Year 6 PE

This term in Year 6, we have been looking at football and orienteering in PE. In orienteering, we have been warm up games such as compass shark attack and doing object coded courses. For example, in the object coded courses, we will get into teams and be given an object to touch each one of. In football, we have been looking at attacking, defending and using our team skills to discuss tactics. For example, one week we will do attacking skills, then we will do defending skills the next week. At the end of the unit, we will be competing in a tournament. Everyone is enjoying this new topic very much. Have an amazing half term.

Sincerely,

Year 6 Project Evolve – Online relationships

In year 6 we have been looking at online relationships and how to be our best selves online. We discussed how sharing things online can have both positive and negative consequences and that not all consequences are intended. Through learning about respecting others online, we were able to give ways in which we could conduct ourselves to make sure others felt respected. Boundaries were a key message in our discussion and many children were able to remember that you should respect other people’s decisions even if you don’t agree with them (I can’t play as it’s tea time. Response Ok – so don’t keep asking them etc.).

Year 6 Bike ability

This week, Year 6 pupils have taken part in bike ability. They have learned the different positions (secondary position and primary position) and understand what the different positions tell other drivers or cyclists on the road. They understand that they are telling other cyclists or drivers on the road to over take them in secondary position and that they are telling other cyclists or drivers to give them at bit of space and wait for them to do whatever they are doing. They have all enjoyed bike ability very much and now know how to be safe when riding a bike on the road. They are grateful to their teachers for bike ability and for teaching them everything they have learned.

Y6 Passive and Active voice

On Wednesday afternoon in Year 6, we played an active and passive voice game. It was a fun way of learning how to change a sentence from the passive voice to the active voice or from the active voice to the passive voice. The game included 1 dice, 13 different coloured paper clips, two sheets of paper stuck back to back and cut into separate sentences and a board to play the game on. The team with the most of the other teams paper clips at the end of the game wins. Everybody enjoyed playing this game very much.

Y6 ‘The Highwayman’ poetry

Year 6 have been working really hard this half term looking at the Alfred Noyes poem ‘The Highwayman’. They have really enjoyed studying the language he used and how it was a twisted narrative love poem. Through role play they have been able to discuss interactions that might happen at the end of the poem between Bess and The Highwayman. Lots of children thought that Bess would be furious that she gave her life away just so he could go and end up dying!

Year 6 Respectful Relationships

Year 6 really had some really thoughtful discussions in their learning about respectful relationships this afternoon. There were thought provoking discussions that helped them learn a lot about how to show respect and what good relationships look like. Also how relationships evolve overtime.

Year 6 D&T

This week, year 6 have been working on D&T (design and technology). For this term, we have made and evaluated some chocolate truffles ( which everyone enjoyed). We were able to create truffles all on our own following our design specification. We were able to use the chocolate of our choice for the base, which we then added unsalted butter, sponge cake and icing sugar to. Everyone loved their different and unique chocolate truffles. We packaged these in our own designed box that we designed using our computing skills on a 3d net. These looked superb!

Y6 Chocolatiers

Year 6 are really enjoying investigating the history of chocolate this morning. They now can recall how a chocolate bar is made and know the process both is lengthy and hard work. Some year 6 children have excellent taste buds and are able to classify dairy and non dairy chocolate. From looking at a range of packaging they can find common ingredients and discussed what they might be used for within the chocolate (taste, texture). They can’t wait to do the taste session later!

Internet Safety – Safe and unsafe behaviours

Today in year 6 we have been discussing what behaviours online are safe and unsafe in order to protect ourselves. We discussed how we need to pick appropriate passwords and nicknames online when we are creating accounts. Through our discussions we agreed that if you changed your password regularly then it would be less likely to be hacked into. The children understood that passwords shouldn’t be linked to any personal information as this is personal for a reason and is unsafe to share addresses, schools, date of births etc with people that they don’t know.

Year 6 Computing

Recently in year 6, we have been focusing on using functions and input. We found out how we can use them. We have also been finding out how to use different variables and how much fun they can all create. A variable is a string of a certain combination or the combination can be random.  A function is something that tells the computer to do a certain thing. Input is something that you can tell the computer to do and it might reply depending on if it understands what you are saying and you have got the rest of the code right. Using this information we were able to create a Adventure text program.
