What are bodies and what can they do?

Our first lesson of the unit is ‘animals including humans’ and we focused on the enquiry ‘What are bodies and what can they do?’.

To start our lesson we sang the song ‘head, shoulders, knees and toes‘.

We then drew round around Elijah and Reuben so we could then label human body parts. We had lots of fun!

Here are what some of the children said:

“We have a heart to pump blood around our body“- Mylie

“We have eyes so we can see“- Isabel

“We have a skeleton which is made of bones to make sure we can stand up and don’t fall over like jelly ”- Myles

“Our skin keeps protects everything in our body from falling out” Matilda

We then continued our learning through our continuous provision. We made and labelled the human body for our science working wall.

Where do sacred stories come from?

During this lesson the children learned the meaning of the word ‘sacred’ which is a religious kind of ‘special’.  We learnt that different religions have sacred texts which include great stories in them, that are shared within their community. This is so people learn the importance of being kind, respectful as well as having a sense of belonging.

I reminded the children of our school’s RESPECT values:-

Resilient, Enthusiastic, Safe, Perseverance, Empathetic, Confident and Tolerant.                We discussed the meaning of each of these values and how these are common themes throughout the stories we read as a class.

The first story we looked at was the Christian story ‘The Good Samaritan’. The children knew that this story could be found in the bible and enjoyed learning about this.

The next story we looked at was the ‘The crying camel’ which is an Islamic story found in the Quran. Arios said he loved learning about this story because he is Muslim and reads the Quran at home.

The final story we looked can be found in the Torah which was ‘The story of Moses’. This is a Jewish scared story.

The children could easily identify which symbol and story belonged to each sacred book.

Year 1- Computing

Our new unit in computing is “Creating media – Digital writing”

Lesson 1- Exploring the Keyboard

This is the first lesson in which Year 1 have experienced using a computer to create and manipulate text. In this lesson we familiarised ourselves with word processor and thought about how they might use this application in the future. The children also identified the different keys, before adding text to their page by pressing keys on a keyboard.

Lesson 2- Adding and Removing Text

In this lesson, the children continued to familiarise themselves with word processor and how they can interact with the computer using a keyboard. We focused on adding text as well as exploring more of the keys found on a keyboard (such as the numbers). Finally, we began to use the backspace button to remove text from the computer and learned how to create a finger space using the space bar key. We also briefly touched on how to do a capital letter using the shift button.
