience and determination during a very difficult time in their learning, and of course a huge thank you to parents for all of your continued support!

British Science Week 2021!

Year 6 have taken part in many weird and wonderful science experiments this week in support of ‘British Science Week 2021’!

It was a brilliant way to celebrate all children being back in school and participate in hands-on, fun activities.

We have experimented with cress, candles, and balloons to name just a few!

Here are a selection of photographs showing some of the fun we got up to!

World Book Day 2021!

Year 6 had a fantastic day celebrating World Book Day 2021! Lots of children, both in school and at home, took part in various activities across the day.

The highlight was tuning in to ‘The Masked Reader’ and trying to guess the teachers who were reading extracts from their favourite books. Leila did fantastic, scoring 8/9, and was one of our prize winners of the day.

We also loved crafting and creating our potato book characters! Here are just some of the ones our talented children have made, can you guess who any of them are?

Crime and Punishment!

Year 6 have got off to a great start this half term with their topic ‘Crime and Punishment’. We have loved looking back at how life would have been very different during the Anglo-Saxon and Viking period, and started to explore what life during the Tudor times would have been like this week. We learned it was classed as a crime to be homeless and the Tudor vagrants would often be whipped, or even sentenced to death, if they were found on the streets!

In this lesson, we studied a woodcutting primary source of evidence which illustrated a Tudor village scene with a vagrant being whipped and lead through the streets on a leash. We then made reasonable judgements and used our inference skills to explore what we could see happening in the woodcutting.

Sikh Symbols

Year 2 have been learning about Sikh beliefs and Sikh symbols.

We have learned about the 5K’s.

This is the Kara.

This is the Kirpan.

This week we learned about the holy book, Guru Granth Sahib. We learned that the book is worshipped like a king. A Chauri is waved over the book when it is been read. We had a look at a Chauri in class.

Christmas Light Boxes – Y4 D&T Project

Over the last few weeks, Y4 have been working hard on creating their Christmas Light boxes for this term’s Design and Technology project.

Investigate

The journey started with investigating light-up Christmas items which are very popular the time of the year. The children loved taking these apart and making links between components, design and materials. They identified the key parts they would need in their boxes: a switch, wires, a bulb and batteries.

Focussed Practical Task

One tricky part of our project was creating the box which would hold all of their components and be able to display their design. We spent a lesson focussing on how to use nets to create three dimensional shapes. Children created a wide variety of shapes in varying difficulty. Some were very challenging and were tricky to assemble!

Focussed Practical Task: Making Nets

Design

The next step was to design their boxes. Children made a plan drawing of the inside and outside of their net. They also make a wiring diagram so they new how much wire they would need and where their components would go. They also finalised a design for a switch using split pins and paper clips.

Ready to make: Summer with her final design!

Making

The next step was very exciting –  the children were finally ready to make their light boxes! They uses scissors to cut out their nets, used pencils, felt tip and pen to decorate it, electrical pliers to cut and strip the wires and clue and tape to fasten their materials together.

The finished product

The Light Boxes turned out fantastic! The children all worked really hard on them and we are super proud of what they have achieved. As with any process, some parts were harder from others and the children have fed back some small changes we will make for the next children who will make these, but overall it was a huge success!

Phoebe’s snowman light-box ready for Christmas!

Mr Morgan’s class were very please with their work!

Home-made switches working perfectly!

If you’d like to make one of our boxes, follow our ‘How to’ video below!

Hexapod non-chronological reports

Year 6 have been working extremely hard over the past 2 weeks studying hexapods (creatures who inhabit the planet Pandora). They have become experts within this sci-fi genre and have really developed their technical vocabulary and terminology. As their final pieces, each child chose a hexapod to focus on and wrote up a detailed non-chronological reports about them.

We are very proud of the work they have produced and are now eager to get started on writing our fictional stories which are also going to be set on Pandora!
