F2 Orchard Visit

Wow! What a lovely morning F2 had at our local Pickering Community Orchard!

The weather held out for us and we definitely felt like Spring was on it’s way! We loved our leisurely walk round our community and looked for signs of Spring all around us!

When we arrived at the Orchard we were greeted and shown around the grounds… through the allotments where we spotted all types of different vegetables! Even some from this terms story ‘Oliver’s Vegetables!

We took a woodland stroll and spotted lots of signs of Spring- flowers beginning to bloom, animals beginning to emerge and the whole garden become more alive! We named daffodils, moss, bird nests, ladybirds, woodlice, spiders, earwigs and identified some local trees!

We also loved exploring the Orchard, where the apples are not quite ready yet, but the trees are beginning to bloom! Feeling the branches, trunks and leaves was great fun and we loved thinking of words to describe the different textures.

We were very intrigued at the bee hives, where the Orchard make their very own honey!  We talked about the process of how the bees make the honey and could see the bees leaving and entering the hive… busy at work!

We can’t wait to visit the Orchard soon… for some of our Forest School sessions….watch this space!

The Hub

The boys had a lovely morning playing with all the activities in the Hub. They both took it in turns with the cars and helped each other with the jigsaws. Hunter really loves the jigsaws. Tyler enjoyed his puzzle and was so excited that he could do it all by himself.

The swing was good fun and so was climbing on the tiger. The boys  learnt how to share, be patient and have their turn.

We  then went outside for some fresh air. They played together on the equipment. Hunter loved the voice horn and could not believe that he could hear Tyler if he put his ear to it.

The Hub

This week the children have been investigating our new pet house box. They have been hiding inside with all their animals. All the children loved getting inside and climbing on the top. Mrs Rowbottom got inside and Kojeen fed her through the holes with his toys.

The children have enjoyed playing in the Hub this week. All the bricks were put into colours and the boys made a huge wall . The Pop up Pirates game made us all jump when we won as we all took it in turns to play. We all did great sharing.

What a lovely happy week we all have had sharing ,caring and turn taking.

Gruffalo paintings

F1 children listened to the description of the Gruffalo and then painted pictures of him.  They had to remember his ‘terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws’.  They tried to paint his ‘knobbly knees, and turned out toes, and a poisonous wart on the end of his nose’.  Can you spot his that ‘his eyes are orange, his tongue is black’ and that ‘he has purple prickles all over his back’?  What super artists.

Tree planting

Mr Wileman helped us plant trees today.  He told us what we had to do to plant them.  Although lots of the F1 children thought that they were just ‘little sticks’, we looked at the roots and talked about what they will need to help them grow.  Mr Wileman also gave us special plastic ‘blankets’ to keep them warm whilst they grown.  Alex couldn’t believe how small they were.  Ivy N thought that when they are all in Year 6 the trees will be as tall as Mrs Silverwood!

We also saw the biggest worms we had EVER seen!

F1 enjoy shadows

We have joined in Science Week by exploring shadows.  Mrs Kenington made some fabulous puppets, from our Gruffalo story, which we have enjoyed exploring, especially during Breakfast Club.  The children really enjoyed listening to and joining in with the story.

Gruffalo food tasting!

F1 had a chat about what foods they could remember from our Gruffalo story…

“Roasted fox”, said Forrest.  So we tried some!

Keigha wasn’t impressed with the idea of roasted fox, “It’s disgusting, I’m not trying that!”  Ivan thought differently though, “I like it!”

Warran remembered that there was also scrambled snake in the story.  But what would it be like?  Myles said, “I think scrambled snake would be green because the snake is green.”  However, it wasn’t actually green!

“It’s so good!” said Ivy N with surprise.  “It tastes like pasta,” said Violet.

Isabella remembered about the owl ice cream too.  Keigha thought, “Owl ice cream would be sweet.  It would be grey.”

Lottie and Luna both said, “It’s good.”  Reuben thought, “It’s yummy!”  Alex said, “It’s cold.”

Some of the children tried everything.  Some were pleasantly surprised!

Tyler said, “Fox?  Carrots!”

He was right!  The teachers confessed that the roast fox was actually roast carrots, the scrambled snake was pasta and the owl ice cream was frozen yogurt.

“It wasn’t a good pretend!  I thought it was roasted fox!” exclaimed Violet.

“You tricked us!” realised Phoebe.

It has been great fun though and we were really proud of everyone for trying new food.
